1 HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Hello to all of the Washington County 4-H Members! For those students, ages 9-18 who haven t filled out their enrollment form yet, you only have until December 20th to join and get in on the fun. Enrollment forms are available from the Extension Office. Come by the office or call us at or check us out at We are also on Facebook; just type in Washington County Extension Office and like us to keep up on all of the latest photos and announcements. Remember that if school is canceled due to bad weather, any project club meetings or 4-H activities scheduled for that day are canceled too. If the event takes place on a Saturday, listen to WLBN-WLSK for cancellation information. SAVE THE DATE FOR 4-H CAMP! May 28th - 31st, 2019 Cooperative Extension Service Washington County 245 Corporate Drive Springfield, KY Fax: WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY Camp applications will be available in February. 4-H Agent Update Unfortunately, our hiring process has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. We hope to have news of your new agent soon! Please bear with us as we sort through this process. We want the best for our county. 4-H Country Ham What is the difference between city ham and country ham? How does a ham become a country ham? Learn these facts and more while curing a country ham in 4-H! This project requires a 4-H er to be a member of the Hooves and Horns 4-H Club and earn six educational hours during the club year. The registration fee for the Country Ham project is $60 for the two hams a member will cure. The 4-Her must also give a speech at the KY State Fair while the hams are being judged. For an application for the Country Ham project, contact the Washington County Extension Office. Applications are due to the extension office by December 10th.
2 PROJECT CLUB MEETINGS It s time to get involved in one of the many 4-H project clubs that 4-H offers. Here is a listing of upcoming meetings for December. Many will have deadlines for membership. Hooves & Horns 4-H Club learn about all species of livestock and have the opportunity to participate in livestock judging and other related activities. The next meeting will be December 10th, 6:30 p.m. at the home of Craig and Laura Arnold. Country Ham Contracts will be due with payment at this meeting. Please hold Martin Luther King day open for cleaning your country ham. Time will be announced later. Contact the extension office for complete details and directions. Sharpshooters 4-H Club learn safety rules and environmental stewardship when you join the Sharpshooters Club. The FINAL membership meeting is set for Tuesday, December 4th, 6:30 p.m. at the extension office. Membership is open only through December 20th, so don t miss out. Each family should bring a snack food to share. Check out the photos from this year s awards night that took place earlier this fall. A Coaches Only meeting will be held on November 27th, 6:30 at the Extension Office Young Riders 4-H Club both horse and horseless club activities are offered year around. Club meetings are held the third Monday of each month. The December club meeting will be Monday, December 17 th, 6:30 p.m. at the extension office. Each 4-H member should bring a $10 horse related gift to exchange and a snack food to share. Club members also have plans to do several field trips in December so contact the extension office for complete information. Spurs & Furs 4-H Club learn about rabbits and poultry when you join the Spurs & Furs Club. The club always meets on the third Tuesday of each month with the exception of this December. The December meeting will be Tuesday, December 11 h, 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. Contact the extension office for complete details. Best Sew-er s in Town 4-H Club Starting in January, the members will be working on their sewing projects they will model in the 4-H Fashion Revue coming up in the spring. The first club meeting will be announced at a later date. If you signed up for 4-H sewing, you will receive a letter with details of the first meeting. 3 Snickerdoodle Cookies Sandra Bastin, Extension Specialist, Food and Nutrition, Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service in Super Star Chef Kneads a Little Dough Yield: 4 dozen cookies Ingredients 1 ½ cups sugar ¾ cup butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons cream of tartar ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon, ground STATE FAIR RECIPE 1. Preheat the oven to 400 o F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 ½ cups sugar and butter; beat until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs; beat well. 3. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt together; mix until well blended. Slowly add the flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture until well mixed. 4. Cover the bowl of dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for about an hour. 5. Remove the dough from the refrigerator. Shape dough into ½ balls. 6. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon. Roll dough in this mixture and place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. 7. Bake at 400 o F for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately remove cookies from the cookie sheets to wire racks to cool. For the Fair: After the cookies have completely cooled, choose three cookies that are the same size. Place the cookies on a disposable plate. Place the plate in a re-closable zip-type plastic bag.
4 4-H Sharpshooter s Banquet Highlights The Austin McBride Sportsmanship Award was received by 4-H Sharpshooter members, Leah Russell, Talon Owens, Landon Kays and Dylan Mattingly Danielle Ray, Gabe Allen and Hunter Bobblett received silver belt buckles for their five year membership in the 4-H Sharpshooters Club.
