3 Introduction This booklet is designed to introduce elementary students to a basic concept of dance and art, using a popular theme. This booklet can be used in several ways: Independent activity Small group activity Small group activities lead by a teacher The first chapter is a literature study of the American Girl Isabelle book by Laurence Yep. Chapters two through five will introduce students to the basic dance steps, which will be used in choreography in chapter six. In chapter six, there are coloring sheets for the different steps in Ballet and Jazz dance and in chapter seven there are art projects inspired by dance. Chapters eight through twelve introduce aspects of theater. Chapter twelve is dances choreographed to music from the movie Isabelle Dances in the Spotlight. A video of these can be found on under Dance With Mrs. Heather. Choreography by American Girl UR Your Own Star is also broken down. Basic art supplies will be needed to complete some of the art projects. A supply list is provided for each activity. These can be purchased at your local craft store. 4 About the Author Mrs. Heather Tang Burbridge has been teaching dance and Art since She has taught art and dance in Virginia, Tennessee and New York. Mrs. Heather has also taught reading for the Oak Ridge school system and preschool in Tennessee. She started Dance with Me in order to teach her own children and now has the mission to make dance affordable for everyone. Mrs. Heather is internationally certified by the Imperial Society for the Teachers of Dance (ISTD) and a member of the National Dance Educators Organization (NDEO). Mrs. Heather has trained in ballet, tap, jazz, ballroom, theater arts and creative movement; as well as taught the Cultural Dance Program for the East Tennessee Chinese School. Previously, Mrs. Heather worked for the Virginia ballet and was the choreographer and artist director for the Thomas Nelson college dance team. Mrs. Heather also holds an associate degree in Fine Arts.
