4 Our Mission: To provide an avenue for residents of Salem, both young and old, to achieve a lifestyle of fitness, growth, joy and skill development while improving self worth and character. 5 I think when people first hear Parks & Recreation they think games, balls and playing around. In my fifteen years in the Recreation field I have learned that Parks & Recreation has a larger footprint than just fun and games. Recreation is about a community and its quality of life. It is about local business, its public health and safety. It s about positive experiences between adults and youth. It is a whole lot more than trying to build the next great athlete. This past year I have had three local mothers communicate the need for a positive experience for their child. I am sure these situations are not limited to the three, but maybe more prevalent than we may realize, here in Salem. Mother 1; expressed that her son was picked on and bullied at our local Jr. High. He had lost his desire to go to school; he didn t want to be put down anymore. Mother 2; shared that her son is picked on every day at the local elementary school. She signed her son up for one of our programs, but first wanted to make sure that this young boy was not also signed up for the same program. Her son would rather not play if he had to deal with him outside of school. Mother 3; has a daughter that likes sports, most of the girls her age at her elementary school prefer dance. Her daughter is told to play with the boys when she tries to interact with the girls. Leaving her daughter feeling left out and lonely. I share these examples as issues that we have here in our community. The parents of these children hurt for their children as they are picked on. They look for solutions and improvement in their children s lives. As the Recreation Director I see events like the Sandy Hook shootings and wonder how similar that community is to ours. I hope that we are different; I hope that we can hear a call for help and give the attention needed. What are we (The City) doing to help these issues? As a City we strive to monitor possible trouble situations. We communicate between departments, Recreation to Police to Schools. We look for kids who can help put an arm around those in need of a friend and we challenge them to do so. The Mayor is starting a Mayors Youth Council to approach topics that are of importance to the youth of Salem. We hope to motivate a movement of friendship. What can you do to help these issues? Be involved, talk to your kids about their day. Ask questions to make sure things really are good in their lives. Don t be afraid to ask the deep questions, could your child be the one that picks on others? Salem is a great community; it is a great place to raise a family. I am excited to be part of this community. To serve, to get to know your families and provide enjoyable activities for them. It is my goal to help your family enjoy Salem. 6 In the summer of 2011 I left my previous career in the banking industry to attend to the needs of my family. I enjoyed working in that field a great deal, it was difficult to leave. Having always worked I wanted to find something part time. I read a quote by Maya Angelou that said I ve learned that making a living is not the same as making a life. If one is not working for monetary gain the other rewards you get from working become more important. I was very excited to get this job. I grew up here and love Salem in a melancholy, ridiculous, and embarrassingly cheesy way. I love working with the recreation department, I get to work with a director that truly cares about kids, a mayor that really loves Salem and worries about every detail in running this city, and I get to work with a lot of great parents and kids which make this the great city that it is. For those of you that grew up here and chose to stay and raise your families, you re awesome, we must think alike. For those of you who are new, welcome, I hope you jump in with both feet and submerse yourself in all the great things we have here, and I hope you come to consider Salem home. When Aaron Cloward ran for city council, at meet the candidate night he said that as a child his favorite things growing up were Christmas, Fiesta Days on the 24 th of July and Salem Days. I agree, Salem Days as well as participating in the other activities we offer as a recreation department are great ways to help make and enjoy our community. Jen Wright I have worked in the Salem Recreation Department for 6 years and I can honestly say that I love my job. As a lifelong resident of Salem, I have a lot of community spirit and a strong love for our city. When Salem was still a tiny little town, my parents were involved with the building of our Veterans Ball Park and Snack Shack, and my brothers helped build the Loafer View Ball Park as their Eagle Projects. I volunteer as an EMT for Salem s Ambulance and my husband is a volunteer firefighter. Working for the city in the Recreation Department is another way for me to enjoy serving, and be involved with our community. I love working with our residents and youth of Salem. I have a lot of fun with our activities that entertain as well as build valuable life skills. Recreation is FUN and it also teaches values such as responsibility, respect, camaraderie, pride and sportsmanship. Salem isn t a tiny little town anymore, but we have a wonderful mayor, city managers and a director that still have those small town values. We strive to offer fun and educational programs that make our beautiful little city the best it can be. Michelle McKean

