1 VELODYNE REFERENCE MANUAL W E LCOME TO V E LO DY N E Wind resistance, hills, pursuits, attacks, time trials; aerobic fitness, cadence eff i c i e n c y, speed: the exhilaration and the physical benefits of competitive cycling are unmistakable. And they're a v a i l a b l e indoors, on your own bike, with your new Ve l o d y n e. That's because your Velodyne's breakaway simulation technology duplicates the delicate relationship between pedaling resistance and rider inertia. It simulates the actual physical demands of both road and track racing. It simulates specific courses and lets you create your own course. The Velodyne also monitors your heart rate, as well as power output, caloric expenditure, cadence, and speed. When properly calibrated, the accuracy of the Velodyne power output indication is b e t t e r than 5 %. With the Velodyne you have the latest advances in computer technology and sports science at your command as you train. The software is menu driven so most of the information necessary to operate your Velodyne appears on the screen. In addition, this manual will supply important details for each p r o g r a m, helping you plan your workouts and use your Velodyne more enjoyably. 3 SAFETY INSTRU C T I O N S Read the following instructions carefully before using the Velodyne. DANGER Do not open the enclosed portion of the Velodyne. Refer all servicing to Velodyne Sports. K E E P CHILDREN AWAY FROM THE VELODYNE: Hands and feet may get caught in the spinning bicycle wheel, pedals or chain which could result in serious injury. WARNING Do not unplug the power cord when the Velodyne is on. Turn the power switch off first, then remove plug from wall. Turn the Velodyne off at the power switch when not in use. Remove your bicycle from the unit: unplug and store the machine when it is not going to be used. CAUTION CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE BEGINNING ANY EXERCISE PROGRAM. Press the STOP button on the control panel to slow the tire down when you are done riding. Do not use your bicycle brake to stop the Velodyne. Do not operate the Velodyne when cord is frayed or damaged. Keep power cord away from heated surfaces and water. Keep Velodyne away from walls to allow for proper ventilation. Keep power cord away from the spinning bicycle wheel. To ensure proper functioning of your Velodyne, do not install attachments or accessories to the Velodyne not provided by Velodyne Sports.

4 Attach power cable here Pin and Lock Bolt ASSEMBLY INSTRUC- TIONS 1. Insert the display frame tube into the frame opening at the front of the tube set. 2. Tighten the two allen head lock screws. 3. Insert the display extension tube into the display frame tube and feed the cable through. 4. Set the extension to the desired height and secure with the pin and lock screw. Be careful not to force the pin into the cable - make sure the cable is not blocking the pin hole. 5. Attach the display head to the top of the extension tube with the supplied bolt. 6. Connect the power cable into the display head. 7. Connect the power module to the rear of the Velodyne (next to the power switch) and also connect the AC cord to the module and the AC outlet. 8. Apply power by pressing the power switch (located next the the power input plug). The MOUNTING YOUR BIKE Note: Make sure both sides are set to the same height to insure that the wheel is vertical. 1. Set your bike on the Velodyne and attach the front fork to the fork mounting support and tighten. 2. Adjust the position of the rear axle support clamps to match your rear axle. Swap out your rear skewer with the supplied one if it does not fit into the axle supports. 3. Adjust the in-out position of the axle clamps to center the rear wheel over the drive wheel. Do not tighten yet. 4. Apply a small amount of vertical force on the seat to set the rear wheel into position. Lock the vertical position of the axle clamps with the quick release clamps. 5. Tighten the in-out knobs to secure the wheel to the Velodyne. The support bars should bow out slightly. Don t over tighten. 6. Test by rocking the frame left and right while seated on the bike. 5 SCREEN AND KEYBOARD FUNCTIONS Menu Select Keys These four keys are the heart of the Velodyne control system. They are used to select options from the menu on the right hand side of the LCD screen, allowing you to move from screen to screen. These keys are soft-keys because their function will change depending on what screen you are using. The function you can perform is displayed on the LCD screen next to each active key. STOP MENU SELECT VELODYNE 10-Key Numeric Pad The keypad used to enter numeric information such as age, weight, percent grade, and rider level. STOP Key The STOP Key clears the LCD screen and returns you to the opening screen. In doing so, it resets all values to zero and applies full load to the electronic braking system. (use STOP if you need to stop the bike quickly) E N T E R CURSOR BACK SPACE... HELP Backspace Key The BACKSPACE Key allows you to back up and correct information entered from the 10-key Numeric Pad. Enter Key The ENTER Key confirms information from the 10-Key Pad. To store quantitative information-age, weight, rider level-use the 10 Key Pad and then press ENTER. Cursor Keys The CURSOR Arrow Keys move the cursor indicators on the LCD to choose menu items. These keys are useful for quickly adjusting power or grade in the Exercise Mode screens. They also set the negative grade when you are creating your own course in the race screens. Help Key The HELP Key confirms information for the displayed screen. USER SETUP 2

