OPENING ACTIVITY: EXTREME SPEED SKATING CHALLENGE Lesson 1 Purpose: This activity will engage the children s attention as they enter the room and will reinforce the Winter Extreme X-Factor games theme. Description: The children will compete in a timed speed skating relay, one team at a time. The teams will be timed to see who can complete the relay the fastest. Whichever team finishes the relay in the shortest amount of time is the winning team for that round. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, wax paper, cones (optional), and the Opening Activity media elements from the Lesson 1 MediaShout or ProPresenter File. Note: Play the Doors Open Music when the children begin to enter the room. To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. Let s get started! 2. We are going to play a timed relay game called Extreme Speed Skating Challenge. 3. We are going to pick three volunteers from one team at a time. 4. Each volunteer will stand on two pieces of wax paper, one for each foot. 5. The three of you will then get in a line and, one at a time, skate as fast as you can around your team. Note: If your teams are different sizes, you may want to have all of the teams go around the same team. This is where cones may be useful. Make sure that the relay route is the same for every team. Additionally, as you are timing the teams, keep the times to yourself and don t announce it after each team has gone. Instead, announce the winning team with the lowest time after all teams have gone. This will prevent the children from giving up in the middle of the activity if they can see that their time is less than another team s time. 6. Your feet must always be on the wax paper skates. If you lose your skate, you have to go back and put your foot back on the wax paper before continuing. 7. When you have made it around your team, tag the next person in line and the game continues. 8. Once all three of the volunteers have completed their Extreme Speed Skating Challenge, we will stop the timer. 9. The other team(s) will then compete while being timed. 10. The team that completes the relay within the shortest amount of time will be the winning team for that round. Note: If you are able to play multiple rounds, you could instead keep a running total of all the team s times and, at the end, whichever team has the shortest amount of time will be the grand champion of that day s Opening Activity Elevate
Note: Choose three volunteers from one team. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, watch the Teacher/Co-Teacher Training Video. During the activity, say the following: 1. Are you ready? Kids, are you ready to cheer for your teammates? Okay! 2. Ready, Set, Go! Note: Play the Game Go Music and start the timer. 3. Keep skating! 4. Kids, keep cheering. 5. Great job! (Stop timer.) 6. Now it s time for us to pick new volunteers from the next team and play again. Note: Reset the game with new wax paper for the children if necessary and continue playing this game with new volunteers until it is time to start your children s worship hour. After this activity, say the following: 1. Great job with that game! 2. Let s get ready for our countdown to Winter Extreme! 2016 Elevate
Lesson Goal: The children will learn that it isn t enough just to come to church and read their Bibles. They also need to obey the teachings that they hear at church and read in their Bibles. 4 LESSON 1: DISCIPLES OF JESUS LISTEN AND OBEY! Single Teacher Digital Media Script WATCHING THE BIBLE LESSON AND SKIT ON VIDEO Purpose Statement: The children will learn that it isn t enough just to come to church and read their Bibles. They also need to obey the teachings that they hear at church and read in their Bibles. Materials/Props Needed: Winter Extreme Lesson 1 MediaShout or ProPresenter File. Costume (Ski jacket or winter vest, gloves, scarf, and winter hat.) Props: LifeSavers Gummies or chocolate gold coins for Winter Extreme Medallions. Opening Activity Supplies: See the Help Sheet for a list of supplies. Team Game Supplies: See the Help Sheet for a list of supplies. Begin the Opening Activity. Lead the children through the Opening Activity Extreme Speed Skating Challenge, or another Large Group Activity to engage the children s attention as they enter the room. For a detailed example, watch the Winter Extreme L1 Teacher/Co-Teacher Training Video. Begin Large Group Time with the Countdown Video. [1] Teacher enters. Welcome, everyone, to our brand-new series: Winter Extreme! This is going to be awesome! (to children) Are you ready? We re going to warm up with some singing. Everybody up! Let s sing! Teacher leads the children in singing Everlasting. [2] Wow, you did a great job singing! Now that you are warmed up I think it would be a good time to go over our two main rules on the mountain. [3] There are only two, but if everyone follows them we will all have a great time together. [4] Rule number one is be respectful of authority and always do what they tell you to do. And rule number two is [5] be respectful of those around you - no talking, no pushing, no kicking, or saying mean things. So, we re here for the annual Winter Extreme X-Factor games! Every year the best extreme snowboarders, skiers, skaters, sledders, and base jumpers all come here for a huge competition. And I hear that four-time champion, Rock Steadfast, is here this year! #1 #2 #3 #4 # Elevate
