2 Padres officially sign Trevor Cahill, designate Jabari Blash Dennis Lin Contact Reporter The Padres officially signed right-hander Trevor Cahill to a one-year, $1.75 million contract Friday. In a corresponding roster move, the club designated outfielder Jabari Blash for assignment. Cahill, who attended Vista High, will compete for a rotation job in spring training. He had larger offers elsewhere but chose San Diego largely because it presented the clearest path to starting games. The Oceanside native can earn performance bonuses of $250,000 each for 15, 20 and 25 starts, and bonuses of $125,000 each for 40 and 50 relief appearances. He would get a one-time $250,000 assignment bonus if traded. Cahill has pitched the first inning just four times over the last two seasons. The 28- year-old will attempt to re-harness some of the ability that made him one of baseball s better young starters early in his career. A second-round draft pick by Oakland in 2006, Cahill has made 174 starts over eight seasons with the Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs. He is with a 4.14 ERA as a starter, compared to 6-6 with a 3.24 ERA in 88 relief appearances. His most effective work in a bullpen came last season, when he posted a 2.74 ERA in 50 appearances, including one spot start, with the Cubs. In 65 2/3 innings, he recorded 66 strikeouts against 35 walks. Cahill will have to rein in his walk rate to rediscover success as a starter, but he fits a profile the Padres have sought this winter. The sinkerballer s 56 percent groundball rate ranked among the league leaders last season. Other candidates for the Padres rotation are Clayton Richard, Jhoulys Chacin, Luis Perdomo, Christian Friedrich, Jarred Cosart, Paul Clemens, Tyrell Jenkins and Cesar 2

The Padres maintain some interest in veterans such as former Cy Young winner Jake Peavy, but the front office notably has exercised restraint in adding starting pitchers; like Cahill, Richard and Chacin signed one-year, $1.75 million deals. Blash, 27, debuted in the majors last season and struggled amid limited playing time. The Rule 5 draft selection never was able to showcase his considerable power, hitting.169 with three home runs in 84 plate appearances. Blash would have been a long shot to break camp with the Padres. The team has four young outfielders Hunter Renfroe, Manuel Margot, Travis Jankowski and Alex Dickerson who expect to see significant time in

Cahill, who turns 29 in March, posted a 2.74 ERA in 50 relief appearances (65 2/3 innings) for the Cubs last season, striking out 66 and walking 35. He did not pitch in the postseason as the Cubs won their first World Series title since Hot Stove Tracker Cahill is a Southern California native, having attended Vista High School, which is less than an hour north of San Diego. He will compete for a spot in what looks to be a wide-open starting rotation, with a relief role as a backup option. Of Cahill's 262 Major League appearances over eight seasons, 174 have been starts, though he only started four games over the last two seasons. Cahill's career ERA as a starter is 4.14, and as a reliever, In order to make room for Cahill on the 40-man roster, San Diego designated outfielder Jabari Blash for assignment. The 27-year-old made his big league debut for the Padres last season, and in 84 plate appearances hit.169/.298/.324 with three home runs and five RBIs. 7 Padres Add Another San Diego Native RHP Trevor Cahill gets a shot at a rotation spot By Derek Togerson In their quest for starting pitching the Padres have dipped in to the bullpen of the World Series champions. Vista native Trevor Cahill agreed to a one year, $1.75 million deal with his hometown team. On Friday he passed his physical to make the deal official. Cahill appeared in 50 games for the Cubs, all but one as a reliever, in Cahill was selected in the 2nd round of the MLB Draft by the A s out of Vista High School in He was going to head to Dartmouth before pro ball got in the way so he is a smart guy. Cahill reached the big leagues at the age of 21 and was an All-Star a year later, going 18-8 with a 2.97 ERA and a 4.0 WAR. He has not enjoyed that level of success since. Cahill was traded to the Diamondbacks and lost his role in the starting rotation. Arizona traded him to Atlanta, who then flipped him to Chicago. It was on the North Side that Cahill reinvented himself as a full-time reliever. But, much like Drew Pomeranz last year, Cahill has longed to return to the starting rotation. He will get that chance in Spring Training and is a good candidate to re-claim his past success working with Padres Pitching Coach Darren Balsley, a man who has resuscitated the careers of several pitchers including former San Diego State star Aaron Harang and Jon Garland. The Padres now have at least the following pitchers vying for the five spots in the rotation: Trevor Cahill, RHP Luis Perdomo, RHP Clayton Richard, LHP Christian Friedrich, LHP Jhoulys Chacin, RHP Paul Clemens, RHP Jarred Cosart, RHP Tyrell Jenkins, RHP Robbie Erlin, LHP Cesar Vargas, RHP Dinelson Lamet, RHP (not on 40-man roster) If he does not win a rotation spot Cahill has proven to be an effective reliever so the Padres will get some use out of him. 7