6 ENTER PERS0NAL DATA The Velodyne can be personalized for up to 20 different users by entering personal data into the Setup screen. This is important as the Velodyne uses this information to calculate the correct load to apply while you are riding. 1. Age Note that you can change your target heart rate limits at any time using the Auto Target Zone screen. Based on your age, the Velodyne automatically calculates your estimated maximum heart rate and presets high and low limits at 70 and 85 percent of the estimated maximum. Use the 10-Key Pad to enter your age and press Enter. 2. Weight The Velodyne automatically calculates the rider's frontal area based on rider weight and sets the wind resistance. Use the 10-Key Pad and press Enter. 3. Sex The Velodyne automatically calculates your estimated maximum heart rate based on the following formulas: Female: Age = Maximum Heart Rate Male: Age = Maximum Heart Rate 4. User ID Once all personal data is entered, choose a user ID number and press Enter. The Velodyne can store data for 20 individual users and will assign you the next available position. To choose another ID or if all 20 IDs are taken, press the number you wish to take and press Enter. If you do not want to personalize your exercise routine, press the Continue button and the Velodyne will default to the factory setting for a 30 year old, 150 pound male.to edit your personal data, press Set Up Options. Finally, for optimal accuracy, the Velodyne should be calibrated to your bicycle every time re-install your bike. Press Set Up Options on the Main Menu and select Calibrate. USER SETUP 3

7 SET UP OPTIONS From the Main Menu, press the NEW USER soft key. Press ENTER PER- SONAL DATA This screen allows you to modify your personal data (age, weight, sex). At the screen prompt, enter the requested information. EXAMPLE: AGE: 25 Press ENTER WEIGHT: 150 Press ENTER SEX: Select from the menu keys, MALE or FEMALE From the Main Menu, you can modify your personal data by selecting SETUP OPTIONS. Select 1. Review Personal Data from the menu list. This screen allows you to modify your personal data (age, weight, sex). 1. Enter your ID number and press Enter to go to your personal settings. 2. Press Modify Data. 3. Press the variable you wish to change and enter new information. Then, press Enter. Other Setup Options: 2. Set Power Units The Velodyne is calibrated to give power read-outs in either watts or horsepower. Press the appropriate menu key to select. 3. Set Data Transmission Time This option allow you to set the time between data samples when you are collecting data on a remote computer. Note this option must be selected and a number between 1 and 256 (seconds) must be selected in order for data transmission to take place. 4. Calibrate One of the unique features of the Velodyne is its ability to account for different rolling resistances caused by changes in rider weight, type and weight of wheels, and wear on the resistance unit. Calibrate every time you remove and replace your bike to keep the highest accuracy. USER SETUP 4

