Welcome to the new look HeadSet To make getting to your listings of rides etc easier I have decided to produce HeadSet now as a A4 size flat publication rather than a booklet. This should make it easier to get at the information you require and also easier to read. To simplify things, HeadSet is now in three sections: words of wisdom from various members of the Committee, news of various cycling activities and finally, listings of our forthcoming rides. You will find separate listings for Easy Rides/Sunday Rides, Tuesday Evening Rides and finally, Wednesday Rides. A good idea would be to print them out to attach to a notice board! Happy Cycling! 3 Chairmans Chat It has been a time of sadness, with the passing, last November, of our former Chairman, John Radford. John is greatly missed not only by our section, but by many cyclists throughout the country. I would like to welcome the new committee members voted in at the AGM, thank you for volunteering. The major change at the AGM was the resignation of Ken Roberts as our secretary. Ken has been our secretary for many years, where he took on many jobs not part of his principal role, these jobs have now been assumed by committee members. Thanks go to Peter Charnley for taking on the daunting job of secretary, it is a steep learning curve for us all At the Christmas ride Ken was presented with a Certificate of Merit from the CTC. The presentation evening was enjoyed by all who attended, the numbers attending were reduced this year, in part, I think, because it clashed with a group holiday to Portugal, a lesson for next year. The Summer rides this year include a memorial ride in tribute to John Radford, which we hope will be supported by all. Safe cycling to you all. Robin Stevens

Secretary s Report Spring 2015 I took up the position of Secretary at the Annual General Meeting in October last year after Ken Roberts retired from the Committee after serving for an extraordinary 12 years. Ken, as many will remember did all manner of jobs for the Club such as organising social events, the annual cycling trip away, rides listings and rides leader and many more. Fortunately Ken is staying on as a rides leader and other members of the committee are sharing the load that Ken carried alone. In October 2014 the Government published the draft Cycling Delivery Plan. A consultation exercise was then undertaken by the Department of Transport. The final plan is now awaited. Many in the Cycling World were disappointed that specific funds were not allocated to the Plan. There will be matched funding available for Councils that submit plans that are approved. The overall aim of the Plan is to double the number of cycle journeys by This is a very modest increase. The All Party Parliamentary Group (local MP Jason McCartney is Deputy Chairman) recommended a target of 10% of all journeys by Currently less than 1% of all journeys are by cycle. This plan will not have us all using cycles on the scale of the Netherlands or Denmark anytime soon but it is an important step in the right direction and we need to encourage and support local developments that will lead to more cycle usage. A good example of recent progress is the 245,000 of funding that Kirklees Council has received to support the build of the missing cycle link between Brighouse and the Leeds Road Corridor of Huddersfield. This link will help encourage cycle commuting and increase the number of journeys undertaken by cycle. John Lewis, CTC Right to Ride representative for Huddersfield and District will be following progress closely. Tour de Yorkshire I still see lots of yellow bikes chained to posts all over the Tour de France route. It was an incredible advertisement for Cycling in Yorkshire. The legacy of the Tour de France is now being built on and perhaps the yellow bikes will get another lick of paint and be moved to the new route of the Tour de Yorkshire. This 3 day event starts in Bridlington on 1 May and ends in Wakefield on 3 May travelling through Scapegoat Hill, Marsden, New Mill and Holmfirth. It is fantastic that Yorkshire has seized the opportunity of following on from the success of the Yorkshire stage of the Tour De France. Well the winter season is now almost over and we all look forward to a good summer s riding whatever the weather. So pump up your tyres, lubricate your chain and get on your bike with Huddersfield and District CTC. This year Steve Hall has already arranged a tour in the Peak District based at Hartington Hall Youth Hostel between April 16 and 18. This is now fully booked and I am hoping for someone to drop out so I can join the Group! Steve has also offered to assist members who would like to book on the Semaine Federal event in the South of France between 1 and 10 August. On the 2nd August we are planning a memorial ride in the name of John Radford our former Chairman and CTC Councillor who died on 5th November 2014 after being knocked off his bike by a motorist in July Details will follow shortly. Website Makeover Is there anyone out there with website development skills? Even very rudimentary ones would be warmly welcomed by the committee. Rides Programme As I write this we have a few rides in the programme that need rides leaders. If you can lead a ride please contact Mick Haigh, our rides coordinator. My Journey from Chap Riding a Bike to MAMIL* This cycling lark was so simple once. I would put on a pair of trainers with a harder sole, tuck my trousers into my socks and set off. When I started to go on rides led by Huddersfield and District CTC in 2013 I had only just got clipless pedals. My British Eagle bike was 531 steel with downtube shifters, Brooks saddle and

