1 Boston wins 1912 World Series Red Sox come from behind to win in six Five of six games decided by one run World Series MV P Joe Wood Edged Christy Mathewson 2-1 in Game 4; recorded final out in Game 6, leaving Giants with bases loaded.

2 2 Red Sox come from behind to beat New York in six games in 1912 World Series Giants win first two games, but Red Sox win four in a row to capture Series Boston, capitalizing on a whatever meager opportunities afforded them by the New York Giants, rebounded from a two-game deficit, to capture the 1912 replay World Series four games to two. Similar to 1911, when the Giants looked like they were going to run away with the Series against the Philadelphia A s, New York won the first two games. After shifting to Fenway Park, however, The Red Sox terrific battle between Hugh Bedient and Rube Marquard in the final game of the series. Art Fletcher and Fred Snodgrass both hit RBI singles, but Red Murray squeezed home Fred Merkle to give the Giants the winning run in the eighth, defeating Red Sox ace Joe Wood. Giants southpaw Rube Marquard held Boston to only five hits in the second game, winning 4-1 as Larry Doyle homered and Red Murray and Chief Meyers both had RBI singles. Boston s Hugh Bedient, who was 23-2 in the regular season, was shelled for 10 hits, including a triple by Murray and a double by Chief Meyers. Moving to Fenway Park for Game Three, Boston won a 4-3, 10-inning thriller, with Ray Collins going the distance and Larry Gardner singling in the winning run in the bottom of the tenth. Boston tied the Series in Game Four behind Joe Wood, who avenged his loss in the opener with a 2-1 win over Mathewson in a classic pitching duel Both Boston runs resulted from an error by Art Fletcher in the six while New York s only score came in the fifth when Beals Becker squeezed Chief Meyers home. Mathewson lost, despite giving up only two hits. Wood won, giving up only a single to Buck Herzog. The Giants squandered numerous scoring opportunities in Game Five, dropping a 3-2 decision to Boston and putting the Red Sox only a game away from the championship. The Giants left nine men on base while the Red Sox scored twice in the 7 th and took the lead on Tris Speaker RBI triple to come away with a come-from-behind 3-2 win. The Red Sox captured the Series in Game Six, winning 1-0, in another great pitching duel, as Bedient, hit hard in Game Two, blanked the Giants for 8.2 innings before giving way to Joe Wood in the top of the ninth, who retired the Giants Doc Crandall, with the bases loaded, to end the Series. The only run in the game, off hard-luck loser Rube Marquard, came in the sixth, when Duffy Lewis doubled home Steve Yerkes with what turned out to be the run of the game. Boston only hit.164 in the Series, but their pitching over the final four games, combined with their ability to deliver key hits at just the right moment, proved to be the difference. Only five of Boston s 27 hits in the Series went for extra bases.

3 3 New York did not beat the cover off the ball, hitting only.232, but could not get to Boston s pitching when it mattered, leaving too many men on base. The Giants lost numerous opportunities in the final four games, leaving nine men on base in Game Three, 10 batters stranded in Game Five and nine left on base in Game Six. Boston s Joe Wood, 1-1 in the Series, with a 2.08 ERA, was named the Series MVP. Wood lost the opener 3-2 to Christy Mathewson, giving up three runs, striking out nine and only walking one. He threw a one-hitter at the Giants in Game Four, allowing only one run and striking out 10. Finally, Wood saved the game that clinched the Series for Boston, nailing Doc Crandall, with the bases loaded, for the final out of the Series. Series notes Boston only had four extra base hits among their total of 27 his in the Series. The Giants had 40 hits in the six games, with seven extra base hits, including a home run by 2b Larry Doyle, off Hugh Bedient, in Game Two. Boston s Joe Wood threw a onehitter at New York in Game Four to beat Christy Mathewson 2-1 and saved Game Six, retiring Doc Crandall in the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded. Wood was the Series MVP. The Giants stole six bases in the Series, but New York base stealers were caught seven times. In Game Three, Boston backup C Hick Cady threw out Fred Snodgrass twice and Fred Merkle once. The quality of the pitching in the Series put a premium on small ball. The Red Sox went to the sacrifice bunt seven times. New York sacrificed eight times, two of them that squeezed home runs. New York s Larry Doyle led all hitters, going 7-24,.292. Doyle also led all batters with six strikeouts. Giant RF Red Murray hit.286 (6-21) and leadoff man LF Fred Snodgrass hit.280 (7-25) in the Series. Boston 1b Jake Stahl led the Red Sox going 4-16,.250. Christy Mathewson, who did not walk a single batter in 20 innings of work in the 1911 replay Series again showed pinpoint control, walking only one batter in 17 innings. Boston C Bill Carrigan had to work had to coax the BB off Mathewson with back-to-back 14s against Mathewson, rated a ZZ for control. In the two combined Series, Mathewson walked only one batter in 37 innings of work. Boston s Larry Gardner had to sit out Game Five with an injury. Gardner collided with C Bill Carrigan in Game Four in the first inning, knocking him out of the remainder of the game plus the next game. Clyde Engle filled in for Gardner. Giant reliever Doc Crandall had a Series he would like to forget. Crandall gave up four hits and the winning run to lose Game Three by a 4-3 score. At the plate, Crandall, regarded as a solid hitter, went 0-2 as a pinch hitter. In Game Six, with the bases loaded, Crandall grounded out to 1b Jake Stahl for the final out in the Series.

