The tournament features hgh school varsty programs from Staten Island and throughout NYC who come to compete n the annual event and pay trbute to the memory of Johnny Ray. They weren t lyng. Httng a baseball s no easy task, and t gets harder and harder the older you get. By the tme you reach hgh school, you re facng ptchers who not only throw hard but have mastered a number of dfferent ptches. Learnng and mantanng the proper fundamentals of httng s not easy, but t s the only way to become a consstent htter. Your swng s somethng that needs to be worked on constantly so that t becomes muscle memory. After all, when the ball s on the way to the plate, you don t have tme to thnk. You only have tme to react. Here are fundamentals that wll help you refne your swng and become a more consstent, and dangerous, htter. Your feet, your hands and your head are keys to httng success. If you can move them properly and n concert, you ll put yourself n great poston to rack up hts. FEET - The feet are the foundaton for mantanng balance throughout the swng. Balance from the begnnng through the fnsh of the swng s crucal for your ablty to track the ball accurately. The stance should be comfortable. You should stand approxmately a bat plus an arm s length away from the opposte sde of the plate. To ensure you re n the rght poston, stand n the box and reach the bat to see f you can touch the opposte sde of the plate. If you can, you ll be n a poston that provdes complete plate coverage. The LOAD s when the htter shfts all of hs weght to hs back foot whle hs entre body moves together. The load stops when the back knee and back shoulder are n lne. The load should happen n a slow and controlled manner before the swng s ntated.

The front foot strdes n lne wth the back foot toward the ptcher. After a nce load and a soft strde, you should be n a balanced poston and can begn to move your hands to the ball. Ht the ball where ts ptched. If the ball s on the outsde part of the plate, you should try to take t to the opposte feld. If ts on the nsde part of the plate, you should try to pull the ball. HANDS - When movng your hands toward the ball, don t mmedately extend your arms or push your hands forward. Keepng your hands back at the start of your swng wll allow you to generate a lot of energy wth your legs and core before brngng your hands through. As you make contact, your eyes should see the bat ht the ball. You should ht through the baseball, meanng your bat speed should be at ts peak just before contact. Ths s a huge step n havng a better httng technque and drvng the ball. HEAD - Your head should be stll throughout the swng. An easy mental note to enforce keepng your head stll s to thnk Ike to Mke. You should say hello to Ike (front shoulder) at the begnnng of your swng and say hello to Mke (back shoulder) after you ht the ball. In other words, your chn should go from shoulder to shoulder whle you swng the bat. You re not actually movng your chn, but your swng s rotatng your shoulders. If you can control your head throughout the swng, httng becomes easer. Buldng muscle memory for a fundamentally sound swng takes a ton of practce.
