1 HOME ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS This Papillionaire Bicycle now belongs to you. It will take you to work, wait patiently outside your local cafe, and carry your groceries home. Parts Disassembled from the bicycle frame will be: The front mudguard The front wheel The handlebars and handlebar stem The handlebar grips The saddle and seat post The pedals The rear carrier (if ordered) The bell The basket (comes in a separate box, if ordered). Your bicycle also comes with a small bottle of touch up paint for future use. B. This will ensure that bolts do not strip. 3 of 12

4 C. Getting set up Open the top of the box with the logo and Papillionaire Bicycles facing up. Lift out the bike carefully. Lean the box on its side and allow the bike to rest on your box, with the chain/chain guard facing out. Cut and remove all cable ties, plastic, foam and tape on the bicycle. Make sure each disassembled part (as listed above) is present, and carefully place each part away from the bicycle frame. Once all packaging has been removed, place your bike on a stand. If you do not have a stand, place the bike upright on flat ground. 4 of 12

5 D. Assembly 1. Attaching the Front Mudguard Rotate the bicycle fork so that the front brake calliper faces forward. Note where the front calliper is attached to the fork. On the rear of the fork, you will find the nut that fastens the calliper to the fork. Using the 5mm Allen Key, remove this nut. Carefully put this nut aside as it must be reinserted in the following step. Remove the brake calliper. Put the front mudguard in place align the eyelet on the top of the mudguard with the hole on the front of the fork. Reinstate the brake calliper by feeding it through the eyelet of the mudguard and into its original hole. Using the 5mm Allen Key reinstall the nut holding the brake calliper. Using the 4mm Allen key, remove the small silver bolts at the tip of each side of the fork. You will notice that the front mudguard has a thin silver bar protruding from each side. Align the loop at the end of one silver bar with the corresponding hole from which you just removed the silver bolt. Replace and tighten the bolt. Do the same on the other side. You will notice that the holes are elongated to allow for adjustment if your mudguard is misaligned. 2. Completing the Rear Mudguard Repeat steps above on the back mudguard. You will notice that there are 2 sets of bolts in the vicinity of where the ends of the silver bars should be attached. For this step you should use the bolts closest to the rear of the bicycle. The other set of bolts is for attaching the optional rear carrier. 5 of 12

6 3. Attaching the Front Wheel Remove the outermost nut and washers from each side of the front wheel (i.e. you should have removed two nuts and two washers in total). Insert the front wheel into the dropouts (slots) of the front fork (you may have to let out some of the air in the tyres in order to squeeze the wheel past the brake calliper). Attach the washers on each side, inserting their protruding nibs into the corresponding eyelet in the fork. Attach the nuts and fasten tightly. Make sure that the wheel is centred in the forks. To do this, you can press the front wheel slightly into the ground by placing a bit of pressure on the top of the stem or headset before tightening the bolts. You can now stand the bicycle up on its own using the kickstand. 4. Attaching the Stem Note that the handlebars are already attached to the stem. Generously grease the inside of the fork. Insert the stem into the frame to desired riding height. Once you have found your favoured height, rotate the stem in the frame, so that it is aligned with the fork. If the stem does not slide in freely, you may need to slightly loosen the bolt directly on top with the 6mm Allen Key. Facing the back of the bicycle, grasp the front wheel between your knees, or have a friend hold the fork steady, and turn the 6mm Allen Key in the top of the stem, until you have tightly fastened the stem inside the frame (and fork). Be sure to tighten this bolt as much as possible. 6 of 12

7 5. Attaching the Handlebars The 6mm Alley Key can also be used in the front of the stem. This is for adjusting the handlebar angle. Loosen the bolt with the 6mm Allen Key. Rotate the handlebars to the desired angle. Using the Allen Key, retighten the bolt. 6. Attaching the Brake Cable You will notice that the front brake cable has not been inserted into the front brake lever (the right hand side brake lever). Please also note that the brake cable has an outer, rubber tube and silver wire within. Note the cable coming from the right hand side brake. The end part of the cable is silver (not black). Using a 5mm Allen key, loosen the screw which holds the silver part of the cable. Flip down the black lever next to this screw this lever should remain down at all times. To insert the cable into the brake lever, squeeze the lever completely in to reveal the eyelet. Insert the lug on the end of the silver part of the brake cable into the eyelet. Now pull the outer, rubber cable around and position into brake lever holder. We suggest you look at the left hand brake cable as an example as this will already be installed. 7 of 12