6 6 World Series Game 1 New York 3, Boston 2 Giants score in bottom of eighth to beat Joe Wood in tight Series opener In a matchup of 30-game winners, the New York Giants won the 1912 replay World Series opener 3-2 behind the six-hit pitching of Christy Mathewson, who only allowed six singles and a pair of unearned runs to win a close 3-2 decision over Boston ace Joe Wood. The Giants Art Fletcher scored on an RBI single by Fred Snodgrass in the third to give the Giants an early 1-0 lead against Wood. In the fourth, the Giants scored again with Fletcher singling home Chief Meyers to put New York ahead 2-0. Mathewson, meanwhile, was perfect through the first six innings, retiring the first 18 Red Sox in a row. In the top of the seventh, however, Boston managed to tie the game. Harry Hooper led off with a single to break up Mathewson s perfect game and, two batters later, Tris Speaker singled. With two out, Boston 3b Larry Gardner grounded to Giants 2b Larry Doyle, who misplayed the grounder, allowing both Hooper and Speaker to score and tie the game at 2-2. In the bottom of the eighth, Fred Merkle singled with one out and advanced to third on a single by Larry Doyle. Red Murray then squeezed Merkle home to put the Giants ahead 3-2. The Red Sox Duffy Lewis and Jake Stahl bot singled in the top of the ninth, but Mathewson retired pinch-hitter Hugh Bradley to end the game and put New York ahead 1-0 in the Series. Christy Mathewson limited the Red Sox to just five singles, all during the final three innings, but did not walk anyone. The Giants were able to utilize small ball to get to Wood, with each of their three runs built around a single, a sacrifice and a run-scoring single. 7 7 World Series Game 2 New York 4, Boston 1 Rube Marquard shuts down Red Sox for second straight game; Giants take 2-0 lead in Series New York southpaw Rube Marquard held Boston to five hits and a single run while Larry Doyle homered and Red Murray and Chief Meyers both singled in runs to lift the Giants to a 4-1 win and a 2-0 lead in the Series. Doyle immediately put the Giants ahead of Boston s Hugh Bedient in the first inning, homering off Bedient to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Boston tied the game in the third when Harry Hooper singled and scored on a wild pitch by Marquard after advancing to third on a single by Steve Yerkes. Marquard then put the Giants back in front 2-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of third and the Giants added two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Red Murray and Chief Meyers to make it 4-1 in favor of New York. Marquard only allowed one hit, a single by Jack Stahl, in the final five innings while New York continued to threaten, but were not able to score any additional runs off Bedient, who was off form from his 23-2 record in the regular season, allowing a total of 10 hits. Marquard finished with 10. Red Murray had three hits for New York, including a double, triple and an RBI single. 8 8 World Series Game 3 Boston 4, New York 3 (10 innings) Larry Gardner singles home winning run to win back-and-forth extra inning classic Boston 3b Larry Gardner squeezed home the tying run in the 8 th inning and singled home the winning run in the tenth as Boston, happy to be playing in front of their home crowd at Fenway Park, topped New York 4-3 to cut the Giants lead in the World Series to 2-1. New York started out like they were going to run Red Sox lefty Ray Collins out of the game, with Fred Snodgrass opening the game with a triple and immediately scoring on an RBI single by Fred Merkle, who was thrown out tying to steal The Giants only could managed three more hits of Collins for the remainder of the game The Red Sox took a 2-1 lead in the third on a sac fly by Duffy Lewis, but NY tied it in the fourth when Buck Herzog drove in Larry Doyle, who had singled and stolen second. Boston again took the lead in the eighth when Gardner squeezed home Steve Yerkes, who had walked. New York, despite their difficulties with Collins, countered in the top of the ninth when Collins walked Chief Meyers. Two batters later, with George Burns, pinch-hitting, Josh Devore, running for Meyers, scored on Burns fly to center to tie the game at three. In the bottom of the 10 th, with Doc Crandall on in relief of Giants starter Jeff Tesreau, Harry Hooper led off with a single, but was erased when Steve Yerkes grounded into a double play. With two out, Tris Speaker and Duffy Lewis both singled and Gardner followed with a third straight single to score Speaker and win the game for Boston. 