7 Indoor Soccer 4 divisions will be offered this year for youth that want to play indoor 4vs.4 indoor soccer. Game will be played Saturdays. Scheduled will not conflict with the same age group of basketball. The 4 vs. 4 format is set up to stimulate passing and quick ball movements. No goalie is allowed to simulate scoring and scoring attempts. It is a fast paced sport, similar to South American Futsal. Cost per participate is $30.00, a team indoor soccer t-shirt will be included in the registration cost. A $5.00 non-resident fee will be charged for this program. Divisions will be: Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1 st & 2 nd grade, 3 rd & 4 th grades and 5 th & 6 th grades. Signups in December. Late registration after December 27 th. Winter Snow Softball Tournament What is your family doing to ring in the New Year? Come play softball with us. Saturday, December 29 th. Form up a snow softball team and come play in the Third annual Salem Snowman Softball Tournament. Yes, that is right, softball in the snow. Salem Parks and Rec. will sponsor the first tournament of the year. Cost is $150 per team. Teams are guaranteed 3 games and plenty of warm hot chocolate. Teams may be made up of men, women or mixed. The event is about fun. Teams must be registered by Thursday, December 27 th. Wood bats are used. Salem City will supply 1 bat per field. Soaring Hoopsters Basketball A fun introductory basketball program for 1 st & 2 nd grade boys and girls. This program is a clinic style program using fun activities to teach proper mechanics and skills. This program helps young players progress in their basketball development. Hoopsters is a 5 week 10 session program, beginning Jan 8 th. Sessions will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Salem Elementary. Two sessions are offered, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Space is limited to 32 spots per session. First session will be January 8 th. Early Registration Dates: January 4 th, 2012 at the Recreation Office. There is a $5.00 late fee assessed after January 4th. Registration Fee $30.00 T-shirt is included in registration fee.

8 Vipers Wrestling This is a competitive team that will work to improve skills while competing against top wrestlers throughout the state. The team will travel throughout Utah County as well as host two or three home duals. Wrestlers that desire to wrestle in weekend tournaments will need to purchase their own USA Wrestling Card. Practice will be held twice a week starting January 8th. Cost to register is $35.00 if paid by January 4 th. A $5.00 non resident fee will be charged to all wrestlers living outside of Salem City. This is a great place for kids that are excited about wrestling. Grades 1 st through 6 th Salem Catchers Skills Camp 2013 Salem Recreation is excited to offer a one day (Feb. 9 th ) skill development and drill camp. The camp will be instructed by former BYU catcher Casey Cloward. The camp will be 1 hour and 30 minute session. Focus will cover drills that the youth can take back to practice as they work to become a more complete catcher. Camp will be held at the SHHS Wrestling Room from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Cost for this camp is $15.00 Space is limited so register today at the Salem Recreation office. Little Girls Dance classes Salem Recreation New! Introduction to Dance will be offered for little girls Kindergarten to 2 nd grade. The class will be a Wednesday/Thursday schedule from 5:30 to 6:30p.m. Eight sessions will be offered. We are excited to have Rebekah Anderson as our new instructor. Cost for this program is $30 a $5.00 non resident fee will be charged for this program. Early registration deadline is February 13th. The first class will be held on Wednesday, February 20th. This is a great place for little ones to find their love for dance. This program will be held at Foothills Elementary on the stage in the Auditorium. Please enter thru the South West Gym door. 9 Salem Recreation & SHHS Football will offer 2 or 3 free winter workouts. Please look online for these dates. We encourage boys 6 th 9 th grade that are interested in playing football to attend. Come work on the little things so when the season starts we can accomplish big things! YOUTH SPRING SOCCER Once the weather breaks it is soccer season. Recreational youth spring soccer will be a 5 week season, starting mid April and finishing in May. All leagues will play 2 games a week, Wednesdays & Friday evenings. Team sizes will be smaller to allow more playing time and less field congestion. Most age groups will play 6 on 6 soccer, some 7 on 7. Early Registration Dates: March 20 th at the Recreation Office. There is a $5.00 late fee assessed after March 20 th, Coaches Meeting: Wednesday, March 27 th. Leagues: Pre K $25.00 (Tuesday & Thursday games) Kindergarten $ st & 2 nd Grades $ rd & 4 th Grades $ th & 7 th Grades $30.00 All players will need a game jersey. Jerseys maybe re-used year to year. Jersey s are sold for $10.00 at the recreation office. New! Pre-Kinder Soccer Due to many requests we are offering a soccer league for kids 4 and 5 years of age that are not enrolled in kindergarten. The league will take the place of our Spring Little Kickers program. Players will be divided on small teams and play 6 vs. 6 soccer. Coaches will be issued starter drills with their equipment bags. Games for this league will be played on Tuesday & Thursday evenings. Registration deadline will be March 20th. Cost to play is $25.00 per player. Each player will need a Salem Youth Soccer Jersey. Jerseys can be purchased for $10.00 at the Recreation Office. Salem Rec. Jerseys are re-used every season your child plays soccer with us.

