5 Cheerleading Guidelines 1145 Pineville-Matthews Rd, Matthews, NC (704) (704) FAX Purpose: To portray a Christ-like example both on and off the court, to promote interest, enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and cooperation among cheerleaders and their parents. Teamwork is a must. Varsity Sports Requirements : Making a varsity team is a privilege, not a right, and with this comes much responsibility. We will cheer at most girl and guy basketball games. Being a part of a team is very important. We learn to depend on each other. A team is like a machine. When a part is missing, it cannot function well. We, as a team, must practice and work together in order to function well as a team and maximize safety. Practice and working together is what it will take to make the Carmel Christian Cougars the best cheerleading squad possible. Requirements: Exhibit leadership, have a pleasing personality, understand that cheerleading takes priority over other activities, and understand that cheerleaders function as a team. Cheerleading Rules: If any of the rules are broken, the coach will issue an appropriate consequence: 1. Being late or leaving early will result in conditioning (at the end of practice). 2. Wearing accessories that are not coach approved for a game or performance. (No jewelry, only clean, short nails with pale nail polish, hair accessories, etc.) Taking off the item does not remove or negate the consequence. 3. Not properly wearing practice clothes, game day attire, or cheerleading uniforms. This includes hair in a ponytail, socks, bloomers, and poms. 4. Apathy (lack of interest, failure to perform properly, mouthing words, not saying words, marking motions, etc.), display of anger, resentment, or inappropriate behavior toward a squad member, opponent, or coach after a warning has been given. Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated. 5. Eating, drinking, or chewing gum while cheering OR at practice.. Bottled water is permitted at games. 6. Failure to be submissive to school rules outlined in the Athletic Handbook 7. Leaving a game or cheerleading activity without permission from the coach. 8. Talking with spectators or fellow students during practices, performances, games, etc. 9. No tumbling/stunting unless the coach is present. Automatic benching will result for anyone who tumbles/stunts without the coach present. Attendance: Camps, practices, tumbling classes and games are MANDATORY. Every cheerleader is expected to attend all practices and games. Each cheerleader is required to attend camp. The only excused absences that will be accepted will be death in the family or illness of the cheerleader.

6 The cheerleader, not the parent, should call, text, or the coach prior to missing the event due to illness or death in the family. Text is preferred means of contact. Another cheerleader informing the coach of an absence is not acceptable. Practices/Games: ALL GAMES ARE MANDATORY! Doctor s appointments, work, school work, etc. are not acceptable reasons to miss practice. Every cheerleader is expected to be on time, come properly dressed, give 100 percent, and be cooperative and attentive at each practice and/or game. Every cheerleader must be at school for half of the day in order to participate at practice and/or cheer the game. If the cheerleader is not in school for half of the day, she may not be allowed to participate at practice and/or cheer the game, but she will be expected to attend and sit with the coach and support her team. *The practice schedule is subject to change and is overruled by a game on our cheer schedule. Coach Siragusa reserves the right to hold additional practices as necessary. Grades: A Carmel Christian Student-Athlete will become ineligible if they have 2 D s or 1 F. each is an ambassador and leader at Carmel Christian School. Cheerleaders set an example to other students; therefore, it is the cheerleader s responsibility to keep her grades up to the standard. This responsibility helps prepare the cheerleader for the future and reaffirms that education is most important. Process: Grade Checks will be done every four and a half weeks (mid-quarter and end of quarter). There is an appeal level with the Athletic Director and the Principal to allow a student to still participate in the event of extenuating circumstances. Students that are ineligible will be ineligible for two (2) weeks. Students may not miss class time for an athletic early dismissal Students may practice, but cannot participate in games Students may attend games, sit on the bench, but cannot dress out in uniform Ineligible Students are required to turn in a completed Weekly Academic Report to the Athletic Office At the end of two weeks, ineligible students may return to game play if the student s grades are moving in a positive direction. All return to play will be at the discretion of the Athletic Director and the principal. Uniforms: Uniforms will be provided by Carmel Christian School. Uniforms must be kept clean and neat at all times. Uniforms will be issued before camp and must be returned clean one week after basketball season ends or a fine of $1.00 per day per piece will accrue. Seasons: Varsity cheerleading is a one season sport: winter. Cheerleading begins October 13th and will end with a banquet in January. A practice schedule will be available and ed out to cheer candidates. A cheerleader who doesn t fulfill her commitment may not try out the following season.

7 Preseason Conditioning: All potential cheerleaders are encouraged to condition and work out before and during the season. This will help with endurance through tryouts and the season. Each cheerleader will be required to run a mile in less than 12 minutes and complete two sets of 15 push-ups with correct form as a team. These conditioning requirements will be tested in October. Practice: Begins October 23rd and will continue through January 15th. Each girl is required to condition during the summer and be fit and ready for practice to resume in October. Accountability & Responsibility: The Carmel Christian School Cheerleading Program believes in accountability and responsibility as hallmarks to building a successful program. In our efforts to instill these values in the girls, we will give firm and fair consequences to any cheerleader who chooses to not follow the rules. Consequences: Most consequences will involve additional running to be completed at the end of the practice. This running time will allow the cheerleader to reflect on her choice of action while increasing her aerobic conditioning and overall physical and mental health. The coach can decide if the action of the cheerleader results in the entire team to perform conditioning. This consequence system of running, conditioning, and at times the loss of cheerleading privileges is organized to encourage cheerleaders to follow the rules and contribute to the team while benefiting the cheerleader both physically and mentally. Cheerleaders will earn additional laps and/or conditioning if they do not adhere to the rules. Please be aware your daughter may not end her practice time at the appointed time if she has earned extra conditioning. If you must sit out a game, you must attend the game and sit with the coach. You will not need to wear your uniform. Please note that sitting out is not a license to socialize with friends as you are still a vital part of the team. If you fail to show up for your sit out game without notice to the coach and for an unexcused reason, you will be issued three additional strikes and sit out two games. Captains: Captains are not always chosen, however, if captains are chosen, coaches have the final say on who receives that honor. Responsibilities include helping lead the squad spiritually (with devotionals/prayer time) and athletically, choreographing quarter/half time routines, calling cheers at games, and holding squad members accountable

The risk also includes catastrophic injuries such as permanent paralysis or even death from landing or falls on the back, neck or head.
