1 ROAD SAFETY PROBLEMS IN BANGLADESH; DIMENSION & CONSEQUENCES OBJECTIVES by Accident Research Institute (ARI) BANGLADESH UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY (BUET) Dhaka-1000 Presented by To make an impression on road safety problem from local perspective. To identify the different aspects of major consequences and countermeasures of road accidents Kazi Md. Shifun newaz Assistant Professor, ARI, BUET Road Traffic Accident Definition A Traffic Accident occurs when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or other stationary obstruction, such as a tree or utility pole. Traffic collisions may result in injury, death, vehicle damage, and property damage. Road traffic accidents have been recognized as one of those adverse elements which contribute to the suffocation of economic growth in the developing countries Road Accident: Bangladesh context (ARI database based on police report form) Year Crash Casualty Crash Casualty
2 Road Accident: Bangladesh context Roads are killing machines that take more than 4,000 lives every year yet we are silent Crash(ARI) Casualty(ARI) Crash(BRTA) Casualty(BRTA) There was little noise and movement after any accident and most of the case those accidents related with some national figure. But the differing public reactions must be understood to be utilized for the greater good. Road Accident: Bangladesh context Bangladesh government has taken many initiatives in order to reduce the number of accident occurrence through several modes of campaign. Unfortunately, from years to years the number keeps increasing. Our concern for road safety We have lost some of our heroes Shah Alam (1990) ace sprinter, who won gold medal twice as South Asia s fastest man, died in a road accident in May 29, Manjarul Islam (2007) Young Test cricketer was killed in a road accident on March 16, 2007, Mahbub Alam (2010) Former Bangladesh fastest man gold medallist in 200- metre sprint in the 7th SAF Games in Madras in 1995, died in a road accident on December 4, Firoz Hossain Pakhi (2012) SA Games gold medallist died in a fatal road accident 2

5 Characteristics of Accidents in Bangladesh About 70% of road accident fatalities occurred in rural areas Nearly 50% occurred on national and regional highways. Many fatalities and injuries occur in a single accident, up to 60 deaths and 150 injuries on the spot. Accidents are highly clustered, nearly 50% of accidents on less than 5% of the highway network. Predominant accident types are: o Hit pedestrian- (45%) o Rear end (16.5%), o head on (13.2%) and o Loss control/overturning (9.3%). 5
