2 Kearney High Wrestling Coaching Philosophy Wrestling is a sport that demands dedication, perseverance, and resiliency. Focusing on these attributes helps to open outstanding opportunities for student learning and development. It is the responsibility of the coach to foster an environment that not only develops well-rounded student-athletes, but also future leaders in our communities. A successful wrestling program is able to incorporate the instruction and technique from the sport of wrestling, while maintaining a cohesive teamwork mindset. This team attitude helps to create a family atmosphere for studentathletes to develop within. As a coach, I dedicate my efforts to developing student-athletes who are prepared not only for our beloved sport of wrestling, but also for future challenges they may encounter in life. Athletes should feel a sense of pride and ownership in their endeavors. This is achieved through relationships and structure within the program. I encourage family involvement and support into our wrestling team. This involvement strengthens our team mission and vision. It is of the utmost importance that all members of our wrestling family are invested in the philosophy and direction of the program. This establishes consistency in all areas of the student-athlete s life. Bearcat wrestlers and coaches will embrace our Championship Principles. These principles serve as guidelines for how we as a family should conduct ourselves in all situations. By following the Championship Principles we as a team will uphold high standards for each other regardless of the challenge. The sport of wrestling upholds the values and characteristics of the men we strive to be in life. We, together, will hold each other accountable to these standards. Through our wrestling journey, we will develop strength and honor together towards our common goal of being Champions in Life.

3 Kearney High Wrestling General Mission: As members of the Kearney High School wrestling team we represent ourselves, the school, and community. Our decisions, choices, and performance as student-athletes and coaches will have a direct impact on our team and the reputation of our wrestling program. It is of the utmost importance that we all strive to make a positive statement about our program to impact the success and future of our program. Team Mission Statement: The Kearney High School Wrestling Team, a family of young men, built by the strength of its individuals, will continue a tradition of success by committing our strengths to a dominate performance in all phases of life s journey. Coaching Staff Mission: The Kearney High School coaching staff wants for you, what you want for yourself. Our commitment and energy to get every student-athlete to reach his goals is of the utmost importance. We will treat all athletes as adults who are capable of learning how to make good decisions. Our focus on the family, positive attitudes, individual and team routines, and academic and athletic performance will help guide you to be the best and prepare you to face all the challenges in life. Athletic Department Policy: You are expected to adhere to all Kearney High School Athletic Department policies. Rules and punishments for player conduct will not be listed since most circumstances are unique to themselves. Those who make decisions and choices, which negatively impact the reputation of the Kearney High wrestling program, will face consequences as determined by the athletic department and coaching staff. The Code of Conduct is intended to communicate our expectations regarding your conduct as a Bearcat Wrestler.

4 Bearcat Wrestling Code of Conduct Code of Conduct Our conduct, both on and off the mat, creates our identity, it establishes expectations for future generations, and ultimately will help our program develop the integrity in which we can all be proud of. The following expectations will help you become the champion in life. Remember, your identity is that of a Bearcat Wrestler. Conduct on the Mat: 1. Be on time to practice, matches, meetings, and all wrestling related activities. 2. Be a good practice partner. 3. Respect all coaches, teammates, officials, and opponents. 4. Look, act, and perform like a member of a first class program at all times. 5. Be a competitor. 6. Maintain a positive attitude 7. Be a team player. 8. Be a student of the game. 9. Work toward becoming the best YOU can be. 10. ASK when you are uncertain as to what is expected of you. Conduct off the Mat: 1. Represent the program, school, and community in a positive manner at all times. 2. Keep healthy sleeping and eating habits. 3. Be a good citizen 4. Avoid the use of illegal substances. 5. Be aware of the company you keep and where you keep it at. 6. Work to socialize with team members. 7. Follow all Athletic Department and team rules. 8. Maintain a personal relationship in a mature manner which does not interfere with you or your teammates academic and athletic performance. 9. Treat others around you as you would like to be treated. 10. ASK when uncertain as to what is expected OFF THE MAT. Conduct in the Classroom: 1. GO TO CLASS, (prepared and on time). 2. Uphold a mature and scholarly attitude while in the classroom. 3. Inform the head coach upon realizing a problem in the classroom. 4. Look, act, and perform like a member of a first class program at all times in the classroom. 5. Take pride in achieving team academic goals. 6. Strive to become the best YOU can be in the classroom. 7. GRADUATE! 8. Respect all teachers, counselors, and administrators. 9. ASK when uncertain about what is expected IN THE CLASSROOM.