10 Urban Fishing PROGRAM The Youth Fishing Program is open to youth in the following grades: 1 st to 6 th grades. This program is a joint venture between Salem Recreation and the Division of Wildlife Resource. The program focuses on educating youth about fishing and aquatic resources. The first class will be held at the Veterans Memorial Ballpark (downtown). All other classes will be held at Salem Pond. First session will be April 3 rd. Registration for this program will be $15.00 if paid before the early deadline. Each participant should provide their own pole. This is a 6 week program. All participants will receive a Salem Fishing Club t-shirt. Registration for Youth Fishing Program: Before March 20 th at the Salem Recreation office. An adult instructor will work with and supervise participants. The first 30 minutes will be spent learning fishing techniques and habitat needs. The remaining time will be spent FISHING! WE ARE LOOKING FOR ADULTS THAT WOULD LIKE TO HELP INSTRUCT AND TEACH KIDS HOW TO FISH. PLEASE CALL IF YOU WOULD ENJOY HELPING There will be an instructors meeting March 19 7:30 p.m. for all instructors. The meeting will be held at the Recreation Office. (All hours from this program may be used toward your Dedicated Hunter Hours.) YOUTH BASEBALL & SOFTBALL Youth Baseball & Softball is for boys and girls 3 rd to 12 th grades. Registration: On or before March 28 th at the Salem Recreation Office or online. (PICTURES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN FEE). Leagues are divided by gender and age group. After teams have been drafted, registration will be accepted on a space availability basis. Get in early! Boys and Girls -3 rd to 8 th grades - league will play the majority of their games Tuesday thru Thursday evenings. Phoenix and Colt Leagues will play games Monday thru Thursday. Players must play in leagues that pertain to their grade. Players will not be allowed to play up in any age group. If the Weather is wet we will move tryouts indoors, check on line at for location. T-Ball & Coach Pitch Early Registration deadline is Thursday, April 25 th. Kindergarten boys and girls will play t-ball. Kindergartners will have a boy s league as well as a girl s league. 1 st and 2 nd graders will also play in gender specific leagues. Coaches will pitch to players in both leagues. Coaches meetings will be held Thursday, May 2 nd. Games for these leagues will be played on Wednesday and Friday evenings.

