1 The Director s Saddle Would you believe it is April already? If the rest of the year continues as this first part has, I think the next thing I will be writing to you about is Christmas. I am hoping we have had all the rain-outs we are going to have this year. That was not fun having to cancel the rides for you. April, here we go. The first ride for April should prove to be a memorable one. All I can tell you is that it is a Road Captains choice, and we will be leaving at 8:00 am, and from Red Rock Harley-Davidson. The rest, we will find out when we get to the Road Captains briefing that day. This is the Road Captains opportunity to take us on a nice long ride. Be prepared for anything. This month is also the Nevada State H.O.G. rally in Pahrump. If you are able, please volunteer. We have the volunteer form on the back page of the newsletter. I know Sandy Backus will appreciate your support. We will also have a Chapter ride to the State Rally on Saturday, the 17th. On the 18th is the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Fallen Heroes ride. This will kick off at 8:00 am at Red Rock Harley-Davidson. This will be a large event helping the families of fallen officers to attend the annual Fallen Heroes Memorial in the Nation's Capitol. The annual ride by the Chapter to the Laughlin River run will be on April 24th. The leave time will be at 8:00 am heading to CalNevAri. Please remember, this is a one-way Chapter ride. Once you are scanned at the stop in CalNevAri, you are on your own to ride the remaining way to Laughlin and help relieve the vendors of their wares. Make sure you spend time to see what there is new this year in the way of bling for your bike. S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # S.N.H.O.G. 2 Director s Saddle...continued Did you know you should be able to buy a heat vest at the River Run? In the upcoming months, you might find that this was a great thing to have bought there. For the ride to the Laughlin River Run, you are asked to not wear your colors; leave your Chapter vest at home or in your saddle bags. The New Member ride is the last Sunday of the month. The New Member ride is geared toward showing the new members our group riding style, but all members are encouraged to attend and are more than welcome. In fact, these tend to be our better attended rides. As we ride our way through the remainder of the year, remember to collect your ride stars. At each ride we will be handing out blue stars. See Jon's article in the newsletter on how you can get the Red and White ones. Just a few more rides to go for my next Red one! Also, when you sign in for rides, make sure you get a ticket and put your name on the back. We will be drawing these tickets at the next General Membership Meeting for Dealer Poker Chips. On the 27th, we will again hold a mid-week ride. This will leave at 10:00 am from LVHD. We will be holding these throughout the year on either a Tuesday, Wednesday, or a Thursday. Our first mid-week ride had 25 bikes, and 27 participants. I don't know where the ride will be headed this month, but I am sure it will be another great one. I heard one comment about the mid-week ride - that it was such a great and relaxing relief in the middle of the week. These are Road-Captain led, and points will be awarded for these rides also. Have a favorite lunch haunt? Let the Road Captains know for these rides. May will also be a great riding month for us. The LOH ride for this month will be up to Zion. The overnighter is set for the Memorial Day weekend. We will be heading up the Owens Valley to Carson City. The Road Captains will also be putting together a Safety Day. The Chapter Board of Directors have met and worked the calendar for the remainder of the year. When we meet at this year's Christmas party, I am sure we will be talking about the fantastic rides we have been on throughout the year. As I review the calendar, I think there is only a few rides which I have been on before! Wow, are we are one of the luckiest chapters in the country? We can head any direction during any month and have a great ride. I think back when I was a member of a HOG Chapter in the Chicago area. In April, we might have be able to get our bikes out for a ride as they had been in storage since November. But, it sure would be cold. Here, in April, we are thinking if should we use SPF 20 or 40. This Chapter would be nothing without the volunteers who make it run. But, we can always use your help. There is always room for more Ambassadors. If you want to help at the meetings, events or support the members during the rides, then this is for you. The Road Captains could also use your help. This team continually ensures the Chapter gets down the road safely. If you have good riding skills, time in the saddle, and have taken the Advanced Riders Skills Course, then consider applying to be a Road Captain. Become a part of a group of Road Captains who are among the best in the country. Come to the meetings! Come to the events! Come out to the rides! Matt Hamm The roads are endless, let s go!! 6 March Mid-Week Lunch Ride By Lana Childers This month we had our first mid-week ride. It was a semi-cold morning on Thursday and not knowing what the day might bring or how many members to expect, we began to arrive at the 9am. To our Delight, we had twenty-two men and five ladies show up at Red Rock Harley-Davidson for this mid-week ride. The ride was lead by Assistant Lead Road Captain Jim Larson, and me (Assistant director Lana Childers). We also had just the right amount of Road Captains to accomplish safety and get us down the road. Our kick stands were up and we headed up Sahara Avenue towards Red Rock Canyon, at 10 am. After passing the familiar canyon, we turned right on Blue Diamond Road heading over the hump to Pahrump. As we approached the top of the hump, we had a chance to see the snow from the last fall up close and personal. It was also very cold; but, on descending the other side of the hump, it warmed up and the rest of the day was terrific. We had clear skies, no wind, just the lovely sun blessing our day. It was great to see faces that don t usually have an opportunity to join us on weekends out on the ride during the week. We all had a great day returning back to the dealership at 3 PM. It was such a nice ride, we will be having one every month and I hope that when the next mid-week ride comes up, you have the time off work, to come join us for a light-hearted easy ride. Get to know your Chapter members and have a very pleasant day! P A G E 6