8 7. Adjusting the Brake pads Use your hand to squeeze the front brake pads to the rim of the tyre. Whilst squeezing the brake pads, loosen the screws on both sides with a 4mm Allen Key. Now align the brake pads so that they run along the rim without touching the tyre. Re-tighten both screws. 8. Adjusting the brake tension Using a 5mm Allen key, loosen the screw which holds the silver part of the cable. Squeeze the front brake pads until they touch the rims. At the same time as squeezing the brake pads, pull the end of the brake cable down as far as it will go. Retighten the screw to hold the silver cable in this position. Repeat above steps to adjust the rear brake. 8 of 12

9 9. Attaching the Saddle and Seat Post Remove the saddle and seat post from their box. Rest the saddle upside down on the ground or bench, with the pointy-side facing towards you. Take the seat post and twist the top bracket so that it is pointing towards you. Place the seat post on top of the sliding bars on the saddle. Flip the bracket so that now both brackets can clamp the sliding bars on the saddle. Fasten the bolt with your 6mm Allen Key. Grease the portion of the seat post to be inserted into the frame. Insert the seat post into the frame at your desired seat height. Fasten the seat post into the frame by tightening the bolt at the top of the seat stem (using a 13mm wrench). Make sure to fasten the seat post in the frame so as not to allow the saddle to lower or move while riding. Do no over tighten. To adjust the saddle bracket back or forth to find your desired seating angle, unfasten the bolt underneath the saddle with a 6mm Allen Key. 10. Attaching the Pedals Grease the end of each pedal. Check the end of the pedal axel for the letters R or L. The pedal marked R must be fitted to the right hand side of the bicycle. The pedal marked L must be fitted to the left hand side. The side of the bike with the chain attached to it is the right hand side. Using your fingers, rotate the black threaded attachment of the right pedal into the right crank. Use the Wrench 15mm to fasten the pedal attachment into the crank. The right hand pedal tightens clockwise. Now do the same with the left hand pedal. The left hand pedal tightens anti-clockwise. 9 of 12

10 11. Attaching the STANDARD grips Spray a liberal amount of hairspray or some other lubricating agent into the grips. Insert the grips onto the handlebars. Please note that some force and twisting is needed. A mallet may be used to bang the grips into place. Please note that the shorter grip is fitted on the side with the grip shifter. 12. Attaching the PREMIUM grips Insert the grips on the handlebars, with the outside bolts facing up. Tighten each bolt with a 3mm Allen Key. Insert the black plugs into the outside openings of the handlebars. Please note that the shorter grip is fitted on the side with the grip shifter. 13. Attaching the rear carrier (optional) You will see that there are four unused allen key bolts. Two of these are located just under the seat post and the other two are in the middle of the rear wheel (on either side). Unscrew all four bolts. Hold the rear carrier in place, with the holes of the rear carrier in alignment with the holes in the bike. Replace the allen key bolts. We suggest loosely inserting all four bolts and then adjusting the carrier to the correct position. Tighten all four bolts once the carrier is in position. 12. Final touches You can now attach the bell, which can be fitted anywhere on the handlebars, and any other accessories you have ordered. We recommended pumping your tyres to PSI. 10 of 12

11 E. Accessories 1. Attaching a Peterboro basket Insert the angled end of the post piece into the back of the basket. This is done by sliding the post piece under the weaving. Hold the basket in place. The rounded end of the post piece should sit under the silver ring at the top of the fork. Tie the leather strap around the fork. Attach the buckles to the handlebars. Make sure you do not buckle any cables down. 2. Attaching a wicker basket With a screw driver, create four small openings at either side of the basket - two near the top, and two near the middle. Feed the straps through the holes, with the brackets sticking out in the bottom holes. Attach the buckles to the handlebars. Make sure you do not buckle any cables down. Congratulations, your Papillionaire Bicycle is assembled! We recommend all Papillionaire Bicycles receive regular maintenance from a bicycle mechanic. Be sure to keep your Papillionaire under cover when not in use. In order to extend the life of Papillionaire upgraded leather saddles, we recommend the application of leather oil (appropriate for leather shoes or clothes) once every two months.