12 Pre Kindergarten Baseball Start Smart Baseball Early Registration deadline is Wednesday, May 1 st $30 includes shirt and hat. Start Smart baseball is a clinic style program organized to teach proper skills vital to baseball and softball. This program requires the accompaniment of a parent or sibling over 15 years of age. This is a 9 session program with a different focus at each session. Program begins May 9th. Participants will learn to throw, catch and hit in a safe and fun atmosphere. The final 6 sessions will include scrimmage games. This will be a Tuesday / Thursday evening program, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. This is where ever big leaguer should start their career! New! Adult and teen fly fishing classes. Have you ever want to learn the art of Fly fishing. Now is your chance. We are excited to offer a course where you learn right here on our own pond. We have found local fish guru and former professional fly fishing guide, Patrick Hogle. Patrick has agreed to teach two 3 week sessions, 6 total classes per session. Instruction will cover the philosophy of fly fishing, the importance of presentation and on hand casting and fishing. Space is limited to 6 participants per session. Cost is $35.00 per person. Sign up early as space is limited. Classes will be held evening 6:30 to 8:00p, Wednesday and Friday evenings. All participants must be 15 years of age or older. Session one: May 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 & 31 Session two: June 5, 7, 12, 14, 19 & 21 Participants must have a valid fishing license. If you do not have fly fishing gear, Patrick has some gear he will lend out. He suggests holding off on buying equipment until you learn to fish and he can give you some tips.

13 Salem Youth Track Club Salem Recreation will sponsor a youth track club for boys and girls 2 nd to 8 th grade. This club will practice 2 to 3 times a week and participate in meets against clubs from all over Utah County. Practices will be held at Salem Hills High School beginning May 7th. Meets will be held in various Utah County cities, and be the responsibility of parents to transport their child to and fro. Registration for this program is $40 and includes a track club t-shirt. Early registration deadline is May 3 rd. First practice will be held on May 7 th. Hershey Track Dates: 3 rd / 4 th grade Hershey Track date will be Tuesday, April 30th. Events are scheduled to start at 9:15 a.m. and conclude around 1:00 p.m. The three Salem Elementary Schools and Liberty Academy will participate. 5 th / 6 th grade Dates: Tuesday, May 7 th. Events are scheduled to start at 9:15 a.m. and conclude around 1:00 p.m. Both grades will complete each event prior to moving to the next event. A rainout make-up day will be held May 9 th, if needed. Salem Spring Training Tournament April 16 th,17 th, 18 th & 19 th (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday) Championship on Friday Salem, Utah Early Fee: $ per team If received by April, 5 th. Regular Fee $ game guarantee All games will be afternoon and evenings. 2 games per night, earliest start 4:00 p.m. 6 age groups: 8u, 9u, 10u, 11u, 12u, 13u & 14u age Championship play - Friday, April 19 th Registration Deadline: April 5th - you may commit by prior to registration.

14 Adult Spring Coed Softball Adult teams comprised of men and women will step to the plate Wednesday evenings at Loafer View Park. Teams will play a 12 game schedule over 8 weeks. Some evenings will include double header action. Space is available for 18 teams, which will be split into two leagues based on skill level and desired competition level. Rosters will allow 16 players per team. All players must be listed on the team roster in-order to play in games. League play will begin Wednesday, April 17 th. A post season tournament will complete the season. Team organizational meeting will be held April 16 th at 8:00p.m. At Loafer View Park score tower. Teams that have a rep. present will receive two additional practices games. Men s Spring Softball Thursday Nights will include a men s slow pitch softball league. No more of these death blister bats. Bring your USSSA Certified bat and come play softball. Men s league will play 12 games plus post season tournament. Get your team registered today. 1 up homerun rule. Team organizational meeting will be held April 16 th at 8:30p.m. at Loafer View Park scores tower. Teams that have a rep. present will receive two additional practices games. We want your team! Registration Dates: Early registration will take place on or before April 8 th. Registration fee is $365 per team with $5.00 Non resident fees charged for all non Salem residents. Non-Resident fee will have a $25 cap per team. Salem Days Coed Softball Tournament Mark your calendar now for the famous Salem Days Softball Tournament. This coed tournament continues to be a favorite of local teams as well as visiting teams. This year we will offer an open division and a family division! We think that will provide more softball fun for everyone! Tournament dates are August 8 th & 9 th, with all games played at Loafer View Recreational Complex. Team fee is $150 per team and should be paid prior to August 3 rd. Get the team ready and come play. This is a non sanctioned tournament. Teams registered for Salem Fall League pay $100.00

