1 SYLLABUS Course: PE 400-Introduction to Bodybuilding Instructor: Jennifer Christianson Office: Building A, Room 345 Office Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 10 am-12 pm Tuesday, Thursday: 3-5 pm Or by appointment (I prefer s to voic s. I check my once in the morning, then once in the evening to ensure I respond to any messages between hours.) jchristianson1061@mysvc.skagit.edu Phone: (555) Objective: to educate students about the sport, the different divisions, proper training regiments, nutrition programs, beauty and hygiene, the relevance of rest/recovery/sleep, and acknowledging risks. Equipment: a current gym membership (to create and practice your own workout, keep track of current measurements and goal measurements at the end of the semester) or home workout equipment; running/cross training shoes; access to a nutritionist who is willing to expend free advice for a personal nutrition plan for his/her specific needs/goals/individual tolerance and/or experience.

2 Make-Up Quiz Policy: Since this is an online class, there will be NO make up quizzes/exams for this course. Please manage your time wisely, and if an extreme emergency arises, there MAY be compromises. Required Textbook: Since this is an online class, there is NO required text book. However, I will be posting links under each week class is under way, and it is your responsibility to read, familiarize yourself, and keep these resources for future quizzes/papers/or the final exam. Tentative Schedule: Week 1: Bodybuilding Divisions: Heavyweight, Middle weight, Light weight, Novice, Open Men/Women body building; Open Figure for Women; Open Fitness for Women; Masters Bikini; Open Bikini; Men s Physique. Week 2: Exercise Regiments of Bodybuilding, Men s Physique, Figure, Fitness, and Bikini; Discussion Board #1 Due. Week 3: Comparing and Contrasting the different workout/diet programs of each division. (Paper #1: Pick 2 different divisions: example Figure versus Bikini; and compare and contrast the training/nutrition/contest prep each competitor would go through.) Week 4: Comparing and Contrasting the different workout/diet programs of each division CONTINUTED. Quiz 1 DUE: Exercise Regiments of the Divisions (multiple choice and short answer); Discussion Board #2 Due. Week 5: Beauty and Hygiene: Learning each division s proper beauty/maintenance/health care rituals to ensure a hydrated skin tone, healthy teeth, strong hair and nails, and overall well being. Comparing and Contrasting a male to a female s wellness ritual.

3 Week 6: The Importance of Shredding Water weight, and Carb depleting/loading during Contest Season; Paper #1 Due! (Paper #2: Research Paper on a fitness/competitor celebrity who YOU aspire to train like, or even admire.) Week 7: Why People Think it s cool to say they live on 4-5 hours of sleep/night, and how to REVERSE the mindset: learning the relevance of recovery days/getting adequate, deep sleep at night to ensure promising physical and mental performance. Week 8: Learning the risks of pursuing any division of bodybuilding: Quiz 2 DUE: Nutrition in Women s Bikini and Men s physique (multiple choice and short answer) Week 9: Symptoms of Overtraining/Burnout/Extreme Dieting, and how to avoid it; Discussion Board #3 Due. Week 10: Paper #2 DUE; Final Exam-(cumulative material, short answer, 1 essay) Discussion Board: -Discussion Forums will be posted on Sunday night at 11:55 pm, and will be due the following Sunday night NO LATER than 11:55 pm. -You must write a personal forum responding to the forum for the appropriate week; and leave at least 3 comments on student forums. -Responses must be AT LEAST 7 sentences long. They need to be grammatically correct, show critical thinking, and academic understanding pertaining to the subject. Discussion Board #1: Before participating in this class, what DID you know about bodybuilding? Did you know about bikini/men s physique, or was it stereotyped on larger athlete s? What do

4 you hope to learn by the time this class is over? Do you think you would want to train for a competition; and if so, which division and why? Discussion Board #2: Find a local nutritionist who is willing to talk to you in regards to this class, who could give you a sample pre-contest program which fits your individual body needs, and explain why he/she gave this particular plan to you. Do you believe a diet can be cookie cut to fit anybody s body, or should diets be exclusive and constantly monitored on a weekly basis, so the individual can get the maximum benefit of the diet and have changes made which is determined by his/her metabolism, personal tolerance, body fat percentage, motivation, and time frame? Discussion Board #3: What does overtraining mean to YOU? Have you personally experienced overtraining, or paranoia on missing a workout session? Have you felt that it was dominating your life to where other things like family, school and other extracurricular activities were put on hold so you can train? Do you think it s better to work out SMARTER or HARDER? Compare the training schedule of a marathon runner versus a bodybuilding competitor. Who does more cardio? Who eats more carbs and drinks more water? What supplements and vitamins would each athlete take? Who gets more rest days? Who lifts more weights? Is one better than the other, and why do you think so? Quizzes: Quizzes are open ONE WEEK BEFORE THEY ARE DUE as noted under the syllabus. You will have 3 attempts. The highest score will be your final grade. Each quiz is not timed. Paper #1 and Paper #2:

5 Each paper should be at least 2 pages in length and in MLA format. Each paper is also required to have 4 reliable citations. Resources: Look up athlete s routines, anecdotes, training, personal tips to get a feel for how they perform on and off stage. A great how to online source. Videos, articles, an online store, and bodyspace community is available in one mega site dedicated to bodybuilding. Pro athlete s give free information/tips/samples on training, pre-and post contest diets and training. Learning nutrition material from the free online resource Energy, Diet, and Weight.