a baggy Carradice saddle bag. Two years later I have got a titanium framed bike with STI gear levers (what does STI stand for?) a saddle that is a little sleeker and a neat rack pack. Only last week I got myself a rechargeable headlight too. Encouraged by the Tints on Wednesday rides I now browse and invariably buy the Aldi and Lidl cycling bargains. Much of it bought because it is so cheap. I therefore have various cheap tools in the garage bought because the saddle pack they came in was worth more than twice the price without the tools. Anyone else got Aldi tyre levers that seem to be as useful at taking tyres off as sticks of liquorice? Lycra was a step that I promised myself that I would not take. However I did buy a pair of winter cycling trousers made from Lycra this year from Aldi at a price that could not be resisted. At the other end of the price range we have Rapha clothing. Currently I have three items of Rapha clothing consisting of a cap, winter socks and neck warmer. Luckily they were presents and I have no idea of the likely eye watering cost of these items. The next step in my journey is I think the big one and I am some way off it at present Lycra bib shorts. But if it meant I could then keep up with the likes of Joe Naylor maybe I should get down to Aldi to buy some or put them on my birthday wish list, Rapha of course! I will them be a proper MAMIL and the journey will no doubt continue onward to buying more gear that the Cycling magazines suggest are essential. Will it stop Mick Haigh from overtaking me on his Raleigh 3 Speed? Somehow I doubt it. *MAMIL Middle aged man in Lycra. Used to describe those finding or returning to cycling in later years From the Archive When Ken retired as secretary he took the files of the previous minutes from his loft and passed them to me for me to put in my loft when I took up the role. I could not resist taking a look at them. The records only start on 12 September I wonder what happened to the minutes of the previous 70 + years? From 1963 to 1975 the minutes were hand written and recorded in a book Although 1963 does not seem so long ago for some of us, it is more than 50 years ago. The Beatles were taking the World by storm, the Great Train Robbery took place., President Kennedy was assassinated, the Profumo affair was a huge political scandal and the coldest Winter (62-63)to this day was recorded. Here are three items from the minutes of the meeting Huddersfield Section of the CTC of 12 September 1963 : Apologies were sent to the Mid Yorkshire Section of the CTC for the non-appearance of this section s representatives at the last District Association Meeting. This was due to Coach trip arranged on the same day. Mr Walker had received a visit from Miss Cromack who wished to return a tea set bought by the Section for her parents Mr and Mrs Cromack on the occasion of their silver wedding some years ago. After a short debate it was decided that since the couple are both now deceased the gift should be accepted back and be left in the keeping of Mr and Mrs Walker for the time being. So where is the tea set now I wonder? Mr Cole, HCA (Huddersfield Cycling Association) representative visited the HCA rooms for a meeting but no one was there. It is not known why. Peter Charnley, Secretary

