3 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 3 SESSION 1: SYNOPSIS AND CHARACTERS Activity 1: Synopsis Before you read the synopsis of the play, match the words to the correct definition. He believes that all people have two distinctive personalities one good, and one. He has created a chemical formula that makes the brain completely separate these two personalities so that they can be controlled and analysed. He decides to test the formula on himself, and the events that follow are quite. The Dr Jekyll suddenly transforms into his evil, Mr Hyde. Throughout the play, he changes continuously between Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. He lives two different lives one as Dr Jekyll, the kind and caring doctor who everyone knows, and the other as Mr Hyde, a malicious and violent threat to the people around him. However, nobody, not even Dr Jekyll s housekeeper,, or his, know that he is in fact also the evil Mr Hyde. When they eventually find out, what will happen? Will Dr Jekyll be trapped in the same body as the evil Mr Hyde forever?
4 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 4 SESSION 1: SYNOPSIS AND CHARACTERS Activity 2: The Characters You already know about Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, but who are the other characters in the play? Read the character list below to find out. DR. HENRY JEKYLL: who becomes Mr Edward Hyde DR. UTTERSON: Dr. Jekyll s best friend CELESTINE: Dr. Utterson s niece CHARLOTTE: Maid HILDA: Housekeeper A cabaret singer. Hyde s girlfriend The following sentences give information about the different characters. Write questions using the sentences as the answers. The information you need to ask for is highlighted in bold. Use question the words - who, what, why, when, where, how, how many The first example has been done for you. 1. Dr Jekyll injected himself with the formula because he wanted to do experiment. 2. Dr Jekyll did his experiment in his laboratory. 3. I didn t mean nothing Look at the sentence below. The word ain t is a slang word which is sometimes used in negative sentences. Can you write the sentence again in formal English, using another word in place of ain t? CHARLOTTE: I ain t never been taught anything. Look at the sentence below. Write it again in its negative form. We ve met before, haven t we?
7 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 7 SESSION 2: UNDERSTANDING THE PLAY Activity 1: I Have To Analyse What Is Happening To Me Listen to the song, I Have To Analyse What Is Happening To Me (Track ). Then underline all the words which rhyme in each verse. Use a different colour for each group (there should be 3 groups). I have to analyse what is happening to me. Everything I see, how will it be? I have to analyse how the world will be through different eyes. How will it be? I see the light as never before. It s a warming light and I feel so right. It s beautiful and strange, it s completely new. It s like the hard rain dancing overhead and into the light!

11 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 11 SESSION 2: UNDERSTANDING THE PLAY Activity 3: Dr Jekyll / Mr Hyde ays! The following lines from the play are examples of orders or instructions: HILDA (TO CHARLOTTE): MR. HYDE (TO ROXANNE): ROXANNE (TO MR HYDE) ROXANNE (TO MR HYDE): MR. HYDE (DR JEKYLL): Go, go quickly! Hurry up! Stop it! Come on! Do it! Answer my question! Shut up! As a class, play a game of Mr Jekyll / Mr Hyde says! Take turns to be Mr Jekyll / Mr Hyde and give orders to rest the of your class mates. You must only follow the orders from Dr Jekyll. If you follow the orders from Mr Hyde, you are out of the game. Here is an example of how the game works Dr Jekyll says take a deep breath! (everyone takes a deep breath) Dr Jekyll says give yourself an injection! (everyone gives themselves an injection) Dr Jekyll says stop! (everyone stops giving themselves an injection) Mr Hyde says touch the veins on your arms! (if anyone touches the veins on their arms they are out) The game continues
12 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 12 SESSION 2: THE ENDING Activity 1: Reporting an Event What Happened? Read the following extract from scene (Track ) where Dr. Utterson questions Charlotte about what she witnessed in Dr. Jekyll s laboratory: HILDA: UTTERSON: Charlotte, please come here! (Charlotte enters.) Dr. Utterson would like to ask you some questions. What happened the other night? CHARLOTTE: On Monday? UTTERSON: After my niece and I left hat happened? CHARLOTTE: Nothing, Sir. Oh, do you mean about the lamp, Sir? Yes, I got into trouble because of the lamp. Is what you meant, Sir? UTTERSON: No, not that. I mean after everyone retired to bed. What happened? CHARLOTTE: After that? Nothing, Sir. UTTERSON: HILDA: UTTERSON: HILDA: You said you would tell me the truth, you know. She is afraid, Sir She has nothing to fear if she tells the truth. You must tell him, Charlotte. CHARLOTTE: I wanted to say thank you to Dr Jekyll. I thought he was alone, but then suddenly he started screaming Go away, go away! I was afraid, so I went down to see if I could help UTTERSON: Go on... CHARLOTTE: (Becoming more scared.) I came in, but it was dark. The doctor was in the corner calling for help. I got closer but it wasn t him. It was horrible. Horrible eyes! I don t remember much else except that look; and those eyes. UTTERSON: Incredible, it doesn t make sense. There is something wrong here.
13 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 13 SESSION 3: THE ENDING Now, imagine that you are a reporter for a newspaper. Use the following sentences from the extract to write a newspaper report of the events. Think of a name for your newspaper and write it on the top line. HILDA TO CHARLOTTE: Dr. Utterson would like to ask you some questions. DR UTTERSON TO CHARLOTTE: What happened the other night? CHARLOTTE TO DR UTTERSON: Nothing, Sir. HILDA TO CHARLOTTE: You must tell him, Charlotte. CHARLOTTE TO DR UTTERSON: I wanted to say thank you to Dr Jekyll. I thought he was alone, but then suddenly he started screaming. CHARLOTTE TO DR UTTERSON: The doctor was in the corner calling for help. I got closer but it wasn t him. I don t remember much else except that look; and those eyes. The introduction and first line have been done for you: There were some strange happenings at Dr Jekyll s house on Monday evening (Possible answer other variations may be accepted) Hilda said to Charlotte that Dr Utterson would like to ask her some questions. Dr Utterson asked Charlotte what had happened the other night, but Charlotte said that nothing had happened. Hilda said to Charlotte that she must tell Dr Utterson. Charlotte said that she had wanted to say thank you to Dr Jekyll and that she had thought he was alone, but then suddenly he had started screaming. She said that the doctor had been in the corner, calling for help but when she got closer, it wasn t him. She said she didn t remember much else except that look and those eyes.
