NO REFUNDS on jerseys, for forfeits or any other reason. It is solely the responsibility of the participants to find out when they are scheduled to compete. Schedules for this tournament will be posted on Monday afternoons by 2:00 p.m. on the Intramural Sports bulletin board in Park Center, located just outside the Woods Fitness Facility and online at The first schedule will be posted on Monday, September 9 th. Play will begin on Saturday, September 14 th.
3 FORFEIT POLICY: Due to facility and time limitations, teams who forfeit once will be immediately eliminated from the competition without the opportunity to pay the forfeit fee. Additionally, please note that game time is forfeit time. However, in an effort to reduce the number of forfeited competitions and to accommodate the busy schedules of our students, the Recreational Sports Department will be implementing the following policy for this tournament: If the minimum number of participants are not present and ready to participate at the time of their scheduled competition, the game clock will be started and the late team will be given a 3-minute grace period to arrive. Of course, all team members must then check in with the scorekeeper and the captains meeting must be held before play can begin. The game clock shall not stop during this process and extra time shall not be added to the game clock to make up for lost time. Additionally, one run will be awarded to the opposing team for each minute that a team is late. If the minimum number of participants has still not arrived by the end of the 3-minute grace period, the contest shall be declared a forfeit. The Recreational Sports Department respectfully asks that teams do not take advantage of this grace period and instead arrive at least 5 minutes before the scheduled time of competition. SPORTSMANSHIP RATING SYSTEM: At the conclusion of each contest, the officials and scorekeeper will assign a score to each team based on the behavior, actions, and attitudes exhibited during the course of play. In all cases, Intramural Sports Supervisors and the Intramural Sports staff may provide input which could raise or lower an assigned rating. Captains must acknowledge their team s rating by signing the score sheet before exiting the contest venue. Teams may also view their sportsmanship ratings in the Intramural Sports Office during regular business hours. Behavior before, during, and after an intramural contest will be factored into each team s rating. It is the responsibility of the team captain to inform his/her teammates and spectators about the rating system. Ratings will be given in whole numbers on a scale of 0-4. Teams must maintain a minimum 2.5 rating in order to advance and continue playing in this tournament. For full details about the Sportsmanship Rating System, please visit the Intramural Sports page on the Recreational Sports Department website.
4 SUNY CORTLAND RECREATIONAL SPORTS DEPARTMENT SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL RULES THE GAME: Each game is scheduled for 7 innings. A new inning may not begin after 50 minutes has elapsed from the time the game started. Four full innings, or 3 1/2 innings if the home team is ahead, constitutes an official game if the game is called due to weather or darkness. CALLED GAME: The decision to end a game will be made by the field supervisor after conferring with the umpire(s). If the game is official and the score is tied, a tie will be recorded. If the game is unofficial it will not be recorded as a game played. BATTING ORDER: Fewer than 7 players ready to play at the scheduled game time constitutes a forfeit. A batting order can consist of no greater than 12 players (6 men and 6 women), but 14 players (7 men and 7 women) may actually bat. In situations where 7 official male or female roster members are present, teams may elect to have two players of the same gender occupy the same position in the batting order. However, the players MUST alternate at-bats each time through the lineup without any exceptions. The maximum number of players of the same gender allowed to occupy any spot in a batting order is two. FIELDING: A team in the field may consist of no more than 10 players although an official game may be played with as few as 7. In cases where more than 10 players are listed in the batting order, any 10 of those players may take the field, providing that the number of men never exceeds the number of women on the field by more than 1 (see, Special Co-Rec Modifications below). If more than 10 batters are used, batters may not be skipped over unless legitimately injured and dropped for the remainder of the game. PITCHING: 1. The pitcher shall take a position with both feet on the ground and with one or both feet in contact with, but not off to the side of, the pitching rubber. 2. The ball must be delivered toward home plate on the first forward swing of the pitching arm past the hip. 3. A pivot foot must remain in contact with the rubber until the ball is released. 4. If a step is taken in the delivery it must be forward. 5. A legally pitched ball must be between 6 and 12 from the ground at its peak. A pitch that fails to be within the 6-12 range will be declared an illegal pitch by the umpire and will be recorded as a ball UNLESS the batter chooses to swing at it. 6. There are no rules pertaining to the pitcher s hand position or spin on the ball. STRIKE ZONE: Any ball that hits the strike pad or home plate and is also within the 6 12 arc is a strike. All other pitches are balls. MERCY RULE: The game will be ended if: 1. A team is leading by 20 or more runs after three or more innings 2. A team is leading by 15 or more runs after four or more innings 3. A team is leading by 10 or more runs after five or more innings If the visiting team reaches or exceeds the mercy rule margin in the top half of the inning, the home team has an opportunity to reduce the margin below the limit in the bottom half of the inning. There is no rule that requires a half-inning to end due to a team scoring a set number of runs. PLAYER EJECTION: Any player (or spectator) ejected from the game must leave the field and surrounding area immediately. He/she is automatically suspended from the team s next game AND must meet with the Recreational Sports Assistant Director before he/she is eligible to rejoin his/her team.
