Approval of Minutes A motion was made to approve the minutes of the February 13, 2013, by Shari Ginsberg and seconded by Lori Lapping. The motion was unanimously approved.

2 Chair Report In Linda Rosen s absence the chair report was suspended. Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band The spring concert is scheduled for April 20 th at Stevenson High School. Buffalo Grove High School gave us a date of November 3, 2013 for the fall concert. Chris Gibson, Steve Bulmash, Shari Ginsberg, Mark Andrews and Lynne Schneider volunteered to work the spring concert. All volunteers are requested to be at Stevenson High School between 6:00 6:15pm. Lynne requested that she receive the materials for the program within a few days so that I can be done in time. The band is seeking additional venues to perform during the summer. Currently the band is booked for the July 4 th concert at Rotary Green and also on the Friday before the start of the Art Festival July 12 th. In addition, the Jazz Band will be playing at Willow Stream Park on July 23 rd. Artists League. Sharon Borstein reported that the February Artists League show at Indian Trails library was quite successful. The March meeting will be held at Village Hall on March 19, 2013, at 7:30PM. The guest speaker that was scheduled, Larry Goldberg, had family issues and is postponed until the April meeting. Due to this change in events Sharon Borstein said the artists will be presenting their works and the members will critique the pieces. Art Festival Carol reported that the management company for Town Center has agreed to allow us to use the center for this year s show. Amdur sent a revised contract and it was a two year agreement. Carol will review to see if the other corrections requested were also made. More volunteers are needed for the event. Carol asked for suggestions on recruiting additional volunteers. A suggestion was made to also look at various companies in the area who also send out their employees to do volunteer work in a community. Commission members will be coming into Village Hall to assist Carol with the planning phase of the fest. Old Business Great Big Little Art Show Sharon Borstein had requested ideas for potential celebrities to participate in this program. She will put all the names on an Excel spreadsheet and distribute to all the members. She is looking for people to add names and all pertinent information. Letters

3 will then be sent out requesting the donation of the artwork. These letters can be customized to add comments or special notes. Jennifer Maltas, Deputy Village Manager, provided information to the Village Board on the commission partnering with National Veteran s Art Museum in Chicago on this event. Carol will confirm this is approved. Since this program is planned for Spring of 2014 we will have to starting work on this quickly after the art festival. Winter Show Fran Sachs presented the following report: Sandy Greenberg and Fran Sachs attended the Fremd High School and Kirk School (NSSEO) Craft Shows on Saturday, March 2, Both of these are run by Festival Network Online ( We talked to several vendors and also the women who were running the Fremd show. Fremd had 200 vendors and Kirk had 100. Most people going to the seasonal craft fairs prefer the larger ones. Obviously, more to choose from. A show with 40 crafters could not compete with the larger ones that are nearly every weekend in the fall. Fremd Boosters (parent support group) has run their winter show for about 40 years and the spring show for 25 years. They require about 50 volunteers during the day. While Festival network gets the vendors and does publicity, the Boosters also work on these areas. Maps need to be made where the booth numbers will be. The night before the show, the volunteers measure out the booth sizes and tape and number the areas so the vendors know where they set up. The morning of the show, starting a couple of hours before the show opens, at least 20 teenagers are there to help the vendors bring in the merchandise. Others are at all doors with maps directing them to their spots. Fremd has a complete kitchen area with popcorn machines, hot dog cookers and all the food necessary for lunch and snacks, both for the vendors and shoppers. When we were there, we counted 8 volunteers that we could see just preparing and selling food. Kirk also sold lunches 5 different entries, drinks, and Jamba Juice smoothies. Prices ranged from $.75 for chips to $4.00 for smoothies. Both shows had bake sales, which meant more volunteers. Both shows had 5 areas with a balloon to denote the area. When a shopper came in, she was handed a half size paper which was a door prize entry form. As she walked around, the paper was stamped by the specific area until all 5 stamps were on the form. It was then entered in a drawing. Fremd s prize were two $25 Target gift cards. Kirk was 6 free raffle tickets. Vendors were asked to donate an item for the raffles. Both shows had raffle tickets for sale and had volunteers walking around selling tickets. Fremd also sold raffle tickets for $50 and a maximum of 2,000 tickets for a drawing for a 2013 Jeep Wrangler. We talked to several vendors at Fremd. Booth prices ranged from $100 for the main hallways to $80 in the smaller hallways. The gym was also used. If a vendor required

4 electricity, an additional $15 was charged. The winter Fremd show charges even more, as it is a bigger show. The Booster gets most of this money with a percentage going to Festival Network. All sales go to the individual vendors. After walking around the schools and seeing how it was set up, we do not think that Aptakisic School is big enough. Certainly not the gym and multi purpose rooms alone. All the hallways would need to be used. The prices that were mentioned at the last Arts Commission meeting did not entail using hallways. After the last summer art fair, it was said that volunteers were down. We don t believe that we could get the sufficient number of workers for a craft show to work. For the 2011 Bloomin Buffalo Grove, we had a committee of 5 that did the pre day work. The day of the show, we only had 5 other people volunteer. There was not enough traffic either. Every resident of Buffalo Grove received information about the sale. It was published in the newspapers and advertised online and the traffic was meager at best. It was too small for many to want to stop in. Sandy and Fran do not believe that this committee is prepared to take on the time and effort that would be required to make a craft show profitable. There was a discussion on What is art? since some members felt that craft work should not be considered art. Fred stated that our Mission Statement is To draw upon the diversity and artist s talent within the Buffalo Grove community and to promote a broad spectrum of the Arts which will serve to enrich our Village. Both Lynne Schneider and Sharon Borstein spoke in support of crafts since it is subjective and they felt that it was art. Sharon felt that of the Artists League members would participate in such an event. A suggestion was made to start seeking more volunteers. When we have people sign up for the Art Festival we will also ask if they would support other Arts Commission projects. Another suggestion was to partner with a not for profit organization to get additional support/volunteers for this program. Fran Sachs made a motion to postpone the consideration of this project until after the Art Festival. Barbara Herman seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. New Business None Village Report Trustee Trilling mentioned that elections are the first week of April and encouraged everyone to get out and vote. Carol will be on vacation and requested that the April meeting be rescheduled to April 17 th. No one had and issue with this date.

5 Adjourn A motion to adjourn was made by Lori Lapping and seconded by Barbara Herman. The motion was unanimously approved. The next meeting is scheduled for April 17, 2013 at 7:00pm in the Lower Level Conference Room.