7 STARS, STARS and more STARS By Jon Dostal In September of last year, I assisted in making sure all riders signed in and passed out a star pin to all participants. Several individuals asked these questions: What is the significance of the star? When do I receive a star? How do I collect all the different color stars?. So, I wrote this article and it was published in the October Newsletter. And now, with so many more new members, our Director thought it was again time to re-cap the purpose of these colorful stars to all. 1. The significance of the star is to recognize the number of rides in which individuals have participated. 2. The stars are passed out on new member rides and on special events. 3. There are three color stars - BLUE, RED and WHITE, in that order. 4. In order to receive the top WHITE STAR, one must participate in new member rides/special events and follow the process outlined below: You will receive a BLUE STAR on your first ride (new member/special event). Collect 5 BLUE stars and turn them all back in and get your first RED star. Repeat this process 5 times (Turn in 5 BLUE stars for a RED one). When you have collected 5 RED stars, turn them all back in and receive the WHITE star. Remember to participate! Get your STARS and be recognized for your participation in the Chapter. Your Treasurer, Jon Dostal Make Your Miles Count The HOG Mileage Program is beautiful in its simplicity you ride, and we ll reward you. We ll even give you a pin and patch for just signing up (registration is FREE). After that, additional pins, patches and motorcycle medallions will be awarded at various intervals. Your first reward comes at just 1,000 miles (1,610km). Of course, there are some rules you ll have to follow: Only active HOG members (full, life, associates and associate life) may participate. If you have more than one Harley, you have to enroll each one, and only the mileage after you enroll will count towards your award. You may participate as a rider, a passenger or both just make sure you fill out a form for each. And, your Enrollment Form (available at the Chapter meetings) and award submissions must be officially endorsed by an Authorized Harley Davidson Dealership. However, it is still your responsibility to submit them once they are endorsed. So, what are you waiting for? Get enrolled in the program, enjoy riding with the Chapter, and reap the rewards for putting enjoyable miles on your Harley. P A G E 7

8 From the Road Captains... By Ken Walker For those of you I have not met me yet, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ken Walker, one of your Road Captains. I joined SNHOG in 2005 and have been a Road Captain since I was a Primary Officer and Road Captain with my former Chapter South Bay HOG in Harbor City, CA (LA). If you follow this Column, you know that our primary focus is making our Chapter rides as safe and enjoyable as we can. There are many things that come under the umbrella of safety, and speaking of umbrellas, I hope that you stayed dry in February and March. In addition to the topics covered in this Column, the Chapter conducts Safety Day training periodically throughout the year. As you know, we had a Safety Day scheduled for the 7 th of March which was cancelled due to rain. We will reschedule the Safety Day and I hope that you take the opportunity to participate. Hopefully we will again, later this year, have Offices form the training cadre from Metro s Motor Officer Division provide hands on training which is both valuable and enjoyable. Continued on next page P A G E 8

9 From the Road Captains continued The Execute is where the rubber meets the road. Trying to recall your Riders Edge and Experienced Riders courses, (you have taken the Experienced Riders Course haven t you?), in an emergency is not the best way to keep the shiny side up! Hands-on training is an opportunity to learn and practice skills that may be the difference between an accident and a close call. Two of those skills most likely to help you avoid an accident are swerving and emergency braking. Learning these skills and then practicing them can make the difference between another great day on your Harley and something you probably don t want to think about. A word of caution, combining these two maneuvers can be dangerous. Your Harley brakes best when it is upright (chrome sliding along the road doesn t slow you down) and pointed straight ahead. Swerve and then brake or brake and then swerve! There are a number of good on-line resources for Motorcycle Safety: There are also numerous books on the subject, such as: Proficient Motorcycling and More Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough. I plan on buying Maximum Control by Pat Hahn, which talks about mastering your heavyweight bike. If we take the time to learn or refresh our skills and practice the critical skills, we will all be better prepared to ride safe and have fun! Our calendar is full and the best weather of 2010 is, or soon will be, here! We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the upcoming rides! Ken Walker Road Captain P A G E 9