14 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 14 SESSION 3: THE ENDING Activity 2: I Watch the Rain Listen to this song from the end of the play (Track 18). Celestine and Roxanne are singing about the pain and heartache they feel because of their relationships with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. While you are listening, draw the emotions or actions expressed in the lyrics. Then explain your drawings to the rest of the class. CELESTINE: I watch the rain through the window. I see my tears running down. CELESTINE: I think of him, how we were... I watch the sky through his eye and I can hear it breathe a sign... I think of him, I remember... CELESTINE: CELESTINE: By looking in his eyes, will I see the past? By looking in his eyes, will I see beyond tomorrow? Is it true or false... Nightmare or reality? CELESTINE / Remember. CELESTINE: When I saw him my heart stopped When I saw him my heart began to beat CELESTINE: Love lives...in his eyes CELESTINE / Remember him, remember him, I would live in his eyes. CELESTINE: I felt so warm......in his arms
15 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 15 SESSION 3: THE ENDING Activity 3: What appens ext? After you read the following extract from the end of the play (Track 20), discuss what you think happens next. Use these structures to express possibility Mr Hyde may / might / could It is possible that Perhaps I knew it, I knew it I knew you were here somewhere, and I knew what you were up to. How on earth.? You gave me the keys. I ve been honest with you. For the first time in my life I wanted I wanted you, Edward Hyde, I would have done anything for you! But you went away, you left me! I knew I shouldn t have trusted you, and now I hate you. Do you hear? I hate you! It s not nice to hate a person. (Enter Hilda.) I don t hate you. I love you, but there is a great big hole in my heart and it s filled with hate. Hit me, isn t that what you do to people? Stop it! Kill me if you want! Stop it! Aren t you brave enough to kill a lady? Come on! Do it! (Hyde picks a knife from the laboratory table.)
16 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 16 AAfter SESSION 4 : Express Yourself Activity 1: What Did You Think? Now that you have seen the play, let s talk about the experience. 17 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 17 AAfter SESSION 4 : Express Yourself Activity 2 : Write Your Own Review! Imagine you are a journalist for your local newspaper. You need to write a review of the play giving your opinion about the following The plot The actors The script The costumes The scenery The music Below is the opening paragraph of the review. Continue with your own thoughts and ideas. Last night was the premiere of the classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Although the play is a well-known work, the audience was very eager to see a different interpretation of the story by a new theatre company
18 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 18 AAfter SESSION 4 : Express Yourself Activity 3: Your Turn! As a class, read the ending of the play again (Track 23). Now, in groups, pretend you are the writers of the play and invent your own ending. Act your new endings for your classmates. (The laboratory is dark; Hyde is curled up on the other side of the room with his back towards the door.) UTTERSON: (Roxanne goes toward Hyde...) CELESTINE: UTTERSON: UTTERSON: CELESTINE: They will never catch Edward Hyde everything has gone as planned, and now Jekyll will not bother me again Who s there? Who are you? Where is Dr. Jekyll? What have you done to him? Dr. Jekyll no longer exists. He is gone forever. I am Edward Hyde. Edward? Is it you, Edward? I have been looking for you for weeks. Where have you been? Go away! Go away! But Leave me alone! (Hyde turns his back to them.) Darling it s all over we can now... (Hyde turns around, dagger in hand, and stabs Roxanne in the chest. Roxanne falls dead to the ground.) Oh! Oh! Oh my god! You you you murdered Hilda and now this poor girl. She loved you! It is not my nature to love anyone. Now, I will have to kill you too it is not my fault, I simply cannot leave any witnesses to our crimes Our crimes? What do you mean? You and who else? Ha Ha Ha! Your friend, Dr. Jekyll and I made a good team! You and Dr. Jekyll. are the same person? Then if you are Henry are you going to kill me too? Are you? (Hyde, mad with anger, charges at Celestine with the dagger raised high in the air. Utterson comes between them, is stabbed and dies.) CELESTINE: Oh my God!!!! You ve killed you ve. (She runs towards the door but, at that moment, Hyde turns back into Jekyll.)
19 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 19 AAfter SESSION 4 : Express Yourself DR. JEKYLL: Celestine! Forgive me please, forgive me! I can t take this anymore please help me, end my life, I can t take this torment kill me, please! (Celestine recognises Jekyll s voice and turns around. She hesitates.) CELESTINE: DR. JEKYLL: Henry. (On his knees.) Please, set me free. If you love me, kill me I m sorry for everything I ve done to you (Celestine is touched by Dr. Jekyll s pleas and helps him to his feet. They come together in a warm embrace. While they re still holding each other, Hyde takes over Jekyll s body once again. Before she notices he has changed, he takes the dagger and cuts her head off. Celestine s body drops to the floor, covered in blood.) (A moment later, Dr. Jekyll is back. He surveys the dead bodies.) DR. JEKYLL: (Blackout.) Oh dear God Celestine! Utterson!! What have I done? Who am I? What sort of devil is inside me to have caught me in a trap and choose to let me go free? There is nowhere I can turn to, there is no way I can go on (Taking the dagger lying on the floor beside him, he drives it into his own chest.)
