Royals vs. Twins Kansas City s struggles with the Twins in 2017 have been a script flipper from a year ago, as the Royals are just 1-7 this year after going 15-4 a season ago...kc trails the all-time series by a count, but possesses a record in Kansas City, specifically here in Kauffman Stadium. ROSTER MOVES--The Royals today optioned right-handed pitcher Jake Junis to Omaha (AAA) and have recalled left-handed hurler Eric Skoglund...this will be Skoglund s second stint with the big league club, as he was 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA in three earlier starts...he will wear #53. FOUR SCORE AND 14 WINS AGO--Kansas City didn t get to four runs yesterday, thus their June streak stayed intact as the Royals are a perfect 14-0 when scoring at least four runs...if this sounds all too familiar for a mid-season roll, one only has go to as far back as the 2015 World Series title year when from May 9-June 28, the Royals reeled off 19 consecutive wins when plating at least four runs, then after losing a July 1 contest in Houston (6-5), KC won eight more in a row for a 27-1 stretch when plating at least four...this current streak began with a 4-0 win on June 2 vs. Cleveland. A RARE MATCHUP--Thanks to the mind of Dave Holtzman and research of STATS, Inc., it s been uncovered that tonight s pitching matchup of Ervin Santana and Jason Vargas is just the second time since 1990 that two hurlers with at least 10 wins and ERA s under 3.00 have squared off prior to the All-Star break...the last such get together was June 16, 2002, when Boston s Derek Lowe (10 wins, 1.89 ERA) met up with Atlanta s Tom Glavine (11 wins, 1.53 ERA) in an interleague game at Turner Field... prior to that it was 27 years to the date, June 30, 1990, when Oakland s Bob Welch (12 wins, 2.53 ERA) squared off in Skydome against Dave Stieb (10 wins, 2.85 ERA). HOME WORK--The Royals return to The K where they possess an overall ledger this year, including a 6-3 in their last nine...kc has won its last two series here, going 2-1 against both Boston and Toronto last week...this 4-game series with the Twins are the only home contests in a stretch of 13 games starting with the 1-2 stop in Detroit and then a 6-game tour of Seattle (3) and Dodger Stadium (3) prior to the break...the Royals will come out of the break with a 10-game homestand featuring visits from Texas (3), Detroit (4) and the White Sox (3)...once that post-break stand is completed, Kansas City will be on the road for 17 of 23 games from July 24-August 16. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch.
