Celebrating the Gifts of Every Child Georgia Casual Week Please help us spread the word about Georgia Casual Week, February This week, proclaimed by Governor Nathan Deal, is set aside each year for businesses, schools, and organizations to help support the Georgia Academy for the Blind. During the week, the businesses allow their employees to dress casual at work in return for a small donation from each employee to GAB ($5 $10). All donations go directly to our student fund to support programs and special activities for our students. Please help spread the word to local businesses in your area. 3 We hosted the G.A.B. Wrestling Weekend this past weekend. Friday night, the Mississippi and the Alabama schools for the blind wrestlers and cheerleaders joined us for supper and social time. Saturday morning, wrestlers from Georgia Military College joined the rest of us for a full day of wrestling. GMC brought a color guard to participate in opening ceremonies. An ensemble of cheerleaders from the Mississippi and Alabama schools sang the National Anthem. Twenty-three cheerleaders from Mississippi and Alabama performed several opening cheers. Results from the wrestling matches: of 14 weight classes, Alabama won seven Best Wrestler in Class trophies, along with the Best Team plaque. G.A.B. came in second by securing four Best Wrestler trophies. Josh Jones posted three victories to win the Best Wrestler trophy in the 132- pound class. Daniel Collins defeated his Alabama opponent to win the 152-pound class, and Johnny Youngblood won the 170-pound class. Billy Barker lost an exhibition match against an Alabama wrestler, but earned the Best Wrestler in the 220-pound class by defeating his G.M.C. opponent with a pin. Other G.A.B. wrestlers included Davon Bumper, who lost to Mississippi and Alabama opponents; Late Lawson, who defeated his Alabama opponent with a pin; DeAngelo Willis, who lost to his Mississippi opponent but defeated his Alabama opponent; and Anthony White, who lost by a pin to his Alabama opponent. Special thanks to Mr. Reynolds who worked hard to provide lots of great food for all the participants; to Mrs. Pope, Mrs. Hudgins, and Ms. Denise Lamar, who helped serve meals; Coach Watkins, who kept score; and all the former and current G.A.B. staff who came to cheer us on. Also, thanks to Arienne Moore who served as a great hostess for the visiting cheerleaders both on Friday evening and Saturday. She made our guests feel welcome by helping the guests find their way and sharing meals SEASON OF THE SENSES What: A fun and educational short course weekend at the Georgia Academy for the Blind (GAB). We will celebrate our senses while focusing on Expanded Core Curriculum skills that will be incorporated into: Horseback riding, if possible Home safety, and first aid scavenger hunts Time with a guest speaker who will talk about Envisioning the World Food preparation sessions Assistive technology hands-on classes Our almost world-famous Singing Bee Many other fun and educational activities Date: February 10-12, 2012 Time: 4:00 pm Friday the 10th until 3:00 pm Sunday the 12th Ages: years Cost: Free *Transportation Not Provided* Applications are due by Monday, Feb 6th. Space and resources are limited, so all students who apply will be notified early next week if they have been selected to participate.

4 Parents Helping Their Students Celebrate Their Gifts We are attempting to increase the connection between the school, home and child by instituting a plan that will allow you to participate in your child s learning experience at GAB in a unique manner. Twice a month you will receive this form to complete and return to your student s teacher. As an incentive to increase participation for each returned form the student s name will be placed in a drawing for a monetary prize.
