3 Chair s Foreword I am delighted and proud to introduce Sport Islington s Annual Report and Accounts. During 2010/11 Sport Islington had a productive year continuing its role of supporting the development of sport and physical activity for all the Borough s residents. This report highlights some of the achievements over the last year. We have strengthened and further developed our partnerships to achieve our key aims of: Providing financial support for sport and physical activity programmes in Islington that contribute to wider initiatives including community cohesion and health, as well as individual sporting excellence Increasing the physical activity levels of Islington residents Securing further funding to develop greater sporting opportunities in Islington Expanding the number of Club Administrative Officials attending training workshops Boosting the number of Community Sport Clubs gaining Clubmark status Promoting the accomplishments of the voluntary community sport sector Engaging with Local and Regional partners to ensure the voice of community sport is heard The importance of well structured and delivered sport and physical activity can bring many benefits to Islingtonians lives. Improved personal health and fitness, social cohesion and community creation, as well as being fun and enjoyable in its own right. Over the last year the Committee of volunteers has strived to make Sport Islington accessible to all in the Borough, creating thematic rounds to attract new groups to apply for funding. Introducing School - Club grants, to bridge the gap between the two institutions. Hosting the first annual awards ceremony to celebrate local individual and club triumphs, as well as continuing our partnership with the Joanna Brown Trust. Targets moving forward towards London 2012 are to gain charitable status and increase our membership and reach within Islington. I would like to register my thanks for the great efforts of the Committee, all Islington Community Sport Club volunteers and our 300 online members, who do such a sterling job week after week to provide fantastic opportunities to learn, enjoy and improve in sport and physical activity. We are in our second year of a joint grant initiative with the Joanna Brown Trust. The Joanna Brown Trust was set up in the memory of a local Islington resident who tragically past away in Joanna was an extremely keen sportswoman who lived life to the full and took full advantage of all of the sporting opportunities available in Islington. In 2010 the Lucky recipient of the 2000 Joint award was George Durden. George s original application to the Sport Islington grant fund was shortlisted for it s quality and George s dedication to the sport of Canoe Slalom. The Joanna Brown Trust picked George as the 2nd recipient of our joint grant award and he will be using this funding to support him during a crucial year in his development. The Joanna Brown Trust have been generous enough to continue to support our 2009 Joint Award recipient Aasha Kimpton. The Joanna Brown Trust were so captivated by the ability of the young Gymnast from Holloway that they are continuing to help her to strive toward Olympic glory. The Joanna Brown Trust is delighted to be working in partnership with Sport Islington to provide talented young athletes from the local area with support. As a charity our aim is to encourage involvement in sport and provide people with an opportunity to experience and excel in sport. Thanks to the partnership we have with Sport Islington we are able to identify talented young athletes and provide them with the support they need to go on and be the best they can be. 5 2010/11 Achievements and Updates Themed Funding rounds launched Awards Ceremony Sport Islington have been busy over the last year. Our first ever awards ceremony was held at the Town Hall in July, where we celebrated the best of Islington Community Sport. School Club link pack launched Sport Islington, in conjunction with Islington School Sports Partnership, launched the School Club Link Pack, which encourages community sports clubs and schools to become more cohesive in the Borough. The pack also comes with the advantage of additional funding for those clubs that sign up to it. For more information, visit Sport Islington have been working on targeted funding rounds to encourage applications from under represented groups in the borough. The Sport Islington Committee have focussed these rounds on Disabled Sports Activities, Older Peoples Activities, Estate Based Sports Projects and Sports Projects for Women & Girls. The Themed funding rounds are open until September 2011, with applicants eligible to apply for up to 1500 in each round. For more information, visit our website Supporting Badminton in Islington Sport Islington were asked by Badminton England to help support the emerging Community Badminton Network in Islington. The network identified a number of interventions that would benefit community badminton in Islington and put these interventions into action. Coaching courses were delivered and new junior programmes were put on in conjunction with the Sport Unlimited programme. 6 Financial Review April 2010 April 2011 Actual Opening Balance in Community Account 12, Funding received 25, Grant Expenditure 19, Other Expenditure 5, Surplus/Deficit + 13, Maximising the use of our resources Sport Islington maintain an operational surplus at the beginning of each financial year (April), this is due to the final years grant payments leaving the account in May of each year. Sport Islington received 21, from Islington Council to administer a comprehensive grants programme. Sport Islington received 2, from Badminton England to support the work of the Islington Community Badminton Network. Sport Islington received 1, from the Joanna Brown trust for our Joint 2, award. 2011/12 our goals Grow our membership We currently have over 300 online members on our Sport Islington website and a committee of 10. We will look to increase both of these by 20% in the coming year. Increase participation in community sport in Islington We will continue to fund community sports activities across the borough, we will endeavour to fund a wide range of sports activities, targeting a wide range of audiences. Support the future stars in Islington We are committed to increasing the funding that we offer to talented athletes in Islington, with partnerships like our current joint award with the Joanna Brown Trust we will continue to offer increased support to our stars of tomorrow. Signposting and advocacy Sport Islington will be offering our members and our website users the opportunity to use a new web directory, that will list local sports clubs and activities across the borough. Sport Islington are also committed to putting the concerns of the voluntary sports community to the people who make decisions in Islington, we will be implementing a contact sheet on our website, where concerns can be voiced and we can put those concerns to the appropriate authority. Charitable status We are committed to achieving Charitable Trust Status and will focus on this as a priority in 2011/12.
