DAISYCOOIL.COM 24 JANUARY Summary Daisy Cooil, Canoe Slalom Athlete Gazette Sports Awards Runner up for junior sports person of the year - 2nd year running. First time paddling internationally! what a year? For starters over summer I paddled abroad for the first time and after a 20 hour drive through France, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Hungary we ended up in Bratislava, Slovakia where I spent 10 days of quality training with a race in the middle. This was an ECA junior cup race and it was my first race abroad. I was racing in both kayak and canoe and I made the final after every run!! I came 5th in K1 and 6th in C1 which I was extremely proud of!! BRITISH OPEN ENTS PAN CELTIC CUP The British Open 2016 was my best result to date! Selected for the England National Talent Squad for a 2nd year. Represented England in the Pan Celtic Cup for the 3rd year running. 1 Highest ranked woman in North of England Ranked 17th in GB in kayak & 10th in canoe. Richmond Christmas Lights Asked by the Duck Club to switch on the Richmond Christmas Lights.
Then, on our way back home after meeting a fellow canoeist from America, Sage Donnelly, in Bratislava we stopped off at České Budějovice, Czech Republic for the ECA final. After racing in both boats again and making the final after every run I ended up coming 4th overall in K1 and 3rd overall in C1!!! This was very unexpected and I didn't actually know I'd won a bronze medal until they called my name out and I stood on the podium. 2
C1...and in K1!!! This was a huge surprise and I was extremely happy with this result. It almost didn't matter how I did from now on as the worst I could come was 10th in each boat. Again I raced the same and just had fun...this also seemed to work as I came 8th in both boats in the finals!!! This is probably my best result yet! British Open - Lee Valley London 2012 Olympic venue Biggest UK race of the year and my best result to date! In September it was the British Open...the biggest race of the season!! There were 2 heats runs in each class on the Saturday where approx. the top half went through to the Semi Finals on the Sunday. Then in the Semis, the top 10 of each class went through to the finals the following afternoon. I was hoping to get through to the semis as I was up against some very tough competition such as Fiona Pennie who has been to 2 Olympics including Rio last year, Lizzie Neave who represented us at London 2012 and the top senior and U23 women such as Mallory Franklin, Kim Woods, Eilidh Gibson and Jazz Royle. I made the semi finals after the first heats runs in both K1 and C1 which I was very pleased with. My plan hadn't changed between heats and semis. I planned to race the same as normal and just treat it as a normal race run. This seemed to work as I made it into the finals in The only unfunded athlete to make both the canoe & kayak finals QUALIFIED FOR 2017 GB SENIOR TEAM SELECTION RACE After an amazing result at a premier race in Nottingham in May where I made the final in C1, I came 5th overall which was an amazing achievement. We didn't realise at the time but a few weeks later we discovered that I had made Senior Selection. This meant I had been allowed an entry into the Senior GB Team Selection race for This will be happening the same weekend as Junior Selection in April This was very much unexpected but was absolutely amazing!!! 3
Gazette Sports Awards Junior Sports Person of the Year Runner up for 2nd year running! This year was full of amazing achievements not just on the water but also off. I was nominated and then shortlisted for the second year running for the Gazette Sports Awards 2016 in the Junior Sports Person of the year category. This was really exciting!! In October at the awards night I was sat on a table with fellow athlete Davey Todd a super bike racer and his family and I was honoured to have met Matt Crossen, a GB and England footballer who represented GB at the Rio 2016 Paralympics!!! It was an amazing night! Northern Echo Local Heroes Awards 2016 I was there. My category was sponsored by Darlington Building society and I got a personalised goodie bag - very thoughtful. I was up against some tough competition including Amy Tinkler, the 17 year old British Gymnast who competed at the Rio 2016 Olympics and won a bronze medal. Junior Sporting Excellence category Then a few weeks later I was also nominated and shortlisted for the Northern Echo Local Heroes Awards 2016 in the Junior Sporting Excellence category. This was held at the amazing Wynyard Hall in the grand marquee. The gardens were stunning, covered in beautiful Christmas lights - it was in December after all. It was a fantastic night and I met Matt again when 4
Cardiff Premier Race One a my new favourite venues! In May we went to Wales, Cardiff to be precise. It was my first time at the course in Cardiff. I'd heard rumours that it wasn't very good but I loved it!!! I spent 2 days there training with my Welsh friends before the race. The race was on a bank holiday Monday and there were heats, semis and a super final all in one day. I got into the semis and then the super final! This was one of my first times racing with this format and I loved it...despite my last runs being at about 6 o'clock...and we still had the drive home to do!! This was one of my best results yet as I came 8th in K1 and 3rd in C1!!!! REPRESENTED ENGLAND FOR THE 3RD YEAR RUNNING - PAN CELTIC CUP For the 3rd year running I've represented England in the Pan Celtic Cup. This is a series of races throughout the year where England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete with the best paddlers of their nation to see which is the best of the home nations. England won again this year! Highest ranked for my age!...and highest ranked of any age in the North of England! I finished the year ranked 17th in the premier division in Kayak and 10th in the premier division in Canoe. This meant I was the top Junior 16 woman in the country and the top woman in the North of England in kayak, and in canoe I was the second top junior 16 woman and also the top woman in the North of England. Also, I have been selected for the England National Talent Squad (ENTS) for the second year running. 5
Switching on the Richmond Christmas Lights!...for the Duck Club To finish off the year, in December I was asked by the Duck Club to turn on Richmond's Christmas Lights. Despite how daunting this sounds and how nervous I was it was an honour and I was helped through it amazingly by the Duck Club members and I ended up really enjoying it...even with the rain. Thanks!...to all my supporters I'd like to thank everyone who has helped and supported me and I honestly wouldn't be where I am without everyone's support. Hope you all had a good new year. I'm very much looking forward to 2017!! It was a fantastic experience! DAISYCOOIL.COM 6 24 JANUARY 2017
