1 Topic 3 Word Problems: Addition, Subtraction, Division, and Multiplication 1.. Should be able to add, subtract, divide, and multiple large numbers comfortably 2.. Should be to solve addition, subtraction, division and multiplication word problems Question 1 Worked Examples Tom grew 41 turnips, Joan grew 17 turnips, and Dan grew 10 turnips. They worked for 310 days on the farm. How many turnips did they grow in all? Question 2 Adam works in ASDA. He earns 8.55 per hour. He works 8 hours a day. He works every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Layla on the other earns per hour. She works 7 hours a day. She works every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Who earns more throughout the week? How much more?

2 Question 3 A salesman bought a case of 48 backpacks. He sold 17 of them for 18 on ebay, and the rest were sold to a department store for 25 each. How much money did he make?

3 Practice Question 1.. There are 18 pencils in the drawer and 33 pencils on the desk. Jessica placed 36 more pencils on the desk. How many pencils are now there in all? 2.. Nicholas earns 3 per hour. He worked a total of 37.5 hours. How much money did he make? 3.. Sara had forty-seven baseball cards. Sally gave her twenty-six new baseball cards. Sara bought thirty-seven baseball cards. How many baseball cards does Sara have now? 4.. Mike has thirty-six blue marbles, Tim has forty-two blue marbles, and Dan has thirty-seven blue marbles. The marbles cost thirty-six pounds. How many blue marbles do they have in total?

4 5 There are 48 oak trees currently in the park. Park workers will plant 46 more oak trees today and 22 more oak trees tomorrow. How many oak trees will the park have when the workers are finished? 6 Joan had 24 five pence in her bank. Her dad gave her 23 five pence and her mother gave her 37 five pence. How many Pounds does Joan have now? 7.. Alyssa went to eleven hockey games this year, but missed fourteen. She went to fifteen games last year and plans to go to ten games next year. He gave 23 of them to his friend for free. 17 of them, he sold them on Amazon for 18, and the rest were sold to a department store for 27 each. How much did the salesman make in total?

How many violet balloons does she now have? 17.. There are seventy - six erasers in the drawer. Sandy placed eleven more erasers in the drawer. How many erasers are now there in all?

His dad borrowed 74 nickels from Jason. How many nickels does he have now? 20.. There are eighty - seven pine trees currently in the park. Park workers will plant eleven more pine trees today. How many pine trees will the park have when the workers are finished? 21.. Dan picked eleven pears and Fred picked thirty - three pears from the pear tree. How many pears were picked in all? 22.. Joan found 56 seashells and 34 starfish on the beach. She gave 31 of the seashells to Mike. How many seashells does Joan now have?

8 23.. Melanie's high school played 7 football games this year. She attended 3 games. How many football games did Melanie miss? 24.. Sandy has 23 violet and 37 black balloons. Benny has 39 violet balloons. How many violet balloons do they have in total? 25.. Alyssa has saved 4900 pence from selling lemonade. How many pounds does Alyssa have? 26.. The school band is going to a competition. Five members play the flute. There are three times as many members who play the trumpet. There are eight fewer trombone players than trumpeters, and eleven more drummers than trombone players. There are twice as many members that play the clarinet as members that play the flute. There are four fewer tuba players than there are trombone players, but three more members play the French horn than play the trombone. The band director, his assistant, and six parent volunteers are also going. How many seats are needed on the bus?

If each classroom holds thirty students, how many classrooms are needed at the school? 28.. Benny has 9 green balloons, he gave Nancy 8 of the balloons. Fred bought one hundred ninety - five crayons that came in packs of fifteen. There were three colors of crayons. How many packs of crayons did Fred buy?

10 31.. Ann is baking cookies. She bakes three dozen oatmeal raisin cookies, two dozen sugar cookies, and four dozen chocolate chip cookies. Ann gives away two dozen oatmeal raisin cookies, 1.5 dozen sugar cookies, and 2.5 dozen chocolate chip cookies. How many total cookies does she keep? 32.. A moving company is hired to take 578 clay pots to a florist shop. The florist will pay the moving company a $200 fee, plus $1 for every pot that is delivered safely. The moving company must pay the florist $4 each for any pots that are lost or broken. If two pots are lost, four pots are broken, and the rest are delivered safely, how much should the moving company be paid? 33.. Samantha and Krystal have twenty minutes to walk to school together. It takes them six minutes to get to the corner where the library is. It takes them another seven minutes to get to the fire station. How much longer do they have to get to school without being late?

How much more does he need to earn to give him the 60 he needs to buy a new hockey stick? 36.. Dawn has 21 candies that she wants to make into parcels of 3. She wants to give these parcels to 5 of her friends. How many parcels will she have left over? 37.. Jennifer can solve three multiplication problems in one minute. Peter can solve multiplication problems four times as fast as Jennifer. How many multiplication problems can Peter solve in one minute?
