7 Wellsville Nitros Baseball The Nitros are part of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The team plays against teams from Syracuse, Sherrill, Houghton, Olean, Hornell, Rochester, Cortland and Rome. The New York Collegiate Baseball League, founded in 1978, is a summer wood bat development league for professional baseball. Major League Baseball funds a small portion of the league s annual budget. The league gives college players who have not yet signed a professional contract the opportunity to develop their skills at a higher level of play, gain experience with wood bats, and be evaluated by scouts. The NYCBL is located in scenic Upstate New York. Teams play a 46 game regular season schedule with games beginning on May 30th and ending in late July. All games are 9 innings, with doubleheaders scheduled as two 9 inning games. The All-Star game is played in mid-july, and the League Championship Series concludes in early August. Since 1998 the Nitros have continued to have a significant influence in Allegany County, NY and surrounding areas, particularly on our youth. Young, upcoming athletes are motivated to aspire to higher levels because of their interactions with our players and coaching staff. As role models to our youth we can proudly point out that 37 former Nitro Players have advanced and signed Major League Baseball Contracts since The Nitros organization believes in giving back to the community. Every year the Nitro players and coaching staff conduct reading programs in various elementary schools around the county, in addition the team conducts several free baseball clinics for area boys and girls. The Nitros are a 501c(3) not for profit corporation and exist solely because of community and business donations. *Image from