8 CALIBRATION Performing the standard calibration routine after you mount your bike to the Velodyne ensures accuracy levels sufficient for the race simulation and exercise modes. The coast-down calibration is designed to take out differences between bikes, rolling resistance due to differences in mounting technique or tire pressure and variations within the internal load generator. That being said, temperature is often the biggest factor that will changed the calibration results. Always follow the same procedure each time you calibrate. Warm up the machine either by using the internal warmup function for 1/2 hour or ride for at least 20 min. over 200 Watts. The idea is get the system up to the temperature it will be while you are doing your training. Experience has shown that if you follow the above warm-up, the calibration will be consistent and the actual power measured will be within a couple of Watts. Warming up brings the resistance unit up to its operating temperature, and it can be accomplished in one of two ways. NOTE: Be careful not to pedal or move around on your bicycle during the coast-down calibration as motion will affect the accuracy of the rolling resistance calibration. Calibration Results The calibration numbers are not too meaningful to the rider. They were designed as a troubleshooting tool to help identify calibration problems in the field and they relate to constants the program uses to curve fit the coast-down data against the internal standard. The coast-down routine works by using the flywheel inertia twice, once using no load (the long coast-down time) and next using a high load wattage. Its ok for the calibration numbers to vary from time to time and there is no "correct" number. However, if you install your bike one day and the numbers vary more than typical, it might indicate that the bike was installed wrong or tire pressure was too low, for example. 1. Automatic Warm Up Prior to calibration, select Warm Up from the Menu Select Keys. This applies a full current load to the resistance unit. Wait for a half hour and perform the calibration routine. 2. Manual Warm Up for optimal accuracy Perform Step 1 and then ride the Velodyne at the level at which you will be performing the test for minutes. Then perform the calibration routine. TO CALIBRATE 1. Choose Calibrate from Set up Options. The screen will display three sets of values: Default Values, Previous Values, and Current Values. The Default Values are based on the average rider weight and tire type and pressure. Previous Values reflect the last calibration.current Values refer to the new calibration. 2. Select Continue from the Main Menu Keys. Selecting Continue will initiate the calibration routine. 3. Enter the cumulative weight of your bicycle rims, tire, and tube. To enter the weight, use the 10-Key Pad and press ENTER. If you do not know the exact weight, select Light, Medium, or Heavy from the Menu Select Keys. 4. Complete calibration. Follow directions displayed on the LCD screen. Pedal the bicycle up to 25mph, listen for a beep, and begin coasting. When rolling resistance calibration is complete, there will be a second beep. Pedal the Velodyne back up to 25mph and begin coasting again until you hear a third beep. Calibration is complete. 5. Select a value. Default Values, Previous Values, and new Current Values will appear on the screen. Press the appropriate menu key to select a value. USER SETUP 5

9 EXERCISE MODES SELECTABLE GRADE Feels like riding your bike out doors. The power you produce increases as you go faster. (Power you produce is proportional to the cube of your speed). CONSTANT WORKLOAD Power in this mode is independent of your speed or gearing. Power is measured as force times speed, so as you increase your cadence, the load you feel (the force) is reduced, thus keeping your power constant. HINT: In the CONSTANT WORK- LOAD mode, keep your cadence relatively high as you increase the workload. This will prevent you from stalling (not being able to provide enough force to turn the crank). The Exercise Modes offer you one of three protocols: Selectable Grade, Constant Workload, and Auto Target Zone. SELECTABLE GRADE You will find this mode useful for warming up, training for hill riding and for interval training. As you ride in the Selectable Grade Mode, the Velodyne provides a constant display of nine important variables: Elapsed time Distance Power Speed Cadence Calories burned Heart rate Average speed Percent grade 1. Choose a hill gradient from the keyboard. After a grade is entered, the appropriate load is applied to the rear wheel to simulate the hill. Grades from 0-9 percent can be entered directly from the keyboard. Grades from percent are entered by using the Cursor arrow key. For example, start riding with the default 0 Grade, press 2 and a 2% grade is selected. 2. To change grade while riding, use the Cursor Key. Press the Cursor up arrow and the grade is now 3%. T h e faster you ride the more power you produce (just like on the road). Select Turn windload off to remove the effect of wind not affect the load produced from the grade. To quickly return to a flat grade, press 0. For example, to ride a hill interval, watch the clock and at each even minute press a grade, say 5. Ride as hard as you can and at the end of the minute, press 0 to recover. Repeat 10 times. You will notice at you get fitter, the speed you maintain at the end of each interval will increase (thus increasing your ability to produce power). CONSTANT WORKLOAD This mode enables you to ride at a constant workload, measured in either watts or horsepower. As you ride, the Velodyne constantly adjusts the load to keep your workload at the same level, independent of gearing, cadence, or speed. Note that in this mode, at a given power, as you ride faster your legs will feel a lighter load. Conversely, as your cadence slows, you have to apply an increasing effort to move the pedals. 1. Use the Cursor Key to choose your load level. Your power can be set in increments of 5 Watts up to a maximum of Horsepower is set in increments of approxi- EXERCISE 6

