The effect of the Gravity-Loading Countermeasure Skinsuit () upon aerobic exercise performance Julia Attias, Philip A Carvil, Simon Evetts, James Waldie & David A Green Chicago / 14

Disclosure Information 84th Annual AsMA Scientific Meeting Julia Attias I acknowledge the support of Wyle in conducting the study on behalf of the CMSO of ESA I am currently working as a health mentor for Nuffield Health and as a research associate for King s College London I will not discuss off-label use and/or investigational use in my presentation 2 / 14

Introduction Microgravity-induced aerobic de-conditioning (VO2max) Countermeasures are time/resource consuming Earth s Gz loading (Waldie & Newman, 2010) Mk III ~0.8Gz - integration with ergometry countermeasure? VO2max prediction based on HR-VO2 1Gz response 3 / 14

Aims To investigate the effect and tolerability of donning the s during UPRIGHT and RECUMBENT ergometry (aerobic exercise) vs. loose fitting gym () clothing To investigate the effect of the on VO2max predictions based on the HR-VO2 relationship 4 / 14

Methods Participants: =5; =3; 28±6yrs; 183±10cm; and 77±8kg Astrand Rhyming: sub-max exercise test 75% VO2max Protocol: 20 mins at 75% VO2max when Upright & Recumbent Physiological recordings: Heart rate, core temperature, lactate & breath-by-breath respiratory parameters Subjective ratings: Rating of perceived exertion, thermal comfort, movement discomfort and body control 5 / 14

Results: Delta Minute Ventilation (VE) 6 / 14

Results: Delta Oxygen Consumption (VO2) 7 / 14

Results: Delta Heart rate (HR) 8 / 14

Results: HR-VO2 relationship -1) * 60 ax(l/kgin 2m PredictVO ASTRAND UPRIGHT RECUMBENT 9 / 14

Results: Delta Lactate & core temperature at 20 mins Δ Lactate from baseline (mmol/l) UPRIGHT Mean ± SEM 1.57 ± ±0.6 Δ Temperature from baseline ( C) UPRIGHT Mean ± SEM 0.56 ± ±0.1 RECUMBENT 1.81 ± ±0.9 RECUMBENT 0.55 ± ± / 14

Results: Subjective reports at 20 mins Thermal Comfort Mean (± 95% CI) UPRIGHT 2 ( ) 3 (2.3-3)* 2 ( ) 3 (2.3-3) Movement Discomfort Mean (± 95% CI) UPRIGHT 7 ( )* UPRIGHT 2 ( ) 7 (5.5-8)* RECUMBENT 16 ( )* 13 ( ) 16 ( )* UPRIGHT RECUMBENT 13 ( ) Body Control Mean (± 95% CI) RECUMBENT 3 ( ) RPE Mean (± 95% CI) RECUMBENT 3 ( ) 6 ( )* 2 ( ) 6 ( )* 11 / 14

Discussion No difference in HR, core temp, lactate and VO2 VE greater in the recumbent orientation (at 20 minutes) and in the (but only up to 3 minutes) Subjective ratings worsened but did not impede on exercise an exercise enhancer - HR-VO2 affected by However, in RECUMBENT ( HR) vs. UPRIGHT ( HR) 12 / 14

Conclusion did not significantly alter physiological responses to ergometry when upright or recumbent Mechanism of HR-VO2 dissociation is unclear and warrants further study Real VO2max testing Biomechanical/metabolic efficiency Integration with ergometry and/or treadmill countermeasures Terrestrial application Athletic or disuse/unloading rehab 13 / 14
