1 The Lions print FALL2012 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Fairfield Local School District Rated Excellent with Distinction By Courtney Huff and Tori Priest Fairfield Local School District has been awarded the honor of Excellent with Distinction for the school year; the highest ranking a school can receive from the Ohio Department of Education. Fairfield Local School District is the first county school to receive this ranking. The requirements for the Excellent with Distinction rating are difficult to achieve. The school must have a high performance index. They also must meet the majority of the report card indicators. The performance index has to be over 100, and the local report card index has to be at least a 25/26. There is a great source of pride in our community. It reinforces the confidence they have in us, said Superintendent Bill Garrett of Fairfield Local. The achievement proves that the students are getting a great education at a low cost. Our students and staff are all working hard and performing well together. This rating means better funding for our school district, school board member Tracy Evans stated. This rating also brings in extra funding. We receive $17 per student from the state. It is one of the rewards for getting this honor. Also, because of our success, the school attendance numbers are growing. People in the area recognize that we are a great school and a great place to be, said Garrett. Fairfield Local School District s plan now is to focus on not only maintaining what we have, but focusing on the new Common Core. Garrett said, Our biggest thing is to continue things we are doing and to be sure and address areas that might be weak. So, we have to make sure that we know these standards and assess our progress. In reaction to the new rating, Mr. Garrett said that he is extremely proud of the students and staff and they work very well together. Keep it up Fairfield! 6 THE LIONS PRINT Page 6 Fairfield Annual PTO Carnival By Kim Carmean On Friday, October 26th, 2012, Fairfield Elementary held the yearly PTO carnival. At the PTO Carnival there were many exciting games for the kids to play. The students would travel from game to game collecting tickets, which at the end of the fun filled night could be exchanged for prizes. Parents watched the excitement of their children while they played each game. They are so Safe Trick-or-Treat By Roshell Boles and Christa Duncan On October 25th, 2012, the Leesburg community held Safe Trick or Treat in Fairfield High School s Cafeteria. The night included neat costumes, passing out candy, and plenty of laughter. The night was created six years ago to promote community and safety during the Halloween season. The Fairfield Vocational Agriculture class developed the night to fulfill the need of a safe environment for the cute. I just love getting to watch all the little kids having so much fun, said Tammi Ayres. Those in attendance also had the option to bid on baskets filled with a variety of different items, which were created by the individual classrooms of Fairfield Elementary. Each class was assigned a theme and asked to contribute corresponding items to the baskets. A delicious dinner was offered for a reasonable five dollars a plate. The dinner consisted of chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, and your choice of a dessert. youth of the community. The event helps prevent accidents and potentially fatal incidents from occurring on a fun-filled evening. Safe Halloween is held yearly on Trick or Treat night. Local companies, the Fairfield High School student council, and various church groups each host a table in the Fairfield cafeteria to pass out candy to young ones. Fairfield High School is the place to be on trick or treat night so, if anyone missed out this year; we invite them next year to come and enjoy the laughter and treats. At the end of the evening all the children were exhausted from all the excitement. Tammi Ayres said, All in all, this turned out to be a pretty fun and eventful evening. Dynamic Duo: State Runners By Raeann Hurst and Courtney Huff On November 3rd, 2012, Michael Mangus and Blake Hildebrant competed in the State Cross Country Meet. It was held at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio. There were about 16 teams and roughly 200 runners. Both runners had high expectations. Last year Michael placed 63 rd and Blake placed 65 th. This year Michael was shooting for the top 25 and Blake was aiming for the top 40. Michael placed 14 th and Blake finished 77 th. They were the dynamic duo from Fairfield returning yet again from the previous year. To prepare for the meet, they both ran 45 miles a week. It s a good sense of accomplishment and pride in knowing our community supports us, said Hildebrant. Great job boys!