5 RUNNER RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. It is the responsibility of the base runners to avoid a collision with a fielder in possession, or about to gain possession, of the ball. Failure to do so results in the base runner being called out. If judged to be an intentional collision, the runner will be ejected from the game. 2. Base runners may slide into any base. However, sliding is only allowed as an attempt to reach a base safely. Take-out slides, or any slides that, in the judgment of the official(s), are executed with the intention of preventing a fielder from completing a play and/or injuring an opponent will be ruled as a dangerous play and the base runner will be called out and possibly ejected. 3. Head first slides are not allowed. However, players may dive head first in order to get back to a base. MISCELLANEOUS RULES: 1. The batter starts with a count of one ball and one strike. After a batter has two strikes, he or she is allowed one free foul ball on the first foul ball. The second foul ball is strike three and the batter is out. 2. The home team is determined by a pre-game coin toss. 3. Only gym shoes and 1-piece, solid rubber cleats are allowed (metal spikes, screw-in cleats and bare feet are strictly forbidden). 4. Spectators and non-hitting/fielding players must remain behind a safe line designated by the umpire. 5. There is no stealing, leading, bunting or chopping down on the ball. Base runners may not leave the base until the pitched ball becomes a batted ball. 6. If an untouched batted ball strikes any permanent structure, or rolls into a road or parking lot, it is a dead ball with the batter receiving the last base safely touched. Any runners on base will be given the same number of bases as the batter. 7. On overthrows that go out of play and become dead balls, runners are awarded two bases. No matter who threw the ball, two bases are awarded from the last base touched when the ball left the fielder s hand. The direction that the runners are running has no bearing on the awarding of bases. 8. Foul tips must be hit higher than the batter s head to be caught for an out. The ball is dead after each pitch or completed play. 9. The pitcher may request that the umpire award the batter an intentional walk. A male batter who receives an intentional walk is awarded second base. 10. A courtesy runner may only run for a player who is injured during the play and is unable to run the bases safely. The courtesy runner must be the person who made the last out of the same gender as the runner to be replaced. PROTESTS: Any protest of a rule interpretation must be done before the ball becomes live. It is the team captain s responsibility to request an explanation and, if dissatisfied, that the supervisor be called in to make a final decision. All such decisions are final. THE UMPIRE S JUDGEMENT MAY NEVER BE PROTESTED. SPECIAL CO-REC MODIFICATIONS: 1. The number of men on the field or in the batting order may never exceed the number of women by more than 1 (i.e. 5 men and 4 women is ok, 6 men and 3 women is illegal). If a team so chooses, the number of women on the field or in the batting order may exceed the number of men by more than Two or more men may never bat in succession EXCEPT in the event that male players conclude and begin a lineup in which male and female batters are alternated. 3. The pitcher-catcher combination must be made up of one female player and one male player. Any rules not covered in this document shall be governed by official NIRSA slow pitch softball rules.
