Date Site Score WP LP Att. 8/6 KC 8/7 KC 8/8 KC LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT--Two weekends after sweeping the Twins at home, Kansas City could not avoid the brooms at Target Field yesterday, falling the Royals trailed most of the afternoon, but put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the ninth with two down, but could not come up with the clutch hit, finishing the road trip at after Lucas Duda gave KC an early lead, Minnesota rallied back on Jake Cave s grand slam in the second off starter Danny Duffy...Duffy, who had allowed just one run in his previous six road outings, was touched up for six earned on eight hits over 6.0 innings, suffering his 10th setback of the season...trailing by four, the Royals cut the deficit to one on Alex Gordon s RBI single in the fifth and Whit Merrifield s two-run shot in the seventh...merrifield led the Royals attack, going 4-for-5 on the day, his second game with four hits or more this year...kc left nine men on base, including two in each of the final two frames, going 2-for-9 overall with runners in scoring position. A WEEK OF INTERLEAGUE--This evening kicks off a six-game, seven-day stretch against National League foes, with the Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals visiting Kauffman Stadium...the Royals and Cubs are meeting for the first time since KC s magical 2015 campaign and the first time at The K since 2011, with 7:15 contests each of the next three nights...after a day off on Thursday, the Royals will complete the I-70 series for the year with a three-game set vs. the Cardinals, featuring 7:15, 6:15 and 1:15 start times...kansas City took two-of-three at Busch Stadium earlier this year, but trails in all-time work by a count...the Royals are 3-6 against the Senior Circuit this year and still have games at Pittsburgh (September 17-19) and Cincinnati (September 25-26) remaining after this week. ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END--Danny Duffy saw his historic run of success on the road go by the boards yesterday, suffering his first road defeat since May 13 at Cleveland...he entered yesterday s start having allowed just one run in his previous six start away from home, which spanned 37.2 innings and included a stretch of 19.2 scoreless frames on the road before Jake Cave s second-inning slam...target Field was an unlikely place for Duff s road dominance to end as he entered yesterday with a 4-0 record and a 1.79 ERA in nine previous outings and seven starts at the park, suffering his first loss to the Twins overall since his rookie year (2011). ROYALS RUNNING WILD--Kansas City collected four more steals yesterday, upping their total since the All-Star break to a Major-League best 17...the Royals ripped off 14 of those bags during the recently completed 10-game road trip, recording at least one theft in eight of those contests, going 14-for-16 (87.5%)... Adalberto Mondesi stole second and third base during the ninth inning yesterday and has 11 thefts since being recalled on June 17 tied for second-most in the AL in that span...whit Merrifield, who was thrown out for the first time in 10 attempts yesterday, is tied for tops the Majors with eight steals since the All-Star break. High Jakob s 2018 Starts School, which is about 120 miles west of Wrigley Field. TROUBLE WITH THE LONG BALL--Junis has surrendered 26 homers in 20 starts, one behind Dylan Bundy for the Major League lead of the 26 HR, 17 have been solo, but six of the last nine have come with at least one man on base of the 71 runs he s allowed this season, 41 have come via the longball (57.8%), including a franchise-record tying five HR at Kauffman Stadium vs. the White Sox on April 26 after yielding 12 HR during a five-start stretch from June 8-July 2, he s allowed just two in his last three starts, including a three-run HR (all runs unearned) to Didi Gregorius on July 26 and a leadoff HR to Yoán Moncada Wednesday. EIGHTH MONTH IS A CHARM--Last August proved to be Junis best month in the Majors to this point as he went 3-0 with a 2.96 ERA (9 ER in 27.1 IP) in five outings (4 starts), becoming just the fifth Royals rookie to go 3 0 or better in a calendar month (min. 3 starts), joining: Kevin Appier (August 1990), Rich Gale (July and May 1978), Dennis Leonard (August 1975) and Steve Busby (September 1972) his efforts earned him Royals Pitcher of the Month honors, becoming the first rookie pitcher to win the award since Louis Coleman in 2011 and the first to do it as a starting pitcher since Brian Bannister in August 2007 after going 0-7 with a 7.33 ERA (35 ER in 43.0 IP) over eight starts this June and July, Junis snapped a 10-start winless streak with a win on Wednesday, the first day of August. HIDDEN GEM--He made his debut in April, 2017 after six years in the minors as a 29th-round pick in in the Royals 50-year history, his 15 wins with the club are most by a player drafted by Kansas City in the 29th round or later, two better than Jose Santiago (70th round in 1994), who went from VS. INTERLEAGUE--Junis is making his first appearance vs. the Cubs, and is 2-1 with a 4.13 ERA (13 ER in 28.1 IP) in five career Interleague starts in two starts this season, both vs. National League Central opponents, he s 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA (7 ER in 10.0 IP), including a no-decision despite 5.0 innings of two-run ball in a 5-2 Royals win in St. Louis on May 23, and a 5-1 loss in Milwaukee on June 26, in which he allowed five runs over 5.0 innings. AT HOME--Junis is 3-7 with a 5.37 ERA (38 ER in 63.2 IP) in 11 home starts this season, and is winless in his last six starts since his last win on May 18 vs. the Yankees he was 6-2 with a 3.75 ERA (31 ER in 74.1 IP) in his first 14 career outings (12 starts) here, but is 0-5 with a 6.35 ERA (24 ER in 34.0 IP) in his last six starts the winless stretch does, however, include three quality starts, plus 4.0 innings of one-run ball on July 21 vs. Minnesota in his first start after returning from the 10-day DL due to lower back inflammation.