Right to Ride Rep To begin with, I ought to introduce myself to those who haven't come across me yet. I took on the CTC Right to Ride for Kirklees role just before Christmas when Peter Charnley became Huddersfield CTC's new secretary. The development of safe road infrastructure for everyday cycling activities such as commuting and shopping is not of particular interest to every CTC member but for a number of reasons it is beginning to make economic sense to government. One can expect that over the next decade - despite financial austerity - money will be available to develop cycling infrastructure in our towns and cities along the lines we have seen happening in London. The first sign of this, is the awarding of money to from the DFT to Kirklees, as part of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Bid. The approved bid will: 1. Make the "missing link" from Bradley/Birkby greenway to Brighouse via Leeds Road and Cooper Bridge. 2. Upgrade the canal path from Golcar to Huddersfield Town Centre. 3. Make cycle routes within Huddersfield Town Centre. (This was already planned as part of the "Town Plan" but was presumably incorporated into the bid to make up the match funding required by the DFT). This makes a lot of work and infrastructure for Kirklees Highways and Planning. On the basis of previously installed infrastructure some serious consultation and suggestions to the council will be needed if the infrastructure is to be fit for purpose, rather than planners just choosing the easiest and cheapest option. As an example of what I mean by this, I am in a long-running process of trying to change and improve a Kirklees plan of a cycle crossing of the Huddersfield Ring Road. This is at Trinity Street and uses the pedestrian underpass. It is my view that this proposal will not be used by cyclists, and that there are better and more practical alternatives to this plan. It is however, not a straightforward matter in trying to get this point across to Kirklees Highway planners. At the Cycle Kirklees Forum in February I made a case for the need of a specialised group to focus solely on cycling infrastructure and to develop safe routes for Kirklees cyclists. This group has now met twice and hopefully it will be able to make positive links with the council and contribute towards developing high quality cycle infrastructure in Kirklees. John Lewis, Right to Ride Rep

Words from our Rides Co-ordinator Well here we are, winter is nearly over and spring is in the air time to get those summer bikes out (if you have one) The summer ride lists are all filled out and ready to publish. Don't forget that the Sunday rides start earlier in the summer. Alan has kindly invited us to accompany him on his Tuesday tootles. Starting and Finishing the season With a Compo's Chippy supper and lots of ups and downs in between, lets hope the weather is as kind as in previous years. We are lacking one or two leaders to volunteer for the Sunday rides, and maybe a couple of the easy rides. Speak up if you feel you can help out here,! Might be worth noting the Adddingham ride is a little later this year due to Easter clashing with the usual weekend. We are in the early stages of planning an annual ride to remember John Radford. We plan to do this each year on the closest weekend to the date of his accident. John s family will be supporting this event. That's enough from me, I am off out on my bike. See you in the saddle. Mick Haigh, Rides Co-ordinator

What s Happening at Kirklees? West Yorkshire has been awarded funding from the DfT for cycle infrastructure improvements at some railway stations across Huddersfield. In summary these will be: Dewsbury improved cycle parking under shelter with workstation; wheel ramps on stairs Huddersfield improved cycle parking under shelter with seating and cycle repair workstation; wheel ramps on stairs Mirfield & Batley improved cycle storage with improved access to platforms and better surfacing on the cobbled road approaches to the stations More information at: Lynnette Evans Project Officer Tour de France Legacy Kirklees Council - Communities & Leisure Tel: lynnette.evans@kirklees.gov.uk

