1 Trans Canada Trail Véloroute Voyageur Cycling Route WAYFINDING SIGNAGE PLAN for Low to Moderate Volume Highways Roadway Trail Section: Markstay-Warren, St. Charles, French River and West Nipissing Road Jurisdiction: Ontario Ministry of Transportation (excluding Highway 17) Introduction Discovery Routes Trails Organization has formulated a set of signage guidelines to ensure a fundamentally consistent approach to signing the regional roadway trails within the network while taking into consideration the application of route signage on long-distance bicycle routes in other jurisdictions across the Province. This Signage Plan applies these guidelines for bicycle wayfinding along the roadway connections that form part of Discovery Routes Trails Organization s regional network of trails. Currently two designated on-road cycling routes have been identified for development within the Discovery Routes network; the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) Roadway Trail within the Township of Nipissing and the Municipality of Callander, and the Véloroute Voyageur Cycling Route connecting east of Sudbury to the Ottawa Valley. These two routes overlap on 192km between Sudbury and Callander. For the purpose of this Signage Plan, only wayfinding signs are included on sections of the TCT Roadway Trail and Véloroute Voyageur Cycling Route on moderate volume route segments under the MTO s jurisdiction in the Municipality of Markstay-Warren, Municipality of St. Charles, Municipality of French River and Municipality of West Nipissing. Wayfinding signs along Highway 17 where the recommended facility type is buffered paved shoulders as described in the 2015 Voyageur Cycling Route Feasibility Study and Implementation Plan and consistent with the Ministry s Bikeway Design Manual are not included in the request at this time. Other types of signage, such as warning and regulatory signs are not included within this plan. More specific guidance on signage and markings for bicycle facilities can be found in OTM Book 18, MTO s Bikeways Design Manual and TAC Bikeway Traffic Control Guidelines for Canada. Wayfinding Signage Types Wayfinding signage is made up of a group of signs that could include as many as two route identifiers, a bicycle route marker and, in specific situations a directional arrow. Supplemental wayfinding signs are recommended as an interim measure at the intersection of roadways where the appropriate bicycle

2 facility as described in OTM Book 18 is not in place. As the route develops there will be an opportunity to expand wayfinding signage to communicate other information to bicycle route users such as distances in kilometres to major attractions and settlement areas. In most situations, two wayfinding signage clusters are recommended in each direction at an intersection. These comprise of a decision sign before the turn and a confirmation sign after the turn. The following figure illustrates the recommended wayfinding signage specifications. Figure A: Wayfinding sign specifications for TCT Roadway Trail and Véloroute Voyageur Cycling Route

3 Two sign series: English text and French text equivalent Aluminum plate blank with reflective sheeting surface Mounting Location: Located in advance of intersections with high volume/ high speed roadways that do not currently have the appropriate cycling facility as described in OTM Book 18. Concept pictured here. Refinement of design will be determined in consultation with MTO and other road authorities. French text equivalent must be located beyond the English sign equivalent as described in OTM Book 1B. Signs should be placed far enough apart to both be legible, but close enough so that their individual messages can be recognized as being equivalent. Figure B: Supplemental wayfinding signage at intersections with high volume/ high speed roadways with no cycling specific infrastructure Overview Map of Location Description of the Cycling Route West End The 2015 Voyageur Cycling Route Feasibility Study and Implementation Plan identifies a 380km cycling route across sections of Northeastern Ontario. The route alignment was proposed following extensive stakeholder and public engagement and using the MTO s Cycling Route Selection Tool to assess experiential and safety and feasibility of the route. All 12 of the municipalities through which the route passes have endorsed the Voyageur Cycling Route (Appendix 2). The cycling route west of North Bay was selected intentionally to share alignment with the Trans Canada Trail.

4 This Signage Plan encompasses the Voyageur Cycling Route s west end as described in the Feasibility Study as Section B and C and the west portion of Section D. This segment of the route connects the communities of Sturgeon Falls, Cache Bay, Lavigne, Noelville, St. Charles, Hagar and Coniston avoiding the use of Highway 17 as much as possible. It also has a direct connection to Trans Canada Trail development in Greater Sudbury by Rainbow Routes Association and the development of the Lake Huron North Channel Route by the Waterfront Regeneration Trust. The moderate volume highways that form part of this segment are Highway 535, 528 and 64. Requested Wayfinding Sign Locations Discovery Routes is requesting approval for the installation of forty-one (41) wayfinding signs on moderate volume highways as illustrated on the following maps. Visualization of the proposed sign can be viewed in an online ArcGIS map at The attribute table can be downloaded from this application by selecting the layer list/ open attribute table (located beside the legend). Georeferenced spatial data is attached in comma separated value (CSV) format. It should be noted that sign sites identified in this report are based on the recommended placement specifications in Table 1 and field investigation, the final sign location may vary depending on individual site conditions at the time of installation.