10 mately.033 up to a maximum of As you press the up or down arrow, the applied load will change. 2. Use the Keyboard to change loads while riding. You can also enter the new target power on the keypad then press Enter. Just press a single number 1 = 100 Watts, 2 = 200 Watts etc. Using our interval example, you can easily do power intervals by entering, say 3 for 300 Watts, and riding that for the interval duration. Press 0 to recover. Power intervals are good because if you can turn the crank, you are producing the power. As your body starts to fatigue while you are training on the road (or in the Constant Grade mode), your speed may drop, thus you do not produce your target power during the entire interval. In the Constant Workload mode, the Velodyne constantly adjusts the power even as you start to fade (hence the stall comment earlier). The Status box will show one of these messages: WARM UP INCREASE SPEED DECREASE EFFORT The Smile means you re doing fine in your zone! AUTO TARGET ZONE This mode monitors your heart rate and automatically adjusts the load to keep your heart rate in your "target zone" (see Enter Personal Data) as defined by your personal upper and lower threshold limits. The Auto Target Zone mode gradually prompts you into your target zone by systematically increasing the workload. Speed, power, cadence, and caloric expenditure are continually monitored. Heart rate is shown on a linear scale with upper and lower limit bar. Once you reach the target zone, the Velodyne will automatically will increase or decrease the load to keep you in the zone. This mode is a good watching TV mode. Just ride and forget what to do. The Velodyne will insure you stay in your target heart rate zone during your workout. 1. To choose the preset target zone, press start. 2. To adjust the high and low limits or the maximum heart rate, use the Change Limits Menu Select Key. Modify the limit of interest and press ENTER then PRE- VIOUS MENU to get back. The Velodyne can only prompt you visually, it cannot help you into your target zone. Until you are used to the Auto Target Zones warm up procedure, set the lower exercise limit at (50-60 percent) to avoid becoming fatigued prior to entering the "training zone." EXERCISE 7

11 RACE SIMULATION Capable of simulating road, track, or time trial races, the Velodyne gives you computer-generated races to choose from. You have the choice of riding the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics Course, the 1986 World Championship course, or the Coors-Morgul-Bismarck. You may also create your own course. In the Track Racing Simulation, you may ride three, four, and five kilometer pursuits on tracks of 200, 250, and 333 meters. The Time Trial Mode allows you to select any distance time trial you wish. ESTABLISHED COURSE 1. Select RACE SIMULATION from the main menu. Choose one of courses programmed into the Velodyne from the list. Use the Cursor arrow keys to scroll down to make your selection. 2. Press Enter. 3. Main Screen. This screen will show the profile of the entire course up to 25 miles in length. As you ride, your position along the course is represented by a small cursor bar. While you ride in the race simulation mode, the Velodyne displays: riding time, speed, distance, cadence, pack speed, and heart rate. 4. Expand Screen. This screen shows segments of up to 2.5 miles of the course you are riding. It will automatically scroll forward as you reach the end of a segment. Because of the improved detail, we recommend that you ride on the Expanded Screen. By pressing the menu key marked Scroll, you will see the entire course in sequential 2.5-mile expanded segments. 5. Note the pack position. This feature is a truly a unique aspect of your Velodyne. Pack position simulates the action of the racing peloton, allowing you to draft, attack, and get dropped. To set the skill level of the pack you are riding in, set the Rider Ability Level by pressing 1-9 on the keypad. When you do this the level will RACE SIMULATION 8

