What are the Travel Costs.to Society?

What are the Travel Costs to Society? Air quality: urban air pollution is dominated by transport emissions, the health burden to Leeds alone is estimated at 100 million. Environmental Noise: road transport accounts for 90% of background noise in England. Source: Leeds City Council

What are the Travel Costs to Society? Driving Stress: Traffic Stress Syndrome (TSS) has been identified in up to 29% of drivers. Symptons include: increased heart rate, headaches, dizziness, nausea, stomach cramps.(source: YouGov 2005) Road Safety: there are still approximately 250,000 road traffic casualties and fatalities per year in the UK. PACTS estimate that the lifetime risk of being injured in a road traffic crash is between 1 in 2 and 1 in 3. (Source: BMA Board of Science 2009)

What are the Travel Costs.... to the Employer?

What are the Travel Costs to the Employer? Lost efficiency of the labour force whilst they try to find a car park space The costs of business travel Car Parking and its management Dealing with your neighbours

What are the Travel Costs to the Employer Car Parks: can cost up to 500/space per year to maintain and administer and up to 800 per space to build. The Economy: congestion costs the economy 7.5billion per annum, worth over 260million in lost GDP. Business Travel: a 5% reduction in travel time for all business travel on roads could generate approximate savings of 2.5bn. Source: Eddington Report 2006

Travel Plans What are the benefits of a Travel Plan and how to get started?

Benefits of a Travel Plan Implementing a Travel Plan can: Alleviate demand for car parking Reduce the costs of business travel Reduce congestion and improve air quality Contribute to employee health and well being Enhance your social and environmental reputation Can aid with planning permission obligations Increase the efficiency of your employees

Developing a Plan: 4 steps Step 1: Assess your site Identify Issues: overcrowded car parking/congestion/parking in side streets/ employee complaints/shift working Identify Opportunities: nearness to PT links/ accessibility to walking and cycling/site facilities such as lockers, showers & cycle stands/flexible working. Step 2: Ask your employees Run a travel survey to find out how they are travelling, what alternatives would they consider, what are the business travel needs? This will provide modal split for your organisation.

Developing a Plan: 4 steps Step 3: Quick Wins Identify the quick wins and sustainable modes most likely to reduce car drivers. What is needed to enable that change in behaviour?

Developing a Plan Step 4: Influencing Employees Travel Behaviour Inform & educate on the benefits of change Save money on fuel, reducing stress, health and well being, reduced carbon footprint Remove temptation Review business travel policy, car parking management Encourage positive behaviour Public transport information, corporate ticketing schemes, locker and shower facilities, cycle to work scheme, car share spaces,

Developing a Plan Tools and Case Studies The Journey to Work Business Travel Health and Well Being

Develop a Plan: the Journey to Work Case Study Leeds Trinity University College Issues Insufficient campus car parking leading to roadside parking & issues with neighbours Feedback from travel survey: sparse and costly public transport Lack of sustainable alternatives Travel Plan Objectives To identify and promote the use of more sustainable modes of transport to staff, students and visitors. To effectively manage the on-campus parking facilities and use them to generate funding for sustainable initiatives. To use the plan to support future estate development and planning

Develop a Plan: the Journey to Work Actions Revised Car Parking policy- introduced permits and charges Agreed with local Rugby Club access to develop an overflow car park Funding of a shuttle bus service Upgrade of cycle changing facilities Promotion with WYTPN of sustainable travel modes Results Reduction in car alone mode from 80% in 2008 to 46% in 2011 Reduction in travel to work CO2 emissions of 19.7% between : 580,700kgCO2 Improved cycle to work initiatives: bike to work scheme/student bike hire/secure storage 2007: awarded Highly Commended National University Green Gown Competition 2009: awarded planning permission to build 200 bed new halls of residence

Develop a plan: Ticketing Schemes Benefits to the employer: Alleviates demand for car parking Valuable employee benefit Tickets can be used for business travel Benefits to the employee Cheaper travel to work, makes their salary go further No need to find the correct money each day Can be used for work and leisure Annual schemes can protect the employee against cost increases Schemes Corporate Annual MetroCard, additional 15% discount to TPN members Northern Rail Corporate Scheme: 52 weeks for price of 40 and pay monthly First & Arriva Monthly, Annual and Corporate schemes

Develop a Plan: Business Travel Tools to reduce the costs of Business Travel Video Conferencing Business Travel Policy Greener Driving Business Cycle Allowance Car Clubs Review Business Mileage Allowance Pool MetroCard

Develop a Plan: Business Travel Greener Driving 1. 40minute one to one lessons with a trained instructor (8 lessons/day) 2. Lessons can be free to employers with high business mileage drivers and are network members. Case study: Calderdale Council 10 fleet drivers underwent the greener driving lessons and their mpg was monitored 3 months before and 3 months after the lessons. Increases in mpg ranged from -3% to 18% averaging at 8.3% after 3 months. If rolled across the fleet this could save the council over 93,000 per annum in fuel costs.

Develop a Plan: Business Travel Pool MetroCard Transferable ticket between employees Value for money: 92% cheaper than business mileage allowance and 83% cheaper than standard rail fares Valid on all bus and train travel in West Yorkshire Leeds City College: introduced for day travel between sites in Leeds and Keighley resulting in cheaper business travel costs and quicker journey times.

Develop a Plan: Business Travel Supporting Mechanisms Assess which employees genuinely need to drive for business Implement a Business Travel Policy with a sustainable travel hierarchy Review the mileage allowance (introduce cycle allowance) Provide the tools: car club, pool car, video conferencing, public transport information and tickets

Develop a Plan: Health and Well Being Incorporating exercise into the daily journey to work has excellent health benefits: Moderate physical activity including walking and cycling to work can protect against: obesity, diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and mental illness. 66% of men and 75% of women do not meet the minimum of moderate activity level of 30minutes 5 times per week, this is estimated to cost the UK economy 10.7billion per annum.(source: BMA 2009) Various studies have indicated that employees who cycle to work are less likely to take sick leave saving at least 1 day per year.

Develop a Plan: Health and Well Being The advantages of promoting walking and cycling to work are: Walking in particular is the cheapest and most greenest way to travel It helps employees incorporate exercise into their daily routine: 1 mile = approx.15-20mins Opportunity for employees to find a cheaper way to work, even if just in warmer weather. It can be incorporated into other sustainable modes such as walk to the bus stop, train station Car users could benefit by parking in cheaper car parks further out of town and walking in. How to get started Invest in a small number of showers and lockers Informing and encouraging - competitions Lunch time events Promote local walks Consider cycle to work scheme and cycle mileage allowance

Summary Travel costs: Our Environment Our Society Our Health Our Business Travel Plans: can help reduce these costs can be very simple to implement