Skill development will be the main focus while rules and game format are taught. Two age based classes will be offered; K - 3 rd grade and 4 th - 6 th. Equipment (balls & youth racquets) for this program will be provided by Salem Parks & Recreation. This program will meet on the Salem Hills High School Tennis Courts. Participants will receive a T-shirt and Ten 1 hour classes. Registration fee is: $35.00, space is limited. Early registration deadline is May 20 th. $5.00 late fee will be added. $5.00 non-resident fee will be charged for this program. K to 3 rd grade = 9:00 to 10:00 am 4 th to 6 th grade = 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Session 1 June 3 rd - 14 th (weekdays) Session 2 July 8 th 19 th (weekdays) Fall Session August Tennis Court Lights: You may now play tennis into the late hours of the spring and summer. The light system works well, making it so that Salem residents can enjoy evening tennis. Lights will be available for users from April 1 st to Mid October. The system is set on a timer to allow the Recreation department to control when lights will be available. The usage window has been set for dusk to 10:30 p.m. Users may go to the courts in this window and push the court lights button to turn their desired courts lights on. Once the button has been pushed (located at the west entrance) the light will work for 1 hour. After 55 minutes of usage a strobe light will begin to flash. The court user will then have 5 minutes to hit the button again or the lights will go out. If the button is hit again the lights will run for another hour. So get out and play, we suggest you make it a family activity. Salem Easter Egg Hunt 1-10 year old boys & girls The 2012 Easter Egg Hunt will take place Saturday, March 30 th at Loafer View Recreation Complex. Hunt will begin at 9:00am sharp, so come early. Fields will be divided into age groups.

16 4-H Salem Youth 4-H is for youth 5 years of age and up. The program will be focused around horsemanship. This program is designed to provide experiences to help develop leadership, citizenship, self esteem, social skills and to become contributing members of society, as well as better horsemen and women. Registration is $15. All participants need to register prior to the April 17th start date and will meet every Tuesday & Thursday. All participants must have their own well broke and gentle horse and be able to ride without assistance. First class will be Thursday, April 19 th. Girls Softball Camp June 3 rd -6 th, for Girls 3 rd -9 th grade. This 4 day camp will be instructed by Coaching Staff from Salem Hills High School. Focus will be pitching, hitting and fielding. This camp will be held at Loafer View Recreation Complex. Registration fee is $25 (shirt included). $5 late fee after June 1 st. 2:00p to 3:30p Boys Baseball Camp June 3 rd -6 th, for Boys 2 nd -8 th grade. This 4 day camp will be instructed by Coach Scott Haney and his staff. Focus will be pitching, hitting and fielding. This camp will be held at Veteran s Memorial Park (downtown). Registration fee is $25 (shirt included). $5 late fee after June 1 st. Two age groups 2 nd to 4 th graders 10:30 to Noon. 5 th to 8 th 9:00a to 10:30a. Rugby Camp One week of training and play. June 24 th 28 th Is it time for your boys to try something new? Are they Forever Strong? Salem Recreation is excited to offer a 5 day intro to Rugby Camp. The Camp will be instructed by former South African Rugby players; David and Theral Ledward. Salem Recreation is exited to offer the camp to our community youth. It is a safe and strategic game. 17 Summer Day Hike- JUNE 13 th. Mark your calendars for Salem Parks & Recreation s 4th annual Hike. This year s hike will be a climb of Y Mountain in Provo. The hike is for everyone 10 years and older, parents are welcome to sign up as well. The hike will be organized as a day camp with lunch provide by Salem Gandolfo s. Educational information will also be shared at the summit of the trial. This hike is part of the Salem Youth against Obesity Challenge. Registration is $10 (lunch included). $5 late fee after June 10 th. Space is limited to 20 youth so sign up early. Kids Craft Camp- June 10 th -14 th Two sessions: 1 st - 9:00-10:30am. 2 nd 10:45a.m. to 12:15p.m. For youth ages 6 years and older. This camp is a great opportunity to get your youth off the couch during the summer and have them learn something fun and new. Each day they will work on a new project: Porcelain figurines, wood, painting, and general hand crafts. Veteran s Memorial Park. All crafts and supplies will be included in the registration fee of $25. $5 late fee after June 6 th. Space is limited so sign up early. Adult Fall Coed Softball Adult teams comprised of men and women will step up to the plate Wednesday evenings at Loafer View Park. Teams will play a 12 game schedule over 9 weeks. Most evenings will include double header action. Space is available for 18 teams, which will be split into two leagues based on skill level and desired competition level. All teams must have a representative present at the league organizational meeting July 23 rd at 8:00pm at Loafer View Complex. Rosters will allow 16 players per team. All players must be listed on the team roster in order to play in games. A few changes from years past, you spoke, we listened. While league play will be held on Wednesday nights the 2 practice games will be held on a Friday, July 26 th. League play will begin July 31 st. These changes have been made in order to shorten the season by 2 weeks, we understand playing to late into October gets a little chilly! Let us know if you like the changes, your feedback helps us build a better league for all! A post season tournament will complete the season. Registration fee is $ per team. $25 late fee after July 17 th. $5 non-resident fee up to $25.

