STELLAR START--Making just his second big league start last night, Heath Fillmyer dominated the Detroit lineup for 6.2 innings, surrendering a pair of runs inherited by the KC bullpen in the seventh... Fillmyer, who was acquired by the Royals from Oakland this offseason, surrendered a walk and two singles in his first two innings, before setting down 15-straight hitters from the second to the seventh...he became the second Royal to allow three hits or fewer and record six strikeouts or more over at least 6.2 innings within his first two MLB starts, joining Doug Bird, who did it on Sept. 6, 1975 in a 4-3 win at the Angels. MONDI S BACK--Infielder Adalberto Mondesi was reinstated from the Family Medical Emergency List this afternoon after missing the first four games following the All-Star break...the 22-year-old switch-hitter is batting.250 with five doubles, three homers and 13 runs scored in 21 games with Kansas City this season, after starting the year on the disabled list...in a corresponding move, the club has optioned outfielder Paulo Orlando to Omaha (AAA). FAST OUT OF THE GATE--Kansas City used a two-out, two-run single from Lucas Duda to plate two more first-inning runs last night, its third multi-run opening frame on this homestand...as a club, the Royals are batting an American League-best.292 (113-for-387) in the first frame, while their 70 runs are second-most in the AL and rank fourth in the Majors, behind Colorado (82), Arizona (78) and Cleveland (73)...Whit Merrifield has hit at or near the top of KC s batting order this season and is tied for the AL lead in first-inning on-base percentage (.430) and ranks second in batting average (.364), among players that have at least 80 plate appearances in the first. TRIP TO THE BRONX ON DECK--Following tomorrow s series finale with Detrot, Kansas City will embark on an 11-day, 10-contest road swing which begins with a four-game set at Yankee Stadium, beginning Thursday...the long-time AL rivals will meet Thursday and Friday evening at 6:05 CT, while the Saturday and Sunday contests feature 12:05 CT starts...new York took two of three from the Royals here in May and lead in the all-time series by a count, including in the Bronx...KC s last series win at Yankee Stadium came in TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Jordan Zimmermann (4-1, 3.71) vs. RHP Burch Smith (0-1, 5.98) Career Career Jordan Zimmermann vs. Royals Major League Record 4-1 (3.71 ERA) Burch Smith vs. Tigers Major League Record 0-1 (5.98 ERA) BURCH SMITH is making his third start of the season and 27th appearance, while it s career start No. 10 and his 37th overall outing it s his first career start against Detroit and second appearance...the 28-year-old right-hander was acquired via trade from the Mets, who selected him from Tampa Bay in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft he was originally selected by San Diego in the 14th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma. SHORT START ON SHORT REST--Burch last worked in KC s final game before the All-Star break, July 15 in Chicago, tossing the first 2.0 innings in a 10-1 loss to the White Sox...he was charged with two runs on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts in his abbreviated start on three days of rest...he surrendered both runs in the first inning, allowing a leadoff single to Yoan Moncada and a two-out, two-run homer to Daniel Palka, before retiring the final four hitters he faced...smith had previous started on July 11 at Target Field, taking a no-decision in the Royals 8-5 loss to the Twins. WHAT A RELIEF--Smith made his first 24 appearances of this season in relief, posting a 5.40 ERA (23 ER in 38.1 IP), while leading Royals relievers with 39 strikeouts (9.2 K/9) he was much improved over his last five relief appearances, in which he recorded 10.0 scoreless innings, the second-longest scoreless streak by a Royals reliever in 2018, trailing only fellow Rule 5 pick, Brad Keller, who had 10.2 consecutive scoreless innings from May 1-23 before joining the starting rotation on May 30 Smith s streak was halted at 11.0 innings in the second inning of his July 11 start in Minnesota prior to joining the rotation, he held Boston the league s top-scoring offense scoreless over 4.0 innings on two hits on July 6, a 10-5 Royals loss, in which he matched a then-season high with 50 pitches. VS. TIGERS--Burch has made one previous appearance vs. Detroit, tossing 1.2 innings of relief in a 12-4 KC defeat at Comerica Park on April 21...he recorded the final two outs in the seventh inning, before allowing four of the first five to reach in the eighth, which included an RBI single by Jeimer Candelario. AT THE K --Smith is making his first start and 15th overall appearance at Kauffman Stadium, entering with a 6.46 ERA (17 ER in 23.2 IP) here, with 12 walks and 23 strikeouts...he has pitched 6.0-straight scoreless innings here, including 2.0 frames vs. Texas on June 19 and 4.0 innings vs. Boston on July 6...including his time with San Diego, Burch has a 6.59 career ERA (30 ER in 41.0 IP) and an 0-2 mark in 18 appearances and four starts at his home venues. HIS JOURNEY--After being Drafted in 2011, Smith rose through San Diego s system, from Rookie ball that year to the big leagues two years later, when he became the Padres first 2011 draftee to reach the Majors he made 10 appearances (7 starts) with San Diego in 2013, including his first Major League win on Sept. 15 in Atlanta, when he held the Braves to three hits over 7.0 scoreless innings, with a career-high 10 strikeouts he started the following season at Triple-A El Paso, where his season ended after just two starts due to a right forearm strain he was named a Rising Star in the Arizona Fall League later in 2014, before he was acquired by Tampa Bay that offseason as part of a three-way trade with Washington that included former Royals prospect, Wil Myers Burch was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery the following April, which kept him out of action for all of he made his debut in the Rays organization in 2017 three years after he last pitched and posted a 2.40 ERA (15 ER in 56.1 IP) in 13 outings (12 starts) across three levels, including a 1.65 ERA (3 ER in 16.1 IP) in three starts with Triple-A Durham he pitched again in the Arizona Fall League last fall, posting a 3.98 ERA (9 ER in 20.1 IP) and.176 opponents average (12-for-68) in six starts.
