1 Otoraro Lodge 22 Counil Servie Center, 504 South Conord Road West Chester, PA Dear Parent/Guardian, Congratulations on your son s eletion into the, Souting s National Honor Soiety. He has been hosen by his fellow Souts to beome a part of our Brotherhood. Through his dediation to the ideals of Souting, and his earnest exemplifiation of the Sout Oath and Law in his daily life, he has the opportunity to join this prestigious organization and earn the title of Arrowman. The was founded in 1915 in the nearby Philadelphia Counil; its purpose was to honor and reognize Souts and Souters for their steadfast dediation to the priniples of Souting. In order to be induted into the Order, he must undertake an Ordeal, to prove his willingness to serve others, just as all Brothers have one before him. Otoraro Lodge hosts three (3) Ordeal and Servie weekends eah year, April, June and September. He will have one year from the time of his eletion to omplete his Ordeal. While you are free to hoose any of the three Ordeal weekends depending on other obligations to shool, sports and his troop, we strongly enourage him to omplete his Ordeal in April or June, as these weekends are ruial in preparing the Reservation for the Summer Camp season. The Ordeal itself is a weekend long proess in whih Souts and Souters as asked to heerfully provide servie to the Reservation. Ordeal Candidates are supervised by qualified adults and older Souts at all times, pursuant to BSA Poliy. At no time is hazing or any unsafe at permitted. You an rest assured that this experiene, while hallenging, will enrih your son s Souting experiene. After ompleting his Ordeal and earning the distintive poket flap and sash whih identify our members, your son is not only a member of the Brotherhood, but is now easily identified as a model Sout and Leader within the Souting program. We enourage all of our new Arrowmen to supplement their ativity in their home unit by beoming ative in the Lodge and its programs. We realize and understand that Souting an be expensive yet rewarding, and to ensure that no Sout loses out on this opportunity, sholarship funds are available to Souts with finanial need. Please ontat us for additional information. On behalf of the Brothers of Otoraro Lodge, we would like to ongratulate you on your son s eletion as a andidate of the. We hope that he will join us to omplete his Ordeal at the next possible opportunity. We have enlosed a Frequently Asked Questions sheet for you to review. 3 Otoraro Lodge 22 Youth-Adult-Parent Ordeal Candidate General Information Chester County Counil Boy Souts of Ameria Congratulations! You or your son has reently been eleted as a andidate for the National Honor Soiety of the Boy Souts of Ameria, the Order of the Arrow. The OA as it is alled, is a national brotherhood of honored Souts that originated in We ve ompiled some basi information to help you understand more about the OA, the Ordeal Weekend and our Lodge, Otoraro Lodge 22. Purpose The purpose of the is fourfold: to reognize those ampers who best exemplify the Sout Oath and Law in their daily lives, to develop and maintain amping traditions and spirit, to promote Sout amping, and to rystallize the Sout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in heerful servie to others. Indution (Ordeal Weekend) The indution eremony, alled the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership. During the experiene, andidates maintain silene, reeive small amounts of food, work on amp improvement projets, and are required to sleep alone, apart from other ampers. The entire experiene is designed to teah signifiant values. This weekend will offer a unique opportunity for one to reflet on their personal ommitment to the priniples of the Sout Oath & Law as well as beome aquainted with the priniples & purposes of the. The weekend is undertaken by every new andidate and is a meaningful and inspiring experiene that will not soon be forgotten. Mystery The, reognizing the attrativeness of the unknown, utilizes the form of mystery. To ensure that Souts who are induted into the do not have their experiene lessened or spoiled, we try to reveal modest amounts of information about the Ordeal weekend and eremonies to the Souts. Mystery is meant to make the program exiting and hallenging to the youth, not unapproahable to their parents. More details of all our eremonies are open to any parent who would like to know them. Brotherhood Membership After 10 months of servie, a member may take part in the Brotherhood eremony, whih plaes further emphasis on the ideals of Souting and the Order. Completion of this eremony signifies full membership in the. Leadership In addition to our Lodge Ativities, the OA provides some of the most valuable youth leadership training and opportunities available. The is a youth run organization with all offiers being under the age of 21. Souts have the opportunity to be trained and beome leaders at the Lodge (entire ounil), Setion (in our ase, 5 lodges make up NE-6B), Region (the whole Northeast), or National level. All deisions are made by the youth and their eleted youth leaders. They plan and arry out the programs as the Lodge Offiers and ommittee members. At every step of the way, they have adult advisers. In the OA, adults are not leaders, they re advisers. They help the Souts make good deisions and respet their wishes unless there are safety or legal onerns with their planned ativities. Otoraro Lodge 22 Our lodge name Otoraro, in the original Lenni Lenape Indian language, means Muddy River. Our lodge totem is the Canada goose. Our lodge partiipates in many events every year. Some of the events inlude: Fall Fellowship in September, the Lodge Banquet in Marh, NE-6B Conlave in June and many more. Indution in the will open many new doors for you or your son. These opportunities will build upon the knowledge one has already reeived during their Souting experienes. This is truly an exiting time for you and your son. Your enouragement will be appreiated. Please visit our lodge website, for ommittee ontat information, urrent lodge alendar, monthly & annual lodge events, annual dues information, forms, lodge newsletter, OA history, setional, regional and national links. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ontat us and we ll do our best to help. Visit our website at We, as Arrowmen, have the great privilege of pointing the way to other people... it s the way to happiness in life. It s the way of heerful servie. Dr. E.
