1 Texas Tech Red Raiders 2011 MLB Draft Notes Updated: August 16, 2011 TEXAS TECH HAS PRODUCED 123 MLB DRAFT/FREE AGENT SELECTIONS The Texas Tech baseball program began in 1926 and played baseball until 1929 before starting back up in 1954 where it has since played baseball in 58 consecutive seasons. Since 1962, there have been 123 Major League Baseball Draft or free agent selections. There have been 105 draft picks and 18 free agent selections. There have been 42 draft picks/free agents over the last eight seasons, an average of at least five players drafted per season. BREAKDOWN OF RED RAIDER DRAFT PICKS Texas Tech has had 105 draft picks since Overall, there has been at least one Red Raider drafted in 34 MLB Drafts, with 23 drafts containing at least two Texas Tech players. The 2011 MLB Draft saw four Red Raiders drafted and one sign as a free agent, which matches the programs most since having seven draft picks in It is the second straight year Tech has had five drafted/signed. Six times in the last eight years there have been at least five Texas Tech players drafted/sign as free agents. TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH DAN SPENCER - MENTORED 64 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT PICKS SINCE 1997 Dan Spencer has had numerous success stories in his college baseball coaching career. Among them is coaching 64 players in his time at Oregon State ( ) and Texas Tech (2008-Present) that have been selected/signed free agent in the MLB Draft. He coached 45 players at Oregon State and 19 players at Texas Tech that have been drafted or who have signed free agent. Overall Spencer has coached three first-round picks, 14 players who have gone in the top five rounds and 26 players who have been drafted in the top 10 rounds. In only four years at Tech, Spencer has worked with 12 pitchers that have been drafted/signed free agent - including four top-10 round selections. Spencer has coached eight players (7 at Oregon State) that have since made their MLB debuts. TECH IN ELITE COMPANY AMONG BIG 12 PROGRAMS Since the first Big 12 baseball season in 1997, Texas Tech is one of only three programs in the conference to have at least one player drafted in the top 14 rounds of the draft every season. The Red Raiders join Oklahoma State and Texas A&M as the only programs that have had a top-14 round pick every year since HIGHEST DRAFTED RED RAIDER - DONALD HARRIS (1ST ROUND, 5TH OVERALL ) Former Red Raider and Texas Rangers outfielder Donald Harris is the highest drafted Texas Tech player as Harris was selected fifth overall in the 1989 MLB Draft by Texas. Harris is the only first-rounder in Texas Tech history while 18 Red Raiders have gone in the top five rounds. Seven Tech players have been selected in the top 100 overall picks, including 2010 second-round draft pick Chad Bettis (Colorado Rockies - 2nd round, No. 76 overall). Only the Minnesota Twins and the newly-founded Arizona Diamondbacks (1998) have not selected or signed a Texas Tech player. Overall, 64 players have gone to National League teams with 59 players drafted/signed by American League clubs. The National League Central (28) is the division that has drafted/signed the most Red Raiders while the hometown Texas Rangers (9) and Kansas City Royals (9) are the organization that have taken the most Tech players. Although neither organization has drafted a Red Raider since 2007 (SS Kyle Martin, 29th round - Kansas City) and the Rangers have drafted only one Tech player (OF Michael Mask, 32nd round ) during the last 19 years. Both clubs have signed Red Raiders to free agent contracts since The Houston Astros have taken eight Tech players while the Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres have drafted/signed seven Texas Tech players. The only organization that has drafted a Tech player that doesn t currently exist is the Houston Colt.45 s, as they signed the first-ever Red Raider when Chuck Harrison signed with the soon-to-be Houston Astros in The Colt.45 s were established in 1962 and then became the Astros three years later. 2 TEXAS TECH PLAYERS DRAFTED/SIGNED BY POSITION A total of 42 percent of the Red Raiders drafted have been pitchers with 37 right-handed pitchers drafted/signed and 15 left-handers going to an MLB organization. Tech has seen 14 of its catchers drafted/signed while 35 infielders and 22 outfielders have also been taken in the draft. Dating back to the first three players taken in the 2006 draft, 17 of Tech s last 27 draft picks/free agent signings have been pitchers (7 LHP). TEXAS TECH WITH 22 FORMER PLAYERS IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Texas Tech has 22 former players that have made their Major League debuts, starting with first baseman Chuck Harrison in 1965 with the Houston Astros to righthanded pitcher Zach Stewart who made his big league debut with the Toronto Blue Jays on June 16, Fifteen of Tech s big leaguers have made their debuts since 2000, including five Red Raiders who played for Tech during the past decade (Jeff Karstens , Dallas Braden , Dustin Richardson , Josh Tomlin , Zach Stewart ). DALLAS BRADEN THROWS 19TH PERFECT GAME IN MLB HISTORY IN 2010 Perhaps Texas Tech s most well-known baseball alum, Dallas Braden, tossed the 19th perfect game in Major League Baseball history on May 9, 2010, against the Tampa Bay Rays. It marked only the eighth perfect game all-time thrown by a pitcher who played collegiate baseball and he became the first-ever Big 12 pitcher to enter the MLB record books with a perfect game. 4 Dan Spencer Era MLB Draft/Free Agent Picks (2008-Present) Head coach Dan Spencer came to the Texas Tech program in 2008, and since Spencer and the Texas Tech coaches have helped produce 19 players who have been drafted/signed free agent by Major League Baseball organizations. Overall, the Red Raiders program has had 12 pitchers (8 RHP, 4 LHP), two outfielders, one catcher and four infielder drafted during the last four years. Spencer has coached five players who have been top-10 round draft picks, including three in 2008 and 2010 second-round selection (76th overall) Chad Bettis and fourthround pick Bobby Doran (123rd overall). In addition, Spencer coached 45 players at Oregon State ( ) that were drafted, including 21 top-10 round picks, 10 top-five round selections and three first-round picks. In Spencer s final season with the Beavers in 2007, Oregon State had two first-round picks and a total of six top-10 selections. Seven of Spencer s players at Oregon State have made their big league debuts and one of Spencer s pitchers at Texas Tech (Zach Stewart) has made it to the big leagues.