18 Salem Men s Wood Bat Baseball Salem Parks & Rec. will offer a men s 21 and older men s wood bat league. Games will be played at Salem Loafer View Complex Monday, Tuesday & Thursday evenings. Teams interested in playing should contact Salem Parks & Rec. no later than June 14 th. Cost is $900 per team. Fees are due June 25th. First games will be played July 9 th. 10 game season with top two teams playing a post season 3 game series. Game times will be 2 hours or 7 inning games. North UC teams will play Double Headers. All teams will play two games per week. One wood bat will be issued to each registered team. All other bats are up to the teams. Football Youth Tackle Football 6 th -8 th Grade Salem will offer recreation tackle football for grades 6 th -8 th. These age groups will participate in grade specific teams that compete in the Nebo Football league. The league is made up of teams from Salem, Spanish Fork, Springville and Payson. Each team will play 10 league games which will begin in late August. All players will be included in the tackle football camp as part of their league registration. Team selection will take place the first week of August. This is a great league to start your football experience. Registration fee is $100 - $5 late fee after July 19 th. $5 nonresident fee. $5 Camp Shirt is optional, if purchased it will get your participating youth into all Salem Hills High School home FOOTBALL games for free!

19 6 th -9 th Grade Tackle Football Camp Salem Hills High Football Staff will run an eight day conditioning and skills camp for all Salem youth tackle football players. Camp is included as part of the registration fee and a must to be prepared for the season. Camp dates are July 30 th to August 8 th, weekdays at Loafer View Complex. 9:00-11:00am daily. $5 Camp Shirt is optional, if purchased it will get your participating youth into all Salem Hills High School home FOOTBALL games for free! 9 th Grade Freshman Football 2013 will be our 6th year of 9 th grade Skyhawk football. Young men that desire to play should make contact with Salem Recreation for information about conditioning and weight lifting. The team will participate in the Utah County Cougar Conference. Registration fee is $145 (practice jersey included). $5 late fee after July 19 th. $5 non-resident fee. 1 st & 2 nd Grade Flag Football This league will be for youth going into 1 st & 2 nd grades. The league will be set up with the goal of teaching football skills and philosophy. Teams will play games twice a week, Wednesday & Fridays evenings. Prior to each game a skills work out will take place for 10 minutes. Workouts will be focused on catching, throwing and flag pulling. Volunteer Coaches are needed. League play will begin September 14th. Registration fee is $30. $5 late fee after August 29th. $5 non-resident fee. 1 st & 2 nd grade soccer will not conflict with this program. Women s Flag Football Mom s it is time to show your little ones how to play. This league will play Tuesday evenings starting in September and finishing the end of October. All players must be out of high school. Tackling, blocking and physical contact will be strongly regulated. Get your friends together and form a team. 8 players will be on the field for each team. Team registration fee is $ games and playoffs. Early Registration deadline is September 11 th with a mandatory coaches meeting on September 17 th, 8:00pm at the Recreation office. A $5.00 non-resident fee up to $25.

