1 Thanks for umping in the 2019 Bronco A and B leagues for the! Here s some important information: Scheduling Attendance Scheduling will be done on a week-by-week basis: An will be sent by umps@wilmettebaseball.org asking you to provide your availability for the following week After the responses are submitted, an will be sent with the game assignments for that week Once assigned, you will receive reminders for the games you are scheduled to ump. Log into with the address & password you received when your umpire account was created. You can view the games you are assigned to ump by clicking on Officials Management, then Assignments. Your schedule for the following week should appear a few hours after the game assignment has been sent. If you have any issues, please send an to umps@wilmettebaseball.org You are responsible for your games. If you cannot make a game, you are responsible for finding a replacement. Ask other Bronco umpires you know or use broncoumps@wilmettebaseball.org to mass all the Bronco umpires. As soon as you find a replacement, send an to umps@wilmettebaseball.org and to the replacement umpire with the following information: Your name, The date, time, and location of the game you were assigned to ump, and The name of your replacement. Game Locations Number of Umps Game Cancellations Games will be played at: Elam field closest to Wilmette Junior High School Pomona field closest to Highcrest Middle School, at the end of Pomona Lane Roemer Park off of Old Glenview Rd, east of Skokie Blvd We intend to schedule three umps at each game. Please do not rotate positions during the game. You will receive an if a game gets cancelled more than 24 hours before game time. For situations involving inclement weather during the day, please go to the end of this handout. 1

2 Payment Bronco A & B -- $27 per game There will be two checks: Payment for games worked between April 1 and May 10 will be mailed at the end of May. Payment for games worked between May 11 and June 15 will be mailed at the end of June. Disputed Calls Judgment Calls. Examples Out v. safe; fair v. foul; ball v. strike. Your response to any challenge is, That s the way I saw it and that s my call. Play ball. Once you make the call, stick with it and resume playing the game. Be decisive. If a manager argues with you over a judgment call, tell him that the call has been made and the game is moving on. Rule Interpretations. Example Ball hit to shortstop, who overthrows the first baseman. Ball goes out of play. You award the batter third base. Manager of fielding team objects, contending that under the rules the batter is entitled only to second base. You should consult the rules and your fellow umpires and, in this example, change the call. Recurring Umping Issues Call a consistent strike zone However you see the strike zone, stick with it. Even if it s not perfect, it s fair as long as both teams play with the same strike zone. BE LOUD The players and coaches must hear your calls. It also shows you have confidence in your calls. Dress appropriately and get to the game early wear dark, solid colors. Shorts are OK. Do not wear pants that do not fit you appropriately (too tight or too baggy) or that have holes in them. Arrive to the game 15 minutes before start time. Leave your cell phone alone Do not have your cell phone out at any point during the game. Do not eat during the game this is especially true for games at Roemer. Visit the concession stand after the game, NOT during it. KNOW THE RULES! frequently review the league rules posted on the website Communications Check your at least twice every day. Attendance Pre Game Meetings All umpires should meet at home plate with the team managers just before the game. Give each manager your first and last name. 3 The weather is bad. I m not sure if my game will be played. What do I do? When the coaches decide to cancel a game, they send a text message to a phone number that automatically sends an to all the umpires with the information. Follow and/or check the Wilmette Umps Twitter page. Cancellation updates will also be posted there (@WilmetteUmps) If you have not received an and the game is not listed as cancelled on the Twitter account, the game has not been canceled. Please go to your game. If you show up to the field and there are no teams present, please umps@wilmettebaseball.org about the situation NOTE: We are testing a system that can also send text messages to the cell phone number you provided during registration. We are not sure if this will work yet so please rely on your and the Twitter account for rainout info. 3

4 POSITIONS THREE UMPIRE CREW No Runners On OR Runner On 3 rd Base Only 3 rd base umpire is in charge of second base if there s a play at second on single/double, needs to move towards 2 nd base when ball is hit Runner(s) on 1 st, 1 st and 2 nd, Bases Loaded, or 1 st and 3 rd 3 rd base umpire stands on the infield grass, between pitcher and second base 3 rd base umpire responsible for calls at both second and third base 4

5 POSITIONS TWO UMPIRE CREW No Runners On Base Field umpire is responsible for calls at 2 nd base or 3 rd base if the batter tries for a double or triple field umpire needs to follow the batter Any runners on any bases Field umpire stands on the infield grass between the mound and 1 st base Field umpire is responsible for calls at 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd bases 5

6 BRONCO BASEBALL UMPIRE QUICK GUIDE Pre-Game Meeting (for both leagues) Give both coaches your first and last name make sure they write it down There can only be one on-deck batter and the on-deck batter cannot be on the field. Must remain behind the fence All batters must wear helmets with facemasks One balk warning per pitcher No suicide squeezes and no fake bunting and then swinging away. Both automatic outs All baserunners must make an effort to avoid contact with fielders. Baserunners that purposely make contact with fielders will be called out No head first slides allowed, except when going back to the base on a pick-off. Runner will be called out if they head-first slide If there are two outs and the catcher for the next inning is on base, the last batted out should pinch run for the catcher so the catcher can start putting the gear on Discuss any ground rules (for example, at Elam, if there s a soccer game in the outfield, what happens if a batted ball rolls out there, etc) Ask the coaches if they have any questions Bronco A Rules to Remember Has lead-offs, balks, and dropped third strike games are 7 innings long Mercy rule is 10 runs after 5 innings Bronco B Rules to Remember Has lead-offs, balks, and dropped third strike games are 7 innings long Mercy rule is 12 runs after 4 innings For the first four innings, teams may only score 7 runs per inning max. There is no run limit after the 4 th inning. 6
