JUNIS RECALLED--The Royals today officially recalled right-handed pitcher Jakob Junis from Omaha (AAA) so that he can make the start tonight against the Astros...to make room on the roster, Kansas City optioned right-handed reliever Seth Maness to the Storm Chasers...Junis will be making his second career big league start, also starting the first game of a doubleheader in Minnesota on May 21...the Royals are currently down two starters who opened the season in the rotation with the injuries to Danny Duffy (right oblique strain) and Nate Karns (right extensor strain/nerve irritation). WHIT S ROLL HALTED--Whit Merrifield was moved to the top of the order last night in hopes of taking advantage of his recent surge, hitting in 19 consecutive games entering the series opener...unfortunately, even with the extra at bat, it wasn t hit night as Merrifield went 0-for-5 to snap what was the longest hitting streak in the Majors for his 19-gamer has passed earlier 17-game streaks by Mike Trout and Jean Segura, which were tops in the Majors prior Whit s stretch...merrifield s streak tied the longest by a Royal since Alex Gordon s 19-game streak in April, 2011 as the most recent streak of such magnitude...whit, who fell to.296 on the year with last night s 0 fer, is still batting.380 (27-for-71) with four doubles, a triple, three homers, nine RBI, 10 runs and five walks in his last 20 games. PEREZ STILL HOLDING ALL-STAR LEAD--Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is making his bid for a fifth consecutive trip to the All-Star Game as he continues to lead all A.L. catchers after two ballot announcements with 692, 867 votes, nearly 150,000 more votes than second place Wellington Castillo of Baltimore...a threetime starter in the Midsummer Classic, Perez is coming off the 2016 contest when he received the most votes, with 4,965,838, becoming the first Royal to lead the Major League balloting since George Brett in THREE TO PLAY ON EXTENDED STAY--Last night s loss dropped the Royals to 3-4 on this 10-game homestand...kc lost two of three from Detroit to open the stay, despite holding leads in each contest, then took two of three from last year s A.L. champion Cleveland Indians over the weekend...the Astros are here through Thursday then the Royals hit the road for a 9-game journey...overall, the Kansas City is in The K this year, coming off of a 2016 season in which KC was at home. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch. SOLID FIRST MLB START--Jakob is making his second start in the Major Leagues, first since May 21, when he worked 4.2 innings in KC s 6-4 victory at Target Field in the opening game of a doubleheader...he allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts, but was forced from the game prior to qualifying for the win...he retired 12 of the first 16 Twins he faced, before two walks and two singles led to a pair of runs in the fifth...following that start, he was optioned back to Omaha (AAA) as the Royals took Ian Kennedy off the disabled list to start the nightcap. TOUGH ON LEFTIES--Between his time with the Royals and Omaha, Jakob has been difficult for left-handed hitters to solve, holding them to a.208 average (16- for-77) combined...he s also totaled 26 strikeouts vs. lefties in their 82 plate appearances against him (31.7 percent)...it s a reversal from a year ago when, left-handers batted.283 (64-for-226) against him with a.429 slugging percentage, between his outings at Northwest Arkansas and Omaha.
