Big Thanks to the Workroom Committee. The behind the scenes work you do every day for the staff is amazing! Big Thanks to Leah Streem, the book fair committee, and our parent volunteers that staffed the book fair on a great book fair! Big Thanks to our Orchard office staff. We appreciate all you do to help us every day! Big Thanks to Kelly Ann Worthington for helping with the Newsletter every month to get everyone the important information they need.
4 A Message from Your Orchard Middle School Principal: Fall has arrived! Hayrides, pumpkins, apple cider and Halloween candy as well as the end of the first quarter is just around the corner. Please do not forget to log on to the parent viewer on Powerschool to review your student's grades. More information about conferences will be sent home on October 26th. Just like last year students can wear their Halloween costumes to school on Wednesday, October 31st. Costumes should be school appropriate and should not be offensive to any race, religion or culture. As in the past, plastic swords, guns, knives or any imitation weapons are prohibited at school as are roller skates, roller blades and skateboards. Masks cannot be worn during the school day as well. Make-up should not include fake blood. Costumes must also abide with our dress code; for example, bare midriffs, etc. are not acceptable. Flip-flops and pajama pants as parts of a costume will be accepted. Parents will be notified if the costume is inappropriate and will be asked to bring in a change in outfit for their student. All costumes must be prepared at home. No hairsprays, face painting, or makeup should be done at school. Halloween Parties start at 2:55 pm on Wednesday, October 31st. PTA will provide a sheet pizza for each homeroom. Students will plan their own parties. Parents may request that their student not participate in the Halloween activities. They may pick up students at 2:55 pm and the early-out will be excused. Students not participating in the party but remaining at Orchard will meet in the library and they can read or work on any missing assignment. The sixth grade leadership team will collect candy for US troops. Please consider donating some candy on November 1st and November 2nd. Some students are making reading a part of their daily routine, for others it takes more support and coaching. Here are some tips to help your child adapt to their reading commitment. Set a regular time for reading. Set a regular place for reading. Give them opportunities to explore the public library. Try to limit distractions (TV, radio, phone, siblings). Talk to your child about his or her own reading. Read with your child. Read to your child; have your child read to you; read the same book.
5 Any way you can be involved with your child's reading pays dividends in motivation. Red Ribbon Week 2018 will begin on Monday, October 22nd and end on Friday, October 26th. This is a special week designed to promote and encourage our students to lead drug-free lifestyles. The Orchard students and staff will be participating in a variety of ways. A different activity is planned for each day of this special week. Our theme this year is: "Good Character, Good Choices Drug & Bully Free!" Students and staff can show their support for a drug-free lifestyle by participating in the following ways: Monday: Wear Red. Tuesday: Show you have the power to be Drug Free by dressing like a Super Hero. Wednesday: Show unity against bullying and drugs. WEAR ORANGE. Thursday: Team up against drugs. Students can wear clothing representing their favorite team. Friday: Orchard has the Power to Be Drug Free. Wear your Solon Spirit Wear. Please have your students check their backpacks before leaving for school each day. Make sure that they have their homework, home folder and agenda book. If they play an instrument, make sure that they bring their instrument to school on the days of their lessons. Planning ahead will eliminate unnecessary trips to school and will allow for students to grow in their responsibility. Have a wonderful month. If you need anything, don't hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Cari Mineard Your Principal at Orchard Middle School CHECK THE ORCHARD MIDDLE SCHOOL WEBSITE FOR CLUB DATES AS THEY CHANGE THROUGHOUT EACH MONTH AND OVER THE SCHOOL YEAR: Intramurals and Clubs Available: Soccer, Pin Ball, Volleyball, Basketball, Deck Tennis, Mat Ball, Art Club, Wellness Club, Chess Club, Environmental Club, Newspaper Club, Ensemble, Robotics, Science Club, Science Olympiad, Yearbook Club
