1 Webster County 4-H Newsletter October 2018 Issue 4-H trip to an ISU Football Game What s Inside: Upcoming Events Clover Kids Food Stand Schedule Volunteer Spotlight Calendar of Events Dear 4-H family, Fall has arrived and the new 4-H year has arrived! Welcome all new and returning 4-H members and families. If you haven t had a chance to re-enroll (members, club leaders, project leaders, and additional volunteers), please be sure to do so soon. Contact the office if you have any re-enrollment questions. Please don t hesitate to stop into the office, , or call me if you have questions or ideas. It is going to be a great year! 2 Member Recruitment It s 4-H recruitment time! It s important to continually spread the word about our county s 4-H program. Personally contact friends and families in your area and encourage them to get involved or invite a friend to your next 4-H meeting. Let them see the numerous opportunities and fun experiences 4-H has to offer! Club Leaders Club award packets, officer awards, installation of officer schedule/information, and achievement awards are due back to the office by October 10. Contact the office about picking up your officer training materials by the end of October. Also, each club is asked to make at least 20 placemats to be used at the banquet in November. Please bring placemats to the office by November 15. Pizza Party Does your club want to win a pizza party? A pizza party will be awarded to clubs with the top percentage of re-enrollments. Winners will be announced at the banquet on November 18. Club Program Cover Contest We are challenging our 4-H members to design the cover of our club program. All ideas must be submitted to the office by November 5 and need to be 8.5 x 11 (portrait). No colored ink and the artwork must be able to be copied. The Youth Committee will choose the winner in November. Last year s winner was Lauren Harris from the Washington Winners Club. Awards Banquet & Volunteer Recognition Our annual banquet will be held on Sunday, November 18 at the Starlite Village in Fort Dodge. Eligible 4-Hers and volunteers will receive an invite in the mail. Additional tickets for families will be available for purchase. Spirit Award Nominations Nomination forms are found on our website and need to be turned into Lindsay by October 15. Youth Committee and County Council members will make the final selection. Winners will be announced at the awards banquet on November 18. Iowa State Football Game/Trip Webster County 4-H members who participated in a communication event or received top ten rate of gain for sheep, market beef, or swine at the fair were invited to attend the ISU vs. South Dakota State football game. 4-H members and chaperones traveled to Ames in style by charter bus, met new 4-H ers, ate supper while hanging out with friends, and enjoyed a sweet, but short football game in the stadium. Although the weather wasn t in our favor, the 4-H ers still had a good time Thank you to our chaperones for all of their help during the trip! Chaperones for the trip included: Kelley McGonegle, Jennifer Hess, Katie Allison, Janet Hubbell, Amber Graves, Aaron McHone, and Dave Anderson. Also, thank you to all of our Webster County 4-H Foundation donors for sponsoring the trip! County Council & Youth Committee The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Webster County Fairgrounds Auditorium. Scholarship interviews for seniors will take place before and after the meeting. Check for details. Rifle Discipline Rifle discipline starts on Saturday, October 6 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Practices are held at the Rifle & Pistol Club of Fort Dodge. Participants must bring hearing protection and safety glasses to each meeting. Cooking & Baking 101 A new and exciting project area starting in January! This group will meet once a month (Sunday evenings) in the new kitchen at the Webster County Fairgrounds until May. 4-H ers involved will have the opportunity to learn the basics of cooking while baking fun and new recipes each month. To help cover the project expenses, there will be a one time fee of $15. Space is limited! 3 Millions of youth, parents, volunteers and alumni across the country will be celebrating National 4-H Week from October Let s celebrate the week together! Show-Me-Sunday Share why 4-H is important to you on social media and use #InspireKidstoDo or #TrueLeaders and #websterco4h on social media. Model Monday Be a role model on Monday and share with others what 4-H stands for. Try-It-Out Tuesday Try a new 4-H project! Check our your friend s chickens or cook a meal for your family. Try something new and see how much fun it is! Wear it Wednesday Show off your 4-H pride by wearing a 4-H shirt to school. Share your pictures on our Facebook page. Thank You Thursday Write a thank you to your 4-H leader or anyone who has helped you throughout 4-H. Tell a Friend Friday Tell a friend about 4-H and your favorite experience! Sign up link: Sunday, October 14 C/C Sidekicks Volunteer Spotlight Name: Jennifer Hess Volunteer Position: Washington Winners Club Leader 1. How long have you been a 4-H volunteer? This will be my third year 2. What do you enjoy most about your 4-H role? What I enjoy most about my 4-H role is watching the children mature and grow over the years. Just in the short period of time I have been volunteering as a leader I have watched children bloom and grow into better public speakers, better communicators, grow in their self-confidence, and expand in their knowledge of the world around them. 3. What do you like to do in your spare time? I have decided to pursue an MBA at Iowa State through the Professional MBA program therefore after being a full time working mother of 2 beautiful daughters and studying, I do not have much spare time. However, when I do have spare time, I love to spend my time with my daughters watching movies or sleeping. 4. What places have you lived in? I was born and raised in Southern California in Agoura Hills, California. I went to college in Austin, Texas and I have lived in Fort Dodge, Iowa for the past 20 years with my husband of 14 years. 5. Where is your favorite travel spot? My parents lived for 6 years in Zambia and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit them on more than 1 occasion. My favorite travel spot has occurred during one of those visits where we went to Zanzibar. Zanzibar is a little island off the coast of Tanzania and I truly believe it is a small piece of heaven that fell onto the earth.
