1 PENAIR Headteacher Mr J Davidson POST Friday 14th October 2016 Careers Fair! On Thursday October 13th Year 10 visited Cornwall Careers Show at Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge. Over 100 local, regional and national employers, educational establishments and training providers were available to inspire students. Students were able to sample a wide range of careers with activities such as coding and programming, baking, printmaking, woodwork, nail art, medics skills and crime scene investigation. They also had the opportunity to talk to Colleges and Universities about the courses on offer and entry requirements. New House Captains! We would like to formally introduce you to our new, year 10, house captain team for 2016/2017 Sennen Tallulah Williams & Josh Rowe Crantock Paris Simpson & Hollie Noble Fistral Jenna Wardle & Alex Wilson Gyllyngvase Natalie Hood & Olly Cleghorne We also have Anna West who is our house representative on the School Council. They are a super team with lots of ideas to take the house system forward. If you have an idea, or would like to see something included in the vivo shop or as a house competition, then please let one of the team know. Look out for information about the next inter house competition, coming soon! Year 11 Drama & Dance Performance On Thursday 13th October our Year 11 drama and dance students put on a show for family and friends. The performance started at 6pm and was a great pleasure to watch. Thank you to those who attended and those who performed.

2 Creative Club- Poem of the Month! I hold the torch to guide her But she doesn t even know It acts as a spotlight When she puts on a show It shows her the way of life Deceivers right and wrong But she walks down the wrong path Because it doesn t seem as long. Sometimes I think: I ll just drop it, leave her blind But I can t; I love her And I d never leave her behind. One day, I promise I ll turn the torch around And maybe she ll realise That what she s been looking for Has been found Written by Alyssia Clapson South West Cyclo-Cross at Penair! On the 6th of November, Penair will be hosting round 6 of the South West Cyclocross Season. This is a super event with races for all ages and abilities, from under 8 to Super Grand veterans and even a novice category. The children s races will be held from 10 and the adult race starts at 1:30. It is a great event, you don t need to have a cyclocross bike to take part, a mountain bike will do the job. You can register to take part in the event by going to the following link, or you can enter on the day. There will be prizes for all the children who take part and for the winners of the adult categories, so why not give it a go? If you don t fancy the idea of getting on a bike it is a great spectator sport, so why not come and give some cheers to some of the SW regions fastest competitors?

3 We would like to say a big congratulations to Alfie Peters who finished his time with us at Penair last September but has continued to achieve great things. Throughout Alfie s schooling he has competed in big cycling events and has now received an offer from a UCI professional cycling squad to join their Junior Team for the 2017 season. Alfie has been extremely committed to his chosen sport which has resulted in him being away Individual Achievements Alfie continues to impress! almost every weekend, and this also made studying for his GCSE s more difficult. However with the extra help and support of staff at Penair, Alfie ended up with good grades in his 9 GCSE s which enabled him to get onto the Level 3 Diploma at Truro College. Alfie was also diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 13 but has never let this get in the way of anything he has and continues to achieve. Well done Alfie! Keep up the good work! Artist of the Week! I created my art in lesson time and I did it in the style of Zoe Wright, a contemporary Cornish textiles artist. I was inspired by her work, so I developed my own art work using some of her techniques. My piece is of a boat in the harbour, I m not sure which harbour in particular! Using only watercolours, pencils and pens I was pleased with how it turned out considering it didn t take too long to complete. I enjoyed doing it because my favourite thing about art is getting the freedom to draw something that s in your head, and experimenting with your own skills. Noe De Cominges Congratulations Lewis! Lewis started to learn the Javelin at Penair in the last Athletics season with the support of Mr Hocking and Mr Trivett where he had success winning events for the school with a PB of 32metres. Over summer he decided to attend Cornwall Athletics at Carn Brea and has been training twice a week to develop his technique, which is extremely complex. He has now competed in two throwing meets in Par and then Exeter and came first in both with a PB of just under 38m, the longest throw at U15s in Cornwall this year. He has also thrown over 40m at training, although has a long way to go in perfecting his technique. He also was fortunate to receive some extra training at Exeter from a highly regarded Javelin coach who gave Lewis some superb feedback. Whilst u15 until May, Lewis is now moving to the 700gramme Javelin (for the u17 age group) and will be attending weight training weekly out of season specifically for the Javelin. He is hoping to win his Cornwall vest next season and then see how far he can progress. Alongside of this Lewis continues to do well in his football, last season representing district and was extremely proud to have been selected for the full Cornwall squad. He has again this year been selected to the district squad with Alex Wilson and Cam Webb (there is no more Cornwall football until u18s) and scored two stunning goals and an assist on Tuesday away to Torbay, including a superb 35 yard free kick..

4 This weeks netball results v Falmouth - Thursday 13th October Year Penair Falmouth Year 8 Match report: Year 7 A Team Year 7 B Team In the match against Falmouth we came away with a great win of Everyone played really well, worked together at a team and stayed positive throughout. The player of the match was Ayana who played WA and WD. We would like to say a big thank you to Charlotte Pearne and Abi Wherry who helped umpire and coach. Year 8 Team Year 9 Team Netball v Penryn Friday 30th September Year 7 match report Penair v Mullian - Thursday 6th October Year 7 Penair 32-8 Mullian Year 8 18 Penair - 0 Mullian Year 9 Penair 26-0 Mullian Year 10 Penair 30-3 Mullian Year 11 Penair 18-6 Mullian On Friday Penair s Year 7 B team played a netball match against Penryn School. Penryn won 8-2 but we did very well despite not much practise. Lamorna Swan and Tilly Stephen scored our two goals although other were very close to scoring goals as well. Our defenders did well stopping the shooters getting the ball and passing it out to our C, WA and WD who then passed it on to our shooters. We rotated the positions a bit to suit our different strengths. We improved as a team throughout the game and with some more practise we will be a lot better. The players voted player of the match were Lily Beresford, Lamorna Swan and Tilly Stephen. Lily for her excellent defending, Lamorna for her goal scoring and centre play and the same for Tilly. Everyone else played amazingly well. Nuala, Phebe and Lowenna did some great centre play and Hannah and Rhiannon did great shooting and defending. Everyone played fantastically. I can t wait to see what our team will be like with some more practise. - by Matilda Stephen