12 change and you will be repositioned in the middle of the pack. If the skill level is set at zero, the pack position will not appear. The pack is indicated in the upper right hand corner of the Velodyne screen. The front and back limits of the 120-foot pack are indicated by two double bars. 6. Press Start. Your position in the pack will be indicated by a wide bar directly in the middle of the pack. While you ride, your position will change as the action of the pack changes, and you will be required to respond to attacks or to attack on your own. There are nine cursor positions in the pack and two positions off both the front and back of the pack. The action of the pack is random and changes each time you ride the course. 7. Pack Speed To see the current speed of the pack, press the appropriate menu key. This allows you to respond to attacks as they happen. While in the pack the Velodyne automatically simulates the effect of the draft. If you break away or get dropped, the Velodyne automatically increases the load to simulate coming out of the draft. The amount of the increase is proportional to your speed just as on the road. Your distance in front or behind the pack is shown in feet to the left of the Pack Position display on the LCD screen. Rider Level Base Speed Attack Speed Hint - If you are dropped from the pack and cannot catch up, press any number and you will be returned to the middle of the pack. The above table shows the base speed for the pack and the maximum speed that will be achieved during attacks.there are six intermediate speeds between the base and maximum speeds. The speeds shown represent those achieved on level ground, speeds on climbs, or descents will be proportionately higher or lower. RACE SIMULATION 9

13 CREATE A COURSE You may design and store up to 10 of your own courses. And you may accurately duplicate any course you may be planning to ride in the future. 1. Select Create a Course from the Race Simulation menu. Making the Grade.. To accurately determine changes in elevations along a course, use a topographical map showing distances and changes in elevation. Then, use this formula to determine grade percentages: ((Elevation 2 - Elevation 1) / Distance) X 100% = Grade Note: All measurements should be made in in the same units (feet or miles, for example). 2. Develop the course one segment at a time. Each course can be up to 25 miles in length and may be divided into as many as 20 segments. A segment is defined by a distance (minimum.1 mile) and a grade (up to + or - 15 percent). Use the 10-Key Pad to define distance and press Enter. 3. Select the percent grade for the first segment. Use the 10-Key Pad. Negative grades are set by pressing the down cursor key after the grade percentage has been set. Press Enter. You can calculate grade by looking at a course profile or topo map or use data from a GPS or altimeter recording cycle computer. %Grade = (Vertical Distance/Horzional Distance)*100 For example, a 100 vertical feet change over a 1000 ft. distance equals a 10% Grade. Note that both numbers must be in the same units to find grade but when you enter distance into the Velodyne, you must use miles or Kilometers (or a decimal fraction). 4. Repeat the procedure. Continue setting the distance and percentage grade for each consecutive segment until you have finished. 5. View Course. To see the course as you develop it, press View Course. The View Course screen is scaled to know you the length of the course you have created and elevation changes between 0 and 4000 feet. Return by pressing Previous Menu. 6. When course is finished, press Course Complete. RACE SIMULATION 10

14 7. Identify the course. Follow the directions on the Velodyne screen; then press Save Course to enter the course into the menu. TO EDIT A COURSE 1. Press the appropriate key from the Menu Select Keys. 2. Identify the element. Use the Cursor Key to indicate which segment, and the element within the segment, you wish to modify. 3. Change the element. Press the Backspace Key, and use the 10-Key Pad to change the element. Then press Enter. To eliminate a segment, press Delete Segment and then Enter. To insert a segment, locate the position of the new segment with the cursor, press Insert Segment, and use the 10-Key Pad to define the distance and grade. Then press Enter. 4. Repeat the procedure for each segment you wish to change. 5. Press Save Course. If a course takes the road profile off the top or the bottom of the viewing screen, none of the segments created after the course leaves the screen will appear on either the View Course or Ride Course screens. However, the course will run in its entirety in the Expanded Screen mode and may be viewed by using the menu key marked Scroll. A cycle computer or GPS that records elevation can also be used to gather course data. The CicloSport CM414 is one example. TIME TRIALS I. Move cursor to Time Trials on the Race Simulation Menu and press Enter. 2. Enter the distance in miles. Use the keypad and press Enter. 3. Wind resistance. Note that the Velodyne uses your weight and the weight of a standard bike with spoked wheels to determine your wind resistance. If you wish to simulate riding a Bike with disk wheels, simply decrease your body weight by 10 percent. 4. Press Start. RACE SIMULATION 11

