2 What is Street Smart Primary? As part of its commitment to road safety, MAC and RAA have recently launched the Street Smart Primary program. The community program has teachers visiting primary schools to deliver road safety lessons at no charge. 7 KEEPING SAFE We all have the right to feel safe at all times. W We need to make choices about finding a safe place to play. W Try to find a place away from the traffic and the road. Where is a safe place for you to play? Draw yourself playing in a safe place.

8 HOLD MY HAND Cars and other traffic on the road can travel fast. Children must hold the hand of an adult. Before you and an adult cross the road remember to: Trace around your hand. Write in the names of five people who you can hold hands with when you cross the road

9 BEING SEEN Cars and trucks are big. Children are not. People in cars or trucks sometimes can t see children near roads or in between cars. Is it safe to cross between parked cars? Yes / No Why? How should you cross the road? Draw yourself crossing the road safely. (Include a picture of an adult holding your hand.)

10 THE SAFETY DOOR The safety door on the car is the rear door nearest the footpath. Why should you always use the safety door? Put a big red circle on the safety door.

11 Protect your head CYCLING SAFETY W Join the dots below to draw a bike helmet W Draw a design on the helmet True or False Bike riders wear helmets. The straps can be loose. Try the helmet before buying. A broken helmet can be worn.

12 BIKE PARTS All children under the age of 12 are allowed to ride on the footpath. Remember you must wear a bike helmet that is correctly fitted and fastened. Label the important parts of the bike. (Choose from: seat, pedal, bell, light, reflector, chain and handbrakes)

13 STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK Remember when you are about to cross the road you need to: S _ at the edge of the footpath. L _ to the right and left. L _ for the sound of traffic that you may not be able to see. T,do I have time to cross safely? The RAA recommends that children should always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road.

14 Buckle up COMPLETE AT HOME Younger children need to be in a safety seat and wearing a seat belt. Older children can wear a seat belt. What do you do? Draw yourself wearing a seat belt or a restraint between the two children.

15 HOME ACTIVITY A message for parents Help your child to be safer on the road. Discuss the picture below. W What is wrong with this picture? W What do you think the mum might be saying to her children? W Is this how children should cross the road? W What is the right way to cross the road?

16 Is your child in the right restraint? Child restraint laws, introduced in South Australia in July 2010, require children to be restrained in an approved age appropriate child restraint up to at least the age of 7 years. The RAA Safety Centre provides independent and impartial advice on the safest restraint for children at every stage of their growth.