5 Bearcat Wrestling Code of Conduct Wrestling Practice Policies: 1. Always be present and on time. NO EXCUSES! 2. Call, text, or if you are sick or have a family or personal emergency. 3. Come to practice prepared. YOU PLAY LIKE YOU PRACTICE! Work with a controlled intensity. Be calm, cool, confident, and positive. 4. When technique is being shown, everyone is expected to stand. 5. The coaching staff will be in charge of music during practice. 6. Always wear appropriate practice attire. 7. If you are injured and cannot practice, you are expected to be at every meeting and to observe practice unless excused by the head coach. 8. Fighting or harassment will not be tolerated. 9. Your comments should be constructive and helpful. Be a player-coach to your teammates. 10. Be mentally alert at all times. Mental mistakes will hurt you a lot quicker than any physical mismatch. Alcohol and Drug Use Policy: 1. Drinking alcohol will not be tolerated at any time. 2. Drug and tobacco use will not be tolerated at any time. Unexcused Absence Policy: 1st time = Meeting with head coach 2nd time = 2-day suspension 3rd time = 1-week suspension 4th time = Suspended from the team All suspensions will be dealt with in a timely and fair manner. The Team Council will help finalize decisions that are in the best interest of the team and studentathlete.

6 Practice Procedures Athletic Department Participation Items: 1. Physical for current school year 2. Parental consent form to participate in extracurricular activiites 3. Activity ticket General Practice Requirements: Be on time and dressed for practice. Start time will be 3:40pm unless told differently. Bring muliple sets of clothes in order to have a workout gear while you are taking home used clothing to be washed. Keep the wrestling room, locker room, and other areas clean. Do not leave any team practice, tournament, or function until dismissed by a coach. Hazing and bullying will not be tolerated. We are a team and will support each other in all aspects. Shower daily and maintain proper hygiene. Challenge Matches: Coaches have final discretion in regards to all varsity, junior varsity, and freshman lineups. Attendance, school conduct and behavior, academic standing, and effort will all play factor into challenge match opportunities. Coaches will place wrestlers in weight classes that give the team the best chance of success. Challenge Match Procedure: Matches will be 6 minutes in length with all high school rules applying to this procedure with the exception of pins. A pin will be worth 5 points and wrestlers will be brought back to their feet after a pin is determined. 3 pins or a tech fall can end a match. Wrestlers can move weight classes to attempt to make the line up. Once a varsity spot has been established, all challenging wrestlers will have to work through the depth chart to determine additional challenges to this varsity wrestler. Initial varsity challengeswill be formatted best 2 out of 3 matches. However, an established varsity wrestler will only need to win 1 match to retain this position. Coaches will either establish the initial depth chart based off past wrestling experiences or through a tournament style competition. Challenge matches will restart after Christmas and varsity wrestle offs will be open again to the 2 out of 3 format.

7 Competition Procedures and Conduct Weigh-in Procedures: Challenge matches: Wrestlers must be within 5 pounds of the weight class they are challenging for. A coach must verify the weight of each wrestler. Home match weigh-ins. All wrestlers must be at least 30 minutes early to all weigh-ins. If there is concern about making your assigned weight class then you need to show up earlier. Away match weigh-ins. Check weight prior to leaving for the competition and notify coaches if there are any concerns about your weight. Upon arrival check competition scale at the host site. Notify coaches of any weight issues as soon as possible. Maintain a proper diet and consult your coaching staff or other areas of expertise for help with proper weight management. Competition conduct: Represent your team in a positive manner in regards to your words, actions, and demeanor at all times.. Sit with and support your team Use good sportsmanship regardless of outcome of your match Wear appropriate clothing. We don t dress to impress, we wrestle to impress. Nobody shall stay in your room other than your teammates on overnight trips. Everyone must travel with the team unless parents have made special arrangements with the coaches prior to the event. All wrestlers will help with tournament and dual setup and teardown. Do not leave until dismissed by a coach. No jewelry will be worn during competition. Leave these items at home. No visible tattoos. Visible tattoos must be covered for competition.

8 Letter Requirements All lettering must meet the final approval of the coaching staff. A wrestler who is injured may letter at the varstiy level if he has sufficient matches or contributions. Varsity Letter Requirements Compete in 50% of the varsity matches Win a medal in the conference or district tournament. All seniors who complete the full season will letter if they have been out at least 2 years. Wrestler must be in good academic and athletic standing to letter. Junior Varsity wrestlers can earn a Varsity letter by accumulating 55 points through the following criteria: 1 point for all wins in JV #1 duals and tournaments. 2 points for all pins in JV #1 duals and tournaments. 5 points for 1st, 3 points for 2nd, 1 point for 3rd at all JV #1 tournaments. 10 points if you attend all practices. 5 points if you miss 2 or less practices. 1 point for each match you compete in on the varsity level 2 points for each match you win while competing on the varsity level. Junior Varsity Letter Requirements Compete in 3 or more tournaments or duals. Be in good academic and athletic standing.