Yes! And this year is special because it s a team competition. And speaking of competition...we will be having a little competition of our own as well. There are going to be times when each of your teams here today, who aren t offcially competing in the games, will get to compete against each other. If tyou win, you will hear your winner song and every member on your team will get an offcial Winter Extreme Medallion! (LifeSavers Gummies or chocolate gold coins) Let s listen to them now. Play Drumroll and Winter Extreme Winner Songs for each team and encourage the children to participate. [6] [7] [8] But that s not all! Not only are we going to get to watch the Winter Extreme games, we are also going to use our time on this mountain to learn about being disciples of Jesus. A disciple of Jesus is someone who does the things that Jesus taught. But in order to do that, we have to listen to His teachings and obey them. Jesus told us about listening and obeying in a parable that He told to a crowd of people. Let s watch. Play Bible Lesson Video. [9] Disciples Of Jesus Listen And Obey! Let s make that our Main Point! Now, in order to remember this, I think we might need to do a little shouting. Everybody up! [10] The Teacher leads the children to make up cheerleader-type hand motions that go along with the Main Point. Once everyone has gone over the Main Point, have the children repeat it with the motions two or three times. Play the Drumroll and Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team. [11] Encourage all the children to participate. Award the winning team with a Winter Extreme Medallion. That was some loud shouting! I hope you shout that loud when you re cheering on Rock Steadfast in this year s competition! (looks at watch) As I said earlier, this year is special because it s going to be a team competition! Come on, they re about to start the games! #6 #7 #8 #9 #10 #11 Teacher exits. Play the Skit Video. [12] Teacher re-enters. #12 Wow, that was crazy! It didn t make any sense for Scooter to have listened to everything Rock taught him, but then not do it. But you know what? We do the exact same thing Elevate
Many times we hear what God wants us to do, but we don t do it. And when that happens, we are acting just like Scooter. It s very important that we obey and actually do what we learn from the Bible and from church. If we don t, we re just like the foolish builder that built on the sand, or we re just like Scooter when he didn t do what Rock taught him. We can t just listen to what God wants us to do, we need to listen and obey what He tells us to do! In fact, I have a Bible Verse that will help you all remember what we talked about today. Check it out. [13] Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise... Matthew 7:24a (NLT) The Teacher leads the children with motions and then see which team can do the Bible Verse the best. Play the Drumroll and the Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team, and award the winning team with a Winter Extreme Medallion. [14] You know what? Watching Rock and Scooter compete in the games made me want to do a little competition myself, and I ve got just the game to do it. It s called Frozen T-Shirt! [15] TEAM GAME - Frozen T-Shirt Watch the Teacher and Co-Teacher Training Video and see the Help Sheet to learn how the game is played. Play it with the teams and then play the Drumroll and Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team. Award the winning team with a Winter Extreme Medallion. [16] (CONT D) That was fun! Okay, going back to our lesson, when we obey God and do the things He tells us to do, we make Him very happy. And did you know that one of the things He asks us to do is to worship Him through our Offering? Let s do that right now. Teacher leads the children in taking the Offering. [17] OFFERING Thank you everyone for bringing your Offering. It makes God very happy when we obey Him. And you know what else makes Him happy? When we worship Him in song. Let s all stand up and do that before we head to our Winter Extreme Small Groups! Teacher leads the children in singing Heartbeat. [18] Good job, everyone! Now we need a drumroll! Play the Drumroll and Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team and and award the winning team with a Winter Extreme Medallion. [19] Now I want you to head to your Team Group, where you re going to learn #13 #14 #15 #16 #17 #18 # Elevate
even more about ways that following Jesus teachings will help us. I ll see you back here soon. TEAM GROUPS (SMALL GROUPS) [20] Welcome back! Now it s time for another Extreme Competition. Let s check it out! Play the Extreme Competion Race Video. [21] After the Race Video, play the Drumroll and Winter Extreme Winner Song for the winning team and award the winning team a Winter Extreme Medallion. [22] It s time for us to find out how much we ve learned on the mountain today, so let s play our review game: Help Team Extreme! Team Extreme has to complete all of their events. Answer these questions to help them. [23] WEEKLY REVIEW ACTIVITY - Help Team Extreme Teacher leads the children through the questions. Bring up a child from each team and have them compete to see who gets to answer. If they answer correctly, give them a Winter Extreme Medallion. Thanks for your help. And remember, it s not enough to just listen here at church, you need to obey too, because Disciples Of Jesus Listen And Obey! See you next week! #20 #21 #22 # Elevate