9 9 World Series Game 4 Boston 2, New York 1 Red Sox tie Series at two games apiece as Joe Wood throws one-hitter to edge Mathewson in classic pitching duel In a classic pitching duel, Boston s Joe Wood rebounded from his loss in Game One to edge Christy Mathewson 2-1 in a game in which both teams combined for only three hits. New York scored their only run in the top of the fifth when Chief Meyers walked, advanced to third on a hit-and-run by Buck Herzog, and was squeezed home by Beals Becker. With Mathewson started out pitching as well as he did in Game One, retiring the first thirteen Boston batters in a row before Larry Gardner got aboard via an error by Giants 3b Buck Herzog in the fifth. Leading off the sixth, Bill Carrigan worked Mathewson for a base on balls and moved to second on a single by Wood, Boston s first hit of the game. After Harry Hooper advanced the runners with a sacrifice, Steve Yerkes hit a grounder to Giants Art Fletcher. The Giant SS booted the ground ball, scoring Carrigan and Wood to give Boston a 2-1 lead. Both of Boston s runs were unearned. Wood did not allow the Giants a hit over the final four innings, but issued a leadoff walk to Larry Doyle in the seventh, but Doyle was stranded after reaching second on a sacrifice. Mathewson, meanwhile, only permitted only one more hit, a single by Jake Stahl in the seventh. Wood finished with a one-hit win and Mathewson ended with a two-hit loss. The Red Sox lost Larry Gardner for the game, plus one additional game, when Gardner was injured in the first inning when he collided with C Bill Carrigan while chasing a foul fly. Boston s 2-1 triumph evened the Series at two games apiece. 10 10 World Series Game 5 Boston 3, New York 2 Boston wins third in a row at Fenway; score three runs in late inning for come-from-behind victory New York s Leon Ames only allowed two hits, but one of them was a key two-run double by pinch-hitter Hugh Bradley, tying the game in the 8 th inning and leading to an unlikely come-from-behind win for Boston to put the Red Sox ahead three games to two in the Series. Boston made the most of what little they were offered while the Giants struggled to get a game-breaking hit, leaving 10 runners on base. New York took a 2-0 lead against Boston starter Buck O Brien when Chief Meyers singled in Red Murray in the third and Ames, who had doubled, scored on an error by Boston C Bill Carrigan in the fourth. Boston, meanwhile, was once again slow to get their offense going and, other than a couple of walks, could not touch Ames until the fifth, when SS Heinie Wagner doubled for the first Red Sox base hit, only to be left stranded. In the seventh, with one out, Red Sox 3b Clyde Engle, playing for the injured Larry Gardner, walked and moved to second when Ames hit Jake Stahl with a pitch. After Engle and Stahl moved up with a sacrifice, pinch-hitter Hugh Bradley doubled off Ames to score both runners and tie the game at 2-2. After Ames was been lifted for a pinch-hitter in the eighth, Jeff Tesreau came on in relief for the Giants. Boston 2b Steve Yerkes singled to lead off against Tesreau and Tris Speaker followed with a long triple to Score Yerkes, with Speaker thrown out at home by Red Murray, with a relay from Larry Doyle, trying to stretch the three-bagger into an inside-thepark home run. Speaker s triple gave Boston a 3-2 lead. Charlie Hall, who relieved in the top of the eighth after O Brien departed for a pinch-hitter, retired the Giants in order in the top of the ninth to preserve the Boston lead and give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead in the Series. 11 11 World Series Game 6 Boston 1, New York 0 Red Sox Hugh Bedient, Joe Wood blank Giants; Sox win final four games in a row to capture 1912 World Series The stalwart pitching of Boston and a timely RBI double by Duffy Lewis lifted the Red Sox their fourth win in a row to beat New York s Rube Marquard 1-0 and win the 1912 replay World Series. The Giants had plenty of opportunities to score, generating eight hits off Boston starter Hugh Bedient, but could not generate any key hits, leaving nine men on base. Boston, meanwhile, could only garner six hits off Marquard, who won Game Two, but they scored the game s only run in the sixth when Duffy Lewis doubled home Steve Yerkes, who had singled. Lewis RBI double was the only extra base hit by either side. The game s most dramatic moment came in the top of the ninth when, with two out, Bedient gave up back-to-back singles to Buck Herzog and Beals Becker and then hit Art Fletcher with a pitch to load the bases. The Red Sox brought on Joe Wood, with two days rest, and Wood retired Doc Crandall, who had come on in relief for Marquard, for the final out, earning a save and preserving Boston s narrow 1-0 lead for a World Series victory. Boston got six hits off Marquard, five singles and Lewis game-winning double, and left nine men on base.
