1 From the Administration Nurse s Station Special Olympics Basketball/Blood Drive Music Guidance News Lunch Calendars Sports Calendar This Institution is an Equal Opportunity Provider We have had an unbelievable fall. As our fall activities wind down, our winter activities will begin. With the start of winter activities also brings the potential of severe weather. Our Safety Committee continues to work on our safety plans, including fire drills, and different lock down procedures. Sometimes these practices are inconvenient. However, in a real emergency, having a practice is very important. Snow Days. In the event we have to call off school or have a late start due to weather, you should receive a call around 6:30 in the morning. The reason the call has to be this early is because we have activities that begin around 7:00. Weather related news will also be on the radio (107.9 the Bull). There are two main factors when I consider calling off school: first is student safety, and second is the amount of time it will take for us to remove the snow from our parking lot. For those students driving in from the country, it is always the parents decision whether or not to permit their child to drive to school. For those high school students who lift weights in the morning, If we are required to move snow from the parking lot, there will be no lifting before school. From an educational stand point, I want to thank all the teachers and parents who have participated in our academic parent nights and parent-teacher conferences. 2 Happy Holidays! Cold Weather Has Arrived- It s that time of year when the temperature starts to drop. Please ensure that your students are coming to school dressed properly with coats, hats, gloves, and long pants. December 2-8 is National Handwashing Awareness Week Handwashing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick. Learn when and how you should wash your hands to stay healthy. 1. Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy- You can help yourself and others stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs: A. BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER PREPARING FOOD B. Before eating food C. Before and after caring for someone who is sick D. Before and after treating a cut or wound E. After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing F. After using the toilet G. After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet H. After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste I. After touching garbage. 2. Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way- Washing your hands is easy, and it s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals. Follow these five steps every time: A. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. B. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. C. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the Happy Birthday song from beginning to end twice. D. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. E. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. 3. Use Hand Sanitizer When You Can t Use Soap and Water Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situation. You can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. Remember these key facts about alcohol-based hand sanitizer: A. Sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in some situations B. Sanitizers do NOT get rid of all types of germs C. Hand sanitizers may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy D. Hand sanitizers might not remove harmful chemicals from hands and heavy metals Be cautious when using hand sanitizers around children. Swallowing alcohol-based hand sanitizers can cause alcohol poisoning if more than a couple mouthfuls are swallowed. Be well, Mrs. Katie Anderson, RN, BSN

3 Special Olympics December News: December has no competitions, but we have started our practices for singles bowling, floor hockey, swimming and basketball. We have our regional bowling Tournament in Omaha on January 26 th for our next competition. Winners of the Big Red Raffle were announced on the 9 th of November. Winning the Husker football tickets: Tara Hemberger of Roseland. Winning the 2 Southwest Airlines tickets: Adam Marsch of Omaha and the 50 flat screen TV went to Glenna Beaty of Holstein. Our team would like to thank everyone again for buying tickets to help support our team. High School Unified Bowling News: West Point-Beemer has had a very successful season so far in unified bowling. The only competition in December is the State bowling meet on December 3 rd. Those participating in High School unified bowling are James Meiergerd, Jose Rodriguez, Brian Rodriguez, Brody Schlickbernd, Henry Robertson, Trevor Francis, Devon Chambliess and Riley Heller.

4 Basketball Elementary girls and boys basketball scrimmages Tuesday, Dec. 11th vs Howells-Dodge 3rd/4th grade girls scrimmage during halftime of JV girls game 4:30 pm. 3rd/4th grade boys scrimmage during halftime of JV boys game 4:30 pm. 5th/6th grade girls scrimmage during halftime of Varsity girls game approximately 6:30 pm. 5th/6th grade boys scrimmage during halftime of the Varsity boys game approximately 7:45 pm. The High School Student Council will be sponsoring a blood drive with Red Cross on December 19th from 8:30 am 2:30 pm. Stayed tuned for further updates!

5 From the Music Department: Our holiday concert are quickly approaching and we are looking forward to sharing our students talents with you! The preschool through sixth grade Christmas Concert is scheduled for Monday, December 3rd, at 7:00 pm in the Elementary Gym. Students from all grades will be singing holiday and winter songs along with performances from the fifth and sixth grade bands. A note will be sent home with more information In the coming weeks. The 7-12th grade Christmas program will be held on Monday, December 17th, at 7:00 pm in the Elementary Gym. You will enjoy an evening of festive music from both our vocal and instrumental programs.
