1 AHOY, MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATORS! An exciting educational opportunity for your school to win $$$ for computer equipment! The 12th Annual R E G A T T A Students will use multi-disciplinary knowledge to build and race a boat made with Meadow Gold and/or Viva brand milk cartons. Your school team could win a treasure trove of prizes! Open to grades 6 (middle school) to 12. Saturday, May 3, :30 am NEW RULES!
2 Ahoy Educators, Get your teams ready for the 12 th Annual Meadow Gold Milk Carton Regatta on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park. The program is going to be bigger and better than ever, and new activities are sure to make waves! The concept of the Regatta is simple: students create boats using Meadow Gold and/or Viva brand half-gallon milk cartons. The Regatta Program encourages students to use science, math, and industrial arts applications to design, test and construct their boat, while also fostering leadership, responsibility, teamwork, creativity and motivation. The event provides students with a fun-filled day of camaraderie, school pride, and a sense of accomplishment. The Regatta offers a Middle School Division and High School Division. In each division, two teams will race per heat to complete the course in the fastest possible time. The races will test the design, construction and aquatic skills of the student boat builders. The top five teams in each division will be awarded trophies and prizes. Divisional winners of the Most Creative Boat and Most School Spirit competitions will also receive prize packages. The Regatta also features a Health & Environment Workshop and Display Presentation Competition. These activities provide teams with the opportunity to earn points that are translated into seconds that are deducted from their overall race time. The teachers will have a chance to flex their muscles in the Teachers Race with the victorious teacher winning a Meadow Gold ice cream party for his or her class. In addition, we will once again host the Media Race, featuring local news personalities paddling student boats. The upcoming Regatta will now be a part of a larger Meadow Gold Milk Carton Regatta & Kids Triathlon event. Due to the rising rate of obesity among Hawai i s children, we are offering this day-long event to instill the importance of physical activity, nutrition, and health to our keiki and their families. The event will also feature a Health & Wellness Fair and other activities. Since 1996, the Meadow Gold Milk Carton Regatta Program has combined the importance of academics, physical fitness and nutrition for hundreds of students as part of our commitment to supporting our community through health, education and nutrition initiatives. So pick up your paddles, put on sunscreen, and join us for the 12 th Annual Meadow Gold Milk Carton Regatta. We hope to see you there! Moohalo, Joni Marcello Assistant Sales & Distribution Manager
3 THE REGATTA CHALLENGE 1. Design and build a boat using Meadow Gold and/or Viva brand half-gallon milk cartons that two students will paddle in the calm waters off Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park. 2. There will be two races one for Middle School teams and another for High School teams. On Saturday, May 3, Middle School teams will compete in a 75- to 100-meter course. High School teams will compete in a 100- and 125-meter course (depending on the day s weather). The course will be in a controlled area secured by lifeguards from the City & County of Honolulu Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division. (See page 12 for a sketch of the race course.) 3. The Health & Environment Workshop will teach students about the importance of keeping Hawai i s ocean waters clean and how to conduct water quality testing. It will also feature a physical agility course. Following the workshop, teams will take a quiz on the information learned. The workshop is mandatory. 4. The Display Presentation Exhibit will feature text and image displays of the steps taken by the various teams to complete their boats. The displays will explain each phase of the process, from research and design to the final finished product. It will also explain or demonstrate related scientific principles and any apparatus, techniques, designs or applications. The display will be based on fact-finding through design, building and testing of the boat, or data gathered through observation and/or research. This is a mandatory activity. There will be a 15-second penalty if displays are not completed. NEW!