Monte Gordo or Bust Bags packed check. Tickets and passports check. Let s go! Flights on time. Transfer desk where it should be. Hotel Alcazar in time for a 4 course buffet dinner much needed. JG there to greet us. So far so good. Then all down to John s Bar (no relation) for a briefing by our leader. Can t believe the cost of a beer - 1. So, here we are in Monte Gordo, a little resort town on the Portuguese Algarve, a stone s throw from the border with Spain. Beautiful beaches, lovely rolling hills a few k s back from the coast and, what s this? Blue skies, sunshine, average daily temperatures 20C and no rain albeit a couple of layers are still required first thing. Nice one John spot on for two weeks R n R from the extreme weather back in Blighty. Over a period of 4 weeks he has dovetailed 23 of us on board, steered us towards the bike hire, and planned a series of rides and walks to keep us gainfully occupied. Present on our arrival are the Ireland clan, Andrew and Kate, John and Katherine, Uncle Ken and Janet, JG himself and Graham Rhodes. Unlike last year when he and Kate were based in their mobile home on the camp site next door, Andrew has set up camp/technical support on the 7th floor and had single handedly set about checking out every supermarket within a 5k radius. Cameron and Senga were to join us in due course along with a number of others from JG s days working for Kirklees. All are in the Alcazar with us. Very cozy. The rental bikes are defined by the fact that they cost 2/3 por dia to hire. Some went for the Shopper, a little bit like yer granny might ride but, hey, they get around. The rest of us go for mountain bikes, fitted with a triple on the front to help us up the hills. With 6 gears on the back, or was it 5 I don t know, it s enough makes me work hard on the lumpy bits. The rides themselves are daily, either am or pm, depending on what else is happening, average distance 32/40k s, a combination of coastal and hill lanes with a bit of off road through pine scented woods. Over the holiday we cover and pretty much criss-cross the coastal area between the Rio Guadiana on the border with Spain and Fabrica a pretty little village to the west, and the area of hills between the A22 motorway and the N125 main coastal highway, centring on the two medieval fortresses of Castro Marim, well worth a visit in themselves. On a separate occasion we took the ferry over to Spain and had an enjoyable ride south along the Guadiana estuary and along the coast. All are conducted at a reasonable pace, long and hard enough for us to have a blow, but short enough for us to use our days for other things. My wife Heather, not a cyclist, loved walking the beaches for hours at a time, and going with her on a number of occasions I can testify that it s not necessarily an easier option. Each ride is characterised by friendly and supportive company and being CTC riders, convenient café stops where galao (milky coffee) and cakes are the order of the day if you pay more than 1.50 you need to seriously question your travel guide. I have to say John that your suggested stop where a glass of vino was 50 cents a go was probably a bit too extreme at the other end. You had to be there! Traffic was invariably light, and with our rides taking us along lanes for the most part, we pretty much had the roads to ourselves. Highlights of the trip for me:- Taking time out to go sightseeing in Vila Real on the Guadiana estuary and its Spanish counterpart Ayamonte a short ferry ride away. Both very pretty with beautiful historic plazas. On balance I felt the Portugese option has more to offer the shopper and casual diner. Letting the train take the strain and spending the morning in Tavira, a Roman town 20 or so k s west along the coast, complete with Camera Obscura and old Roman bridge. A nice change of venue complete with even more cafes and some nice shops. Next year, we ll make it to Faro. Andrew and Cameron locked in a downward spiral as to who could get the cheapest coffee and cake, receipts required thereof. At the time of going to press, Cameron was in pole position at 1.30 in a caff off the square in Vila Real. Andrew wasn t too far behind with his café break opposite the fish market, again in Vila Real. Yes, I plead guilty to paying 1.50 on the town plaza. Mock me if you will Andrew 1.30 and you get the fish market and I get the sun filled beauty of an historic plaza. Discuss! (See photo at end for final winner).

All in all, an excellent two weeks; great weather, great company, location and riding. Many thanks for all the work you put into it making it so successful John and good luck in your efforts to make it an annual thing. You re a star it says here. 11 Tour de Yorkshire As you will probably be aware a new professional bike race takes place in Yorkshire during the three days 1-3 May. The full route was unveiled in Bridlington in January by the Amaury Sport Organisation and Welcome to Yorkshire, before being joined on stage by Team Sky s Ben Swift, along with the first British man to win a stage of the Tour de France, our own Brian Robinson. STAGE ONE - BRIDLINGTON TO SCARBOROUGH, 174KM Stage One of the Tour de Yorkshire is on Friday 1 May. It starts in Bridlington and finishes 174km later in Scarborough and we ve called it a stage of sea and beauty, as it takes in the east coast of Yorkshire, starting in Bridlington and heading along the coast before moving inland, incorporating the iconic North York Moors landscape. It includes five climbs and two sprints. STAGE TWO - SELBY TO YORK, 174KM Stage two a stage of history is definitely one for the sprinters. Starting outside the historic Selby Abbey, the route is another 174km and takes in much of the Wolds, arriving in Beverley then north to Norton and finishing with a circuit in York which is sure to please the crowds. There are two climbs and two sprints and with a strong prevailing wind we should expect some fast and tactical racing on this largely flat stage. STAGE THREE - WAKEFIELD TO LEEDS, 167KM The final stage, called a stage of hills and heroes, will see the race start in Wakefield, travel south to Barnsley and then north west through Ripponden and Haworth on the way to the finish line, 167km later, at Roundhay Park in Leeds. The success of last year s Tour de France has directly influenced this stage and some of the iconic climbs, such as Cragg Vale, are included but with a twist; the riders will race in the opposite direction, riding north to discover that England s longest continual ascent in the Grand Départ, has become England s longest continual descent for the Tour de Yorkshire. In our area the route passes through Denby Dale, Holmfirth, Meltham, Marsden and Slaithwaite. More information from

