1 Mentor Public Schools The Cornerstone of the Community The Beacon Lighting the way for tomorrow s leaders October 26, 2018 Dear Sterling Morton Families, A Message from the Principal Over the last few years, Mentor Schools has collected data from students, staff, and parents through the BrightBytes Survey. This survey is to guide our next steps in keeping students safe in a web-based world. In the most recent data collected, it was revealed that 74% of our teaching staff spent 3 hours or less per year teaching about creating an online presence. Recognizing this deficit, Mentor staff participated in Digital Citizenship training back in August, which gave them access to curriculum to teach internet safety, the dangers of cyberbullying, and the often-unrecognized consequences of a digital footprint. These 5 lessons will be spread out throughout the school year. Those parents who are signed up through PTA to volunteer, will be free to go to the classrooms at 2:10 PM to set up, after checking in. Students should not come to school in costume. They will have 5 minutes to change into their costumes prior to the parade (see attached for costume, parade, and treat guidelines). The parade will begin at 2:20 PM, and weather permitting, our students will march along the sidewalk. If you are not signed up, but would like to see your child in the parade, feel free to line the sidewalk out front! See the attached Costume Guidelines and Halloween Parade Information in this Beacon. Thank you to all who volunteered at the PTA Spooktacular Carnival! What a fun night! This would not have been such a fabulous night without all of you, your cakes, and your friendly faces! We eagerly are already looking forward to next year s Trunk or Treat night! Our lunch count is called in at 9:30 every morning and it is very important that we know what your child is doing for lunch. Page 1

2 Costume Guidelines Due to time constraints, all costumes must fit over student clothing. There should be no makeup or hair products while at school. We ask that you save that fun for your evening festivities! We also ask that costumes are appropriate for walking, with no masks, and length is free of entanglement and will not be stepped on by self or others! Students will not be allowed to wear masks while at school. No scary clown costumes are allowed. Toy weapons are NOT permitted in school. This includes any costumes that come with an item that could be considered a weapon, a look-a-like weapon, or a dangerous object, no matter what the age of the student. Halloween Parade Information Students will change into their costumes at 2:10 p.m. We will begin the parade at 2:20 p.m. Students will exit out the 4th/5th grade hallway doors, walk along the sidewalk and re-enter through the front doors. Parents are welcome to park in the parking lot and view the parade from outside around the sidewalk! We ask that parents spread around the sidewalk so the students have people watching them throughout the parade! If the weather is inclement, then the parade will be cancelled. Class Party Food Guidelines/Enforcement Bottled water is the only beverage to be served, along with a maximum of two food treats (at least one healthy food item should be considered). All treats need to be individually prepackaged and factory sealed, with the ingredient label visible on the individual/original packaging (no homemade treats permitted). Foods containing the 8 most common allergens are not permitted as treats (peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish). 17 Ceramics Night Hosted by Sterling Morton PTA Please join us on Friday, November 9th at 6:00 pm for Ceramics Night at Sterling Morton. This is a fun event for the whole family! Items available for painting will range from $6.00-$12.00 per item. Light cords with light bulbs are also available (if needed) at an additional $5.00 per cord. All paint and brushes are provided.