20 6 th -8 th Cheerleading Salem Parks & Recreation is hosting our 2 nd season of girls cheer. Last year we were pleased to fill a team in each grade for our Fall Cheer. With the success of last year s program we are ready to take a few more progressive steps forward while keeping the program affordable. The Cheer squads will be organized by grade and assigned to a Salem youth football team. Practice will start the first week of August and conclude the end of the Tackle football season which is about the middle of October. The program will include a weekly practice and two city football games per week. The program will include instruction of cheers, jumps and routines. Cheerleaders will be cheering for their own grade level football teams. Cheer uniforms will include two shirts that the girls will keep. The City will purchase and check out cheer skirts for the season. Skirts will be turned in at the end of the season. Quality pom poms will be included in the registration fee. Registration fee: $65 for 6 th 8 th graders. Cheer Mons are needed. Salem Recreation will provide a cheer coach for instruction and practices. Early registration deadline is July 19 th. 24 Salem Adopt a Tree Program Salem Parks & Recreation will sponsor the 4th annual family adopt a tree day. This program is set up to allow families or donors to purchase a tree -15 to 20 feet tall - that will be planted at one of the ball parks located here in Salem. Cost per tree is $250 and will include a marker that will be placed at the base of the tree to commemorate or memorialize the tree donor. This program is a great opportunity to beautify our parks while starting a family tradition / heritage. Trees will be planted the first week of November, with holes being prepared by Salem City Parks crews. Trees will be purchased by the City Parks Department and delivered to designated locations. Families will have the option to plant their tree or have the City Parks Crew do it for them. Most games will be played at the New Salem Jr. High. The SHHS Aux gym will also be used. The league will be divided into three division of play, On Wednesday evenings. An open league will also be offered on Tuesday evenings. 8 spots will be available in each league. Teams should sign up in the league that is appropriate to their team s ability. All players must be out of High School and at least 18 years of age. Fees per team Cost will be $445 per team if paid by Tuesday, October 15 th. 25 Soaring Hoopsters - 1 st & 2 nd Grade Basketball Soaring Hoopsters Fall Session will be available for boys and Girls who are in 1st and 2nd grade. This is a clinic style Introductory program using fun activities to teach proper mechanics and skills. The program helps young players progress in their basketball development. This 5 week program will begin Nov. 5 th at Salem Elementary School. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 1 hour. There will be one session at 6: spots available. Early registration deadline is October 25th. Cost will be $30.00 (includes T-shirt) space is limited, so be sure to register early. Coat and Food Drive We are once again take food and coat donations at the Salem Recreation Office. Our drive will begin November 1st, come give to those in need. Saturday session will be a morning session 9:00a to 10:30a Register online. Campers who register by December 2 nd will receive a Salem Hills basketball t-shirt at camp. Winter Snowman Softball Tournament What is your family doing over Christmas break? Form up a snow softball team and come play in the fifth annual Salem Snowman Softball Tournament. Yes, that is right, softball in the snow. Salem Parks and Rec. will sponsor the first tournament of the year. Cost is $150 per team. Teams are guaranteed 3 games and plenty of hot chocolate & donuts. Teams may be made up of men, women or mixed. The event is about fun. Teams must be registered by Tuesday, December 23 th. Wood bats are used. Salem City will supply 1 bat per field. Games will be played Saturday, December 28 th at Salem Loafer View Park. Come join the fun. Salem Riding Arena Groups or clubs interested in using the Salem Riding Arena should contact the Salem Recreation Office or (click on the Parks & Recreation link, scroll to the bottom of the page, click on rental information, click on Rodeo Arena Rental Info) for user information as well as rental rates. Riding clubs, roping clubs and renters must have a group insurance policy prior to rental of the facility. A free riding time will be available to Salem Residents Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During this time block riders may ride and work out their horses. No roping or poles will be allowed during the riding block.