Tuesday Evening rides 2015 with Huddersfield & District CTC All rides start very soon after 7pm. Distances will vary on each night and will range from 10 miles to 20 miles. The rides will last between 2-3 hours depending on the night (and any mechanicals or similar mishaps). The longer rides tend to be mid season when the evenings stay lighter longer. I always return to the starting point of each ride, to make sure everyone gets back OK. It s not the mileage that matters, as these rides tend to be very lumpy. It s being out in good company on a relaxed evening ride through some wonderful local countryside and quiet lanes. You do need to be able to ride uphill and down dales for 2-3 hours, but we maintain a steady social pace. And regroup at the top of each hill. All routes with a link as shown are as a guide only, and subject to change on the night or if anyone in the group has other suggestions. Ride leader on Tuesdays evenings will be Alan Priim. Any questions about the ride, call or text me on , or via apriim@yahoo.com Date Meeting point Destination 14th April Gynn Lane Honley (HD9 6JY) Compo s Café/Holmfirth A short but uphill ride via Netherthong and Upperthong to Compo s café for supper. And after supper make your own way home or join together for the short ride all the way back downhill to Honley. 21st April Waterloo Morrisons (HD5 8QW) Highburton We go straight out to our destination at Highburton. Climb on up to Emley passing the Three Acres restaurant. Onto Grange Moor and across to Gawthorpe and Tandem. 28th April Gynn Lane Honley (HD9 6JY) Meltham A picturesque route taking in Blackmoorfoot reservoir and Meltham, onto the greenway and back around and down to Honley. 5th May Paddock Head (HD1 4RB) Bolster Moor A cracking route going up to Bolster Moor and (if it s a good evening) onto Bradshaw and then dropping down to Manchester Road above Slaithwaite for the ride back to Paddock. 12th May Junction Inn (HD1 4LA) Scapegoat Hill Another lumpy ride taking in Longwood Edge on the way to Outlane and Scapegoat Hill. Looking all the way down and across Huddersfield and then back and down via Golcar

19th May Somerset Bridge/Huddersfield (HD5 9AD) Clifton (Ford) Taking the Bradley and Calder Valley Greenways. Onto Clifton and it s ford (which I deny ever falling into) and back via the industrial backdrops of Brighouse. Still a pleasant evenings ride tho. 26th May Trycycling Kirkburton (HD8 0NX) Cannon Hall One of my own local (to me anyway) favourite rides. Lots of countryside dropping right down to Cannon Hall. Then climbing all the way back via High Hoyland, Clayton West (with a bit of track suitable for a road bike) and Emley. 2nd Jun Fartown Bar(HD2 2QA) Sunny Vale Be aware it always rains on the way to Sunny Vale. Riding over the top to Brighouse and thru to the other side to find Sunny Vale. Then climbing above Shibden Hall onto Southowram and back through another side of Brighouse. 9th June Paddock Head (HD1 4RB) Scammonden/Buckstones Yet another favourite of mine. A longer ride onto Bolster Moor and Golcar Lily. Via Pole Moor and over the very high motorway bridge to Scammonden reservoir. Long drag up to Buckstone Moss and then a long, long flowing descent all the way back to Huddersfield makes it all worthwhile. I hope the sun shines this year. 16th June Cambridge Rd Car Park/Huddersfield (HD1 5BX) Ravensthorpe Subway National Bike Week (13th-21st June) event This is the best ride to invite any reluctant cyclists to join us. The flattest ride of the season via the greenways and onto Ravensthorpe subway via the park. Time for a bite at the Subway and then back the way we came. No Route as it is a mystery tour on the greenways. 23rd June Gynn Lane Honley (HD9 6JY) Gunthwaite Another one of my favourite rides. Lots of up and downs on narrow country lanes. Climb up to Farnley Tyas, onto Fulstones, taking in Snowgate Head, Inchbirchworth reservoir and onto Gunthwaite Hall. Back via Denby Dale and down via New Mill. Please note route below does not start from Honley. 30th June Gynn Lane Honley (HD9 6JY) Royds Moor Windmills Another Honley start. Going out towards Brockholes but then up to Wooldale. Taking in Little Cake (the road, not a bakers), climbing onto Hade Edge. And up and on to Royds Moor and the viewing platform by the Windmills. Then all the way back down via New Mill to Honley.

