3 an Introduction Welcome to the Armchair Sports Company s first of four reviews commemorating 25 seasons of the Premier League. This review provides a complete record and analysis of the outcomes relating to the 9,746 matches played between August 1992 and May Results and scores are analysed by season and in total with the information presented in a way that is easy to understand. The Contents page of the electronic version contains links to sections, season scoregrids and tables. There are many aspects of football to consider but the most important statistic is always the final match outcome. The Premier League is one of the world s most popular football competitions and every week millions of people throughout the world attempt to predict results and scores for money, as part of a predictor league or just for fun with family and friends. Predictions are usually made based on the history of a fixture, recent form, current factors (e.g. injuries & suspensions) or purely on gut instinct. Unexpected results and shock scores occur in the Premier League on a regular basis and whilst it is difficult enough to predict a match result it is impossible to predict a match score with absolute certainty. Regardless of tactics, formations or the quality of the players anything can happen during a match. Forwards miss chances, goalkeepers drop the ball and, most frustrating of all, officials get decisions wrong that directly or indirectly influence the outcome of the match. Indeed, the only certainty in football is that the score is always 0-0 when matches kick-off. Regardless of what information is available there are matches in every competition where neither side is viewed as a clear favourite and predictors are undecided on the likely match outcome. The Armchair Sports Company has developed a set of Football Predictor Dice as a new option for predicting match outcomes. Although the dice can be used for any match in any competition they are particularly relevant for those matches that are too close to call and where no outcome would be a surprise. The Football Predictor Dice consist of: an 8-sided dice for predicting results; and a 10-sided dice for predicting scores. With dice prediction ratios based on actual Premier League match outcomes, the dice offer a fun and novel, yet realistic, way of predicting a match result or score. The next page includes instructions on how to use the dice and compares the dice ratios to Premier League match outcomes from the first 25 seasons. Dice ratios are also in line with Champions League results and scores for the same period and this is demonstrated on page 5. The dice are the perfect gift for the football fan or punter and, although serious tipsters may dismiss the dice as a gimmick, we are sure that they will at least pick up the dice and use them to predict a match outcome, if only for the novelty factor. The question is though, once rolled will they be confident enough to go with or against the dice prediction? Enjoy the review and good luck predicting match results and scores. 3 Kenny The Armchair Sports Company

4 Comparison of Football Dice Ratios to Premier League Outcomes (1992/ /17) Dice ratios compare to the outcomes of the 9,746 matches played in the first 25 Premier League seasons as follows: 8-Sided Result Dice: Comparison of Actual Results to Dice Prediction Ratios ACTUAL RESULTS Home Wins Draws Away Wins Total Matches Number of Matches 4,502 2,577 2,667 9,746 % of Matches 46.19% 26.44% 27.37% DICE Predicted Result 1 X 2 % Prediction Chance 50% 25% 25% Instructions: Select a fixture and roll the dice to predict the match result. A home win is represented by a 1 on the dice (4 of 8 sides), a draw by an X (2 of 8 sides) and an away win by a 2 (2 of 8 sides). The Manchester derby is a good example of a fixture that is too close to call and the result dice offers an alternative way of predicting the result. The sides have met 20 times at Old Trafford in the Premier League with 10 home wins, 5 draws and 5 away wins. No result would be a surprise given the quality of the players involved and the potential dice outcomes mirror actual results with a 50% chance of predicting a home win and a 25% chance of predicting a draw or away win. 10-Sided Score Dice: Comparison of Actual Goals Scored to Dice Prediction Ratios ACTUAL GOALS SCORED Total Teams No. of Home Teams 2,271 3,155 2,375 1, ,746 % of Home Teams 23% 32% 24% 12% 5% 2% 1% 0% 0% 0% No. of Away Teams 3,372 3,418 1, ,746 % of Away Teams 35% 35% 19% 8% 3% 1% 0% 0% 0% 0% All Teams 5,643 6,573 4,205 1, ,492 % of All Teams 29% 34% 22% 10% 4% 1% 0% 0% 0% 0% DICE Predicted Goals % Prediction Chance (a) 30% 30% 30% 10% (b) 30% 30% 30% 3% 3% 3% 0.3% 0.3% 0.3% 0.1% Instructions: 1. Select a fixture and roll the dice to predict the number of goals for each side. The dice has 10 sides representing the predicted number of goals, as follows: 0 (3 sides); 1 (3 sides); 2 (3 sides) & 3 (1 side). 2. % Prediction Chance (a): This is the applicable weightings if a thrower decides a team is unlikely to score more than 3 goals. 3. % Prediction Chance (b): This is the applicable weightings if a thrower decides a team could score more than 3 goals. In this scenario, the dice is rolled again and the numbers added together to give the predicted number of goals. 4. If a thrower is unsure whether a team will score over 3 goals they could toss a coin: heads = plus 3 goals with the dice rolled again & tails = 3 goals with no need to roll the dice again. The Manchester derbies finished 0-0 & 0-1 in 2015/16 and 0-0 & 1-2 in 2016/17. Whilst it is always much more difficult to predict a score, each roll of the dice provides a 30% chance of predicting that a team will not score or that they will score 1 or 2 goals in a match. 4

5 Comparison of Football Dice Ratios to Champions League Outcomes (1992/ /17) Dice ratios compare to Champions League match outcomes from the first 25 seasons, as follows: 8-Sided Result Dice: Comparison of Actual Results to Dice Prediction Ratios ACTUAL RESULTS Home Wins Draws Away Wins Total Matches Matches % Matches % Matches % Knockout: Pre-Group % % % 1,832 Group Stage 1,104 49% % % 2,256 Knockout: Post Group % % % 501 All Matches 2, % 1, % 1, % 4,589 DICE Predicted Result 1 X 2 % Prediction Chance 50% 25% 25% Note: Actual Results relate to 4,589 completed Champions League matches where there was a designated home and away side. Instructions: Select a fixture and roll the dice to predict the match result. A home win is represented by a 1 on the dice (4 of 8 sides), a draw by an X (2 of 8 sides) and an away win by a 2 (2 of 8 sides). 10-Sided Score Dice: Comparison of Actual Goals Scored to Dice Prediction Ratios ACTUAL GOALS SCORED Total Teams All Teams 2,892 2,911 1, ,230 % of All Teams 31% 32% 20% 10% 4% 2% 1% 0% 0% 0% 0% DICE Predicted Goals % Prediction (a) 30% 30% 30% 10% Chance (b) 30% 30% 30% 3% 3% 3% 0.3% 0.3% 0.3% 0.1% 0.03% Notes: 1. The figures above relate to goals scored in normal time (90 minutes) in 4,615 completed Champions League matches. In addition to the 4,589 matches referred in the Result Dice note above, an additional 26 matches (25 finals and a play-off match) were played at neutral venues. 2. Where completed matches were subsequently forfeited, the original match score was used in the above figures and not the forfeit score. Instructions: 1. 4. If a thrower is unsure whether a team will score over 3 goals they could toss a coin: heads = plus 3 goals with dice rolled again & tails = 3 goals with no need to roll the dice again. 5