15 PURSUITS You may choose from several track racing events. You may ride three, four, or five kilometer pursuits, kilometer time trials, flying laps, or standing start timed laps, and you may choose a 200, 250, or 333 meter track. The Velodyne will monitor and display laps, elapsed time, lap split times, speed and heart rate. While riding Pursuits the Velodyne will also display your competition in the form of a ghost rider, as well as the time differential between you and your opponent. TO START 1. Select Pursuit from the Race Simulation Menu and press Enter. 2. Press Start from the Menu Select to proceed with current course, or Press Change Status to change the assigned values. 4. Choose from several values related to Track Length, User ID, and Rider Height and Level. Charts from step 4 in PURSUITS... Distance Choose from three distance options. 3 kilometers - Junior and Women's Championship Distance 4 kilometers - Senior Men's Championship Distance 5 kilometers - Professional Championship Distance Track Length Choose from three track length options: 200 meters 250 meters 333 meters RACE SIMULATION 12

16 Rider Level Choose the ability of your opponent using the keypad and the following chart. The chart is for a four kilometer pursuit. Times will be proportionally higher or lower for three or five kilometer pursuits; average speeds will remain the same. Level Times Average Speed 1 7:30-7: :00-6: :30-6: :00-5: :45-5: :30-5: :15-5: :00-4: :45-4: For individual timed events such as the Kilometer Time Trial or Timed Laps, use a rider level setting of 0. In this setting, no opponent will appear on the screen. When riding timed events shorter than the pursuit distances, you must monitor your own finish time. The Velodyne will not stop timing on its own for distances of less than three kilometers. All other settings are the same as for pursuits. RACE SIMULATION 13

17 DATA LOGGING TO A PC You can use the Velodyne to download ride data to your PC as you are working out. The data can be easily be saved to a file for later analysis. 1. Connect the Velodyne data cable to your PC COM port. You may need a DB25 to DB9 adapter (be sure you get one that uses all of the wires within the DB9 the Velodyne must have pins 4 and 5 of the DB25 connected together in order to work). The cable provided from Velodyne Sports has these pins connected inside. (You may want to remove the plastic cover around the DB25 end that connects to the Velodyne to more easily fit). 2. If you want to use a USB connection instead of the serial port, you will need a serial to USB converter (available from Velodyne Sports). If you use the USB adapter be sure to install the supplied software driver. While it has not been tested yet, you may be able to use the USB to collect data on a Mac. 3. To capture data from the Velodyne, you will also need a terminal emulator program (Hyperterminal for example). Connect the Velodyne to a PC COM port. Configure the terminal program for 9600, 8 bit, no parity, 1 stop bit and select the COM port you used to connect the Velodyne, for a direct connection. If you use USB, this part should be automatic. Start the call. 4. On the Velodyne, go to Set Up and select Select Data Transmission Time and enter a number between 1 and 255 (seconds). This is the interval that the Velodyne will capture data over. Select Exercise Mode/Constant Grade on the Velodyne. To test the connection, press Reset Values, after which a text header should appear on the terminal screen. When you press Start, data will be sent at the interval you specified in Set Up. Data capture also works in the Race modes. 5. Once you have data transferring, select Capture Text in the terminal program. Hyperterminal, for example, will then prompt you for a file name and then will start logging all data as it arrives. When you finish your workout, select Capture Text/Stop to save the file. 6. The file you captured will look like this: TIME SPEED DIST POWER CADENCE HEART RATE GRADE CALORIES 0:00: :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: :00: This will be in a text file. You can easily open this file from Excel where you can graph and analyze the information. 7. If you have problems getting this to work, first recheck the terminal setup. Close and re-launch Hyperterminal. Verify that the Velodyne data transmission time has been set. Use Reset Values to send test data. DATA LOG 14

18 REPLACING THE MEMORY CARTRIDGE To install a different memory cartridge into the Velodyne computer head, first remove the front cover (the black plastic end with the holes in it for the cables). Newer models use a black rectangular cover. The software cartridge is installed on the left side as you face the unit. Remove the existing cartridge by gently wiggling left and right while pulling outward Replace it with the new one, taking care to make sure it is fully seated into the socket. You may have to re-enter any custom race courses and user Ids that you had previously entered. MEMORY CARTRIDGE 15
