1 Greendale Public Library 2016 Summer Program Guide Youth, Teen, and Adult Programs June 13 August 5 Please join us for a summer of fun at the Greendale Public Library! The theme this year, On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!, emphasizes exercising your mind. This brochure explains the shows and programs that we will offer this year. Summer Reading begins Monday, June 13 th, star ng at 10 A.M. The Greendale Public Library Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Greendale Public Library Founda on Broad Street, Greendale, WI (414)
2 Wonderful Wednesdays Family Friendly Performances Located in the Gazebo across the street from the library. Get there early and bring a blanket to sit on. Children age 3 and under must sit with an adult. Performances last about 45 minutes. In case of bad weather, the performances will be in the Community Room, downstairs at the library. Wednesday, June 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Entertainer Steve Girman Juggler Steve Girman mixes juggling, music and storytelling into an entertaining, engaging, and (most importantly!) fun performance. Wednesday, June 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Ko-Thi Dance Company The Ko-Thi Dance Company is a Wisconsin treasure! Ko-Thi combines tradi onal African-American and Caribbean dance and drumming. The ensemble performers have been cap va ng audiences for over forty years! Wednesday, June 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Betsy Ross Character Performance by Kathleen Mohr* Betsy Ross is the seamstress given credit for the making of the first American flag. Through crea ve drama cs Betsy will recall a me when our country was new and learning to stand up for its freedom. The program focuses on the brave deeds of men and women during the American Revolu on. * This performance will be held in the Community Room, downstairs at the library, not at the Gazebo. Wednesday, July 10 a.m. & 2 p.m.: Yo-Yo Extraordinaire Marc Hayward World Yo-yo Champion Marc Hayward has appeared on the David Le erman Show, America s Got Talent, and the NBC News. An exci ng performance!
3 More Wonderful Wednesday Performances Wednesday, July 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Circus Boy Circus Boy blends his comedic skills with lots of audience par cipa on while performing circus an cs, which include riding a tanium unicycle, balancing on a ladder while juggling with his mouth, and, according to Ripley s Believe It or Not, riding the world s smallest bike. Wednesday July 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Naturalist David Stokes David Stokes, a Wisconsin Associa on for Environmental Educa on Teacher of the Year, uses live creatures and animal ar facts, songs, and short stories to make learning fun. Wednesday, August 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: Pint Sized Polka Finish out our series of Wonderful Wednesday performances with the polka music of Mike Schneider. The audience will get up and move to the happiest music on the face of the earth. Spectacular Saturdays Performances Saturday, June 10:30, Community Room: Balloon Sculp ng with Jason Love See some amazing balloon sculptures! Also, families will have the opportunity to learn how to make a few simple balloon crea ons! Saturday, July 10 a.m., Community Room: Ms. Kim s Amazing Animal Show Come to an interac ve animal show! Ms. Kim will bring in a variety of live furry animals, insects, and rep les.
4 Kick-Off Day! Stop by on Monday, June 13th, to register for the reading program and get a preview of the fun events that will take place throughout the summer. Make a cra from 10 a.m. un l 2 p.m., while supplies last. Olympic Day Stop by the youth area any me from 8 to 11 a.m. on Friday, July 15th to par cipate in Olympic-inspired ac vi es including mock Olympic events, friendly compe ons, and cra s. It s the Summer Olympics at the Greendale Library! Family Story me Miss Kathy s Story me: Mondays, June 20, July 11, August 8, 22, 9:30-10 a.m., Community Room. Come for a half hour of fun with professional storyteller Kathy Luck. Stories, flannel board ac vi es, songs, and ac on rhymes are all part of this charming story me. No registra on is required. Pajama Story me with the Girl Scouts: June 30, 6:30 p.m., Community Room. The theme will be Bubbly, Bubbly Bath me. Greendale s own Girl Scout Troop #1662 will present a fun one hour story me with songs, rhymes, bubbles, and a snack. Hands-on bubble fun for the kids! Wear your pajamas! Drop In Events at the Greendale Library Family Bingo Have some ol fashioned fun with this classic game! Light refreshments will be served. Tuesdays, June 21, July 12, 19, 26, August 2, 9:30-10:30 a.m., in the youth area. Lego Club Open Lego play for children up to age 12. (Parents must remain with children under 6 years of age.) Saturdays, June 25, July 16, August 6, 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Wednesdays, July 27, August 17, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Community Room. Space is limited to 25 children. Arrive early to secure a spot! Library Skills Family Scavenger Hunt Learn (or review) library skills in a fun atmosphere! Younger children will learn how to use the card catalog, find books, and get to know the library and its valuable learning resources. Culmina ng ac vity is an ac ve scavenger hunt using your library skills! Older children who already have library skills will be challenged with a harder scavenger hunt. Par cipants will receive a prize for comple ng the scavenger hunt and there will be a drawing for a $25 Barnes and Noble card at the end of the event. Friday, July 8, 9-11 a.m. in the youth area.
5 Greendale Public Library Reading Program Registra on begins Monday, June 13thin the youth area. Open to all children, ages Pick up your reading log at the Greendale Public Library! Fill out reading logs to win gi coupons and prizes. The more reading logs you complete, the more chances you will have at winning prizes! All reading logs are due AT NOON on Friday, August 5th. Registra on is required but space is unlimited! Theme Weeks Week of June 27 through July 1: Shark Week Come get a big bite of everything shark at the library! Shark books, cra s, ac vi es, and more will swim your way all week in the youth area. Week of July 18 through 22: Pete the Cat Groovy Week Celebrate Pete the Cat with some groovy cra s and literacy ac vi es. For the past six years, Pete has taken the children s book publishing world by storm. We will celebrate Pete, his shoes, and his groovy a tude this week! Greendale Public Library Travel Buddy Is your family going on a vaca on, day trip, or stayca on this summer? Sign up to take Snoopy, Pinkie Pie, Dory, or one of our superhero animal buddies with you! We ask that you take good care of our friend on your trip, and that you a picture or send us a postcard! All of the pictures from the Travel Buddy program are in a fantas c scrapbook in the youth area. Stop by to see it! Stop by to see if a buddy is available! Lego Contest Enter our first annual Lego contest where the public will vote on their favorite entry! Submit your contest entry on Monday, June 20th.
