Ask students who the individual is. Do any of them play sports? What sport(s) do they play? If they do not play a sport, perhaps they know someone who plays a sport. Lesson 1 TEACHER INSTRUCTING AND MODELING: Go over the sports and describe them. 2 GUIDED PRACTICE: Have a student come to the front and whisper to you the name of a sport. The student then gives a clue to the class and the class guesses the sport. The student continues to give clues until someone guesses the sport. (Students could be divided into teams and given points. If they are able to guess the sport on the first clue, they get five points, second clue 4 points, etc.). INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE: In pairs or teams, have students select a sport and write 5 clues describing the sport. The pairs or teams then ask the class to guess what sport they are describing. T: I am, thanks a lot. C: You deserved to win. T: Thanks. (Thank you very much, It was nothing) I did work hard. Coach and team are sad as they lost the game. C: Cheer up. You tried hard. T: I'm okay, thanks. Just disappointed. C: Don't look so sad. You can try again. T: I know, but I feel terrible. C: Come on, chin up! You did your best. T: But my best wasn't good enough. C: I'm so sorry you lost. T: Thanks. I feel bad too. C: Tough luck. T: Yeah, I was just unlucky. C: Better luck next time. T: Thanks. I appreciate it. GUIDED PRACTICE: Choose students to come to the front and play the different parts of the dialog. Give them the written out dialogue. They may use different responses if able (see Additional Activities for other responses which could be put into the dialogue). INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Divide students into groups and have them write a story about sometime that they played on a team or played a sport and what happened. Each team has maze walker, a person who can only say, turn right, one who says, turn left, and one who says, go straight. At first, one team at a time, blindfold the walker and see if they can direct him through. Then do all teams at once.
