2 PAGE 2 WHITTIER VOLUME 10, ISSUE 6 Getting Outside for some Winter Fun Sledding Safety (Info Adapted from Nationwide Children s Website) Choose the Right Sledding Hill Look for a hill that s not too steep and one that doesn t end near a street, parking lot, ponds, trees, fences, or other hazards. It should have a long flat area at the bottom for your kids to glide to a stop. Make sure the hill is free of obstacles such as jumps, bumps, rocks, or trees before your kids begin sledding. Choose hills that are snowy rather than icy. If a child falls off a sled, icy slopes make for hard landings. Always try to have your kids sled during the daytime, when visibility is better. Dress for Cold Temperatures Prevent Frostbite Hypothermia Kids should wear winter clothing hats, gloves or mittens, snow pants, winter jacket, snow boots that is waterproof and warm, and change into something dry if their clothes get wet. Don t let kids wear scarves or any clothing that can get caught in a sled and pose a risk of strangulation. Make your kids wear helmets, particularly if they re 12 or under. There is no such thing as a sledding helmet, so choose a helmet designed for high-speed impact. Ski helmets work best, but if you don t have one, make sure they at least wear a bike helmet or something similar. Get the Right Kind of Sled The best sleds can be steered by their riders and have brakes to slow them down. Avoid sleds that can t be steered, such as saucers or plastic toboggans, and never use a sled substitute like an inner tube, lunch tray, or cardboard box. Good sleds are relatively cheap to buy and are well worth the extra money. Some Simple Safety Rules Your kids have the right kind of sled and helmets, they re dressed warmly, and you ve picked out a perfect hill for them to sled down. They re ready to go. There are still a few rules they need to follow, though, to keep themselves and other sledders safe: Be sure a responsible adult is present to supervise. In the event someone does get injured, there should always be an adult on hand to administer first aid and, if necessary, take the injured sledder to the emergency room. How To Find Out If Your Child s Bus Is Running Late? Transportation Late Busses: Occasionally school busses have had to complete a double run at the end of the day. In these instances, a bus will complete its regular schedule and return to Whittier for children scheduled to ride a particular bus. This means that your child will wait under supervision of the principal and other staff. If you think your child s bus is running late, the fastest and easiest way to check on a bus is to check the district website at Click on transportation. You can also check by calling transportation at

4 Hello Whittier Families! A MESSAGE FROM THE WHITTIER PTA PRESIDENT It is hard to believe that 2011 is here. I don t care WHAT I learned in my school science class I truly believe that time is speeding up as I get older If you remember in my last newsletter posting, I mentioned that we had a First Vice President position open. Well...no longer! I would like to welcome Cyndy Stout to our board. Cyndy and her family just moved to Westerville this year from North Carolina. She has two daughters at the school a Kindergartner and a 3rd Grader is currently a volunteer in Ms. Louden s class, and is eager to get more involved in the PTA. A quote from her to me: I care very much about my girls school and the other kids that are a part of their everyday lives. I think we as parents have to be involved to help shoulder the load that we expect of our teachers and the other staff members. Thank you, Cindy, for taking the step to be more involved with our students, teachers, and parents!!! One of Cyndy s main roles will be to coordinate volunteers to PTA events so please watch for some future communications on this subject. In the meantime, if you have an interest in volunteering but don t yet know what you can do or what help is needed, please contact her at cyndy@stoutfamily.me. PTA Website the PTA has a link on the Whittier Elementary page on the School District site. Go to and select Whittier Elementary. On the right hand navigation pane, select PTA. Navigate the My Pages sites to see information on specific committees or go to the Whittier PTA link under My Classrooms to find other information and PTA Forms. Whittier Yahoo! Groups this is our mechanism to send out quick reminders on PTA and school events. If you are not already a member of this group, please send an to our website coordinator, Sean Curran, at sean_p_curran@yahoo.com to request access. Lastly, our next PTA meeting will be held on Thursday January 20th at 7:00 pm in the Kindergarten room. As always, childcare is provided free of charge. Please mark this date on your calendar and come to see what the PTA is doing to help our school. I hope everyone enjoys some well-deserved time off with family and friends over this holiday season. See you in the New Year! Sincerely, Claire Curran Whittier Elementary PTA President

5 Whittier s Composting Project The Whittier Composting Project is under way! With funds secured from a Westerville Education Foundation Grant and the support of Jeff Bracken of Westerville North High School, Whittier students and staff have begun to collect food scraps and yard waste in our composting bin. This project will generate a wealth of learning opportunities for grades K-5. We will study not only the science of composting but the benefits this process provides and discuss the natural link to our service learning initiative. We are very excited to continue our exploration of all of the opportunities this project presents our students, staff and community. Whittier Terracycling: Important Lessons to be Learned We began collecting during our lunch periods on November 8th and just six weeks later 4,957 juice pouches and approximately 1400 Ziploc baggies have been diverted from the landfill and will be upcycled! When we upcycle our trash is turned into cool new products like backpacks, pencil pouches and purses. Students learn some BIG lessons with terracyling: What is here on planet earth is here for good. We call this the 1st Law: Gravity (the natural force that keeps things near the Earth s surface. It keeps all the materials here. In light of this and in order to keep life going, Nature cycles the materials it produces again and again over time each time finding a use for the different stages the materials go through in the cycle, and each time contributing something to the ecosystems upon which our health and our lives depend. Examples of natural life cycles of materials produced by Nature include: rock cycles, water cycle, tree, leaves and plant cycles and food cycles Even the materials produced by people will not go away. Eventually all materials fall apart as they move through the different stages in the materials cycle but in products made by people (unless they were designed and made to move through the natural materials cycle like food and paper) they will start falling apart in places they can t be useful. That will be harmful to our health and to the health of the animals, the water, the air and the soil in which we grow our food and in which trees and plants grow. So it makes more sense to keep the materials humans have produced and used from making this mess by composting what can back to Nature and by mimicking Nature and by creating our own materials cycle for the rest. This is Upcycling or Terracycling: Materials that can t go into the natural materials cycle, can be cycled around and around in our own technocycle rather than going into the landfill. Doing this we are contributing to the health of the ecosystems that all depend on us, upon which we all depend, and for which we are all responsible. Keep saving those drink pouches and baggies at lunch or home and turn them in to our collection bins in the cafeteria. And one more bonus to this project is that we earn money for our school from this project $.02 for every bag of juice pouch collected! WAY TO GO WHITTIER...SERVICE LEARNING IN ACTION!