27 Coaches Discount Policy Salem Parks & Recreation offers various youth sports programs. Each program is organized and maintained by recreation staff. Coaching for all youth sports is done by volunteer coaches. Coaches are selected from a pool of volunteers, including solicitations of parents. All coaches must pass a back ground check prior to serving as a volunteer. Volunteer coaches will receive a voucher at the conclusion of the sport coached. These vouchers can be used for future registrations. The amount of the voucher is dictated by the sport each volunteer coaches. $20 voucher will be issued for all programs with an early registration fee of $25 or less. $30 voucher will be issued for all programs will an early fee cost of $26 or more. The voucher system is by no means an avenue for payment or compensation of the coach s time. It is a simple thank you and acknowledgement of the coach s time and efforts. It is our belief that the majority of coaches volunteer to spend time with their child as well as the youth of our community. Non Resident Fees A $5.00 non resident fee will be charged for all programs, except camps. Non residents are individuals that do not live inside Salem City Limits. Residents are also those that do not pay property taxes to Salem City. Our programs are subsidized by city property tax dollars. Thank you for your help and support with our programs. Salem City Green Waste 751 West Arrowhead Salem, Utah Salem City continues to strive to offer programs that are of value to Salem City Residents. We have made a few changes to how our City Green Waste site will be managed. We have installed security cameras to help us track who is using the green waste drop off. The drop off is a service to Salem Residents and is provided without a users fee. The drop off is not available to non-salem residents. We are also adding a screening process to use the site. We ask residents to bring a Drivers License with their Salem address on it with them, or a current City bill. The gate will now be staffed during the hours of operation. Operating hours will be: Mondays: 4:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. Wednesday: 4:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. Saturdays: 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. Seasonal dates of service are; April 1 st to October 31 st

Salem Parks & Recreation Travel teams and Accelerated Sports There are a lot of different options when it comes to activities for our Salem Youth to be involved in. There are recreation programs offered by the community. There are travel clubs and teams in almost all sports. Finding somewhere to play sports is not a challenge. The reason we play sports and where is the issue I hope to address. Salem Recreation Sports programs are offered to invite our local youth to be active, healthy, involved in activities with their peers and hopefully to teach some values and life skills. The goal has never been to build the next great High School athletics star, and certainly not the next professional athlete. If either of these result come from the programs then it is just another plus. We do strive to offer challenging programs where a young athlete will feel challenged and possible find a deep desire to work to improve their skills. In truth high school success may not be one of our focuses, but it is most certainly our desire. We want to help Salem Hills High School succeed and bring success to their programs and our community. The many different travel teams also set goals to help their participants learn valuable life skills. Many travel teams work to develop skills that will help their players find success in the next level of sports. That would be on High School teams. This is a great adventure that many of our local families have entered. At Salem Recreation our goal is not to hinder these pursuits. We support meaningful, structured and goal oriented recreation. While working to support clubs and travel teams, our number one goal is to focus on City offered programs and City facilities. We build, prepare and maintain the City athletic facilities for our programs first. We then find ways to allow non city programs to rent our facilities to allow their teams to play some games close to home. It is important to remember that City Parks are built and maintained with tax dollars, taxes of our Salem residents. When non city programs use the facilities for games a rental fee is charged for usage. These fees are charged to help cover the maintenance of the parks.

30 We often hear parents say that, their child does not play city rec. sports because it makes their child regress. When I hear these statements it makes me ill. City sports do not make anyone a lesser athlete. City programs offer a field of play for all skill levels. What effort is offered by each individual participant is what makes the experience worthwhile or not. We subscribe to the idea that the more reps and playing time an athlete puts in the better they become. Now to the goal of this article, Salem Recreation wants your child to play with us. We want them to play whether they play on a travel team or not. Why? We want our community youth to grow together. We want them to build relationships with each other. We want them to have experiences together. We want them to have a common ground with multiple members of our community. Not a same group that they spend the majority of their time with. We want every child in this community to feel they have self worth and friends here in Salem. We hope that as the youth grow and find other interest, they do not feel they are alone in life. Once they have stopped the pursuit of a certain sport. We believe that recreational programs introduce various groups of kids to one another. We keep them low for families who have tight budgets. We keep them low so that family who are paying hundreds to a club or team can still play in our league at a small cost.