7th July Gynn Lane Honley (HD9 6JY) Holme Moss Not just Holme Moss, but the mountain climb included in that Tour De France in Yorkshire, just 12 months ago. The strong group go to the top and carry on down and round t other side. The rest of us stop at the top, take in the views and then enjoy the ride back downhill to Honley. and 14th July Somerset Bridge/Huddersfield (HJD5 9AD) Fulstone A very much uphill start, climbing out via Fanny Moor Lane and onto and around Castle Hill. Onto Farnley Tyas and via Storthes Hall onto Thurstonland. Around onto Fulstones. Down into New Mill and then good flowing roads all the way back to Huddersfield. 21st July Fartown Bar (HD2 2QA) Stainland My favourite place names and another route I enjoy. Up to Ainley Top and then down the stairs (really). Onto Elland and then Stainland. Back via Outlane dropping back to find Fartown again. 28th July Waterloo Morrisons(HD5 8QW) Northorpe One of the less lumpy rides taking in Kirkheaton, Hopton, Mirfield and through Nowheresthorpe (as it s called by some) and back via Robertown and Cooper Bridge. Much more pleasant than it might sound. 4th August Deep Lane (was Warren House Pub) Milnsbridge(HD4 5SJ) to Honley A favourite start straight up the long steep climb of Deep Lane. Via Blackmoorfoot reservoir and Meltham and then another steep climb to get over to Honley, and back to Milnsbridge. Lumpier than it sounds. 11th August Gynn Lane Honley (HD9 6JY) Digley Dam Same start as the ride to Compo s via Netherthong and Upperthong. But then going via Wilshaw and nearly Meltham. Across and down to Digley Dam and up to Holme. And another relaxing ride down to Honley making it all worthwhile. 18th August Somerset Bridge Huddersfield (HD5 9AD) Farnley Tyas A route skirting Farnley Tyas, taking in Kirkburton, on the way to Thurstonland before winding into Farnley Tyas. A cracking fast descent (take care) before taking a left turn over Almondbury and back to Huddersfield. 25th August Paddock Head (HD1 4RB) Merry Dale Along to Milnsbridge and the climbing into Wellhouses and onto the aptly named Hill Top. From here to the lovely Merry Dale and down a steep descent and narrow lanes to Milnsbridge. Then back to Paddock.

1st September Waterloo Morrisons (HD5 8QW) Emley Moor A lumpy route going via Tandem and Gawthorpe, around to Grange Moor and Emley Mast. The way back depends on the night, but will be a mainly downhill ride back to Waterloo. 8th September Gynn Lane Honley (HD9 6JY) Compo's cafe The last ride of the season. Same as the first ride and another supper stop to mark the end of the season. A short but uphill ride via Netherthong and Upperthong to Compo s café for supper. And after supper make your own way home or join back on for the short ride all the way back down to Honley. See you all in 2016, Alan Priim!
