1 Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Elementary School Principal s Message We are well on our way with our Lenten Journeys. We continue with prayer, fasting and almsgiving as we journey toward Easter. We are so blessed to be able to practice our faith as a school community. We will celebrate Stations of the Cross on Thursday, March 29. We are teaming up with All Saints and are including Confession (Feb 27), Catechism on the Eucharist (Mar 7) and Holy Hour (Mar 8) as part of our Lenten Journey as a community of believers. We wish our gymnastics team great success on Monday, March 5. They have been working hard to create and memorize their routines. We will showcase their talent on Friday, Mar 2, at 1p.m. Please join us. The Jr hockey team will begin practicing soon as their tournament is Thursday, Mar 22. Our teams always make OLI proud. Thank you to all the coaches that give of their time to support our students. Even though the weather seems spring like, it is still only the beginning of March. Please be sure students continue to dress appropriately. Wearing layers will be the best way to cope with the changes in temperature. Please be reminded that March marks March Break and the school will be closed that week. Hope you have a great week with your children. We will miss them and look forward to their return on March 19. Just a reminder, if you are planning holidays during the school year and students will be missing school, please send Mrs. Greve a letter a minimum of 5 days prior to the trip indicating the days in which the students will be absent. 2 Student Parliament Student parliament has planned a spirit wear day for the month of March. Events include: Green day and the student wearing the most green in each division will receive a prize. Wacky hair day, and pajama day will also be this month. Please check your calendar. We hope to see a lot of people participating in these events. Thank-you, Student Parliament.

3 Boys Basketball Congratulations to the boys basketball team on advancing to the semi finals. They played a great game but unfortunately lost a very close game to London Christian Elementary. We are very proud of the boys as they showed so much improvement and development throughout the season! It has been a pleasure to coach such a fantastic group! Girls Basketball The Senior Girls Basketball team s season came to a close on Monday, with a tough loss to St. Theresa in the Quarter- Finals of our playoffs. The girls had a great season and developed immensely throughout the year. Thank you to the girls for all the hard work and their parents for all the support! Go Bears. There will be no classes for our students during the week of March Have a safe, fun and well deserved March Break. March Break Daylight Savings Time Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 2 am is daylight savings time. Don t forget to spring your clocks ahead by one hour! Gymnastics On Monday March 5, the gymnastics team will be participating in the annual educational gymnastics meet at Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre. Good luck to all of our athletes! JR Hockey Our Lady Immaculate Junior Ice Hockey will be participating in a one day tournament on March 22nd, 2018 in London. Each year the LDCSB hosts two Elementary Ice Hockey Tournaments throughout the city of London. The junior Ice Hockey Tournament is a day of fun for the students to work together as a team with their peers even though they may play on different teams and at different levels outside of school. Practices will take place at West Middlesex Area from 4:00-5:00 pm on Thursday March 1st, Thursday, March 8th, and Tuesday, March 20th. Good luck to the team. GO BEARS!

4 Carnaval at O.L.I Our great Carnaval tradition continued at O.L.I this year, and not even the weather stood in it s way. The Carnaval week began on Tuesday with our full day of speaking French, continued with Jersey day and ended off with our tubing trip and Carnaval on Friday and Monday. We even had a surprise visit from Bonhomme himself. Thank you to all the staff and teachers for their hard work throughout the week, O.L.I had a blast!

5 Kids in the Kitchen Looking for some extra help in the kitchen? Try involving your children. Helping out in the kitchen can help kids be healthier eaters. When you ask your children to help, you will get to spend time with them and they will learn about making food, where food comes from, and basic cooking skills. The kitchen is like a classroom in your home. In the kitchen kids can: practice math skills by counting, sorting and measuring ingredients. use their reading skills by following recipes and reading labels. practice their social skills by working together to make a recipe. Tips for success: Food Safety - teach your kids how to wash their hands properly and prepare a recipe safely. Supervise- Be sure to supervise your kids at all times when in the kitchen. Time and patience - your children are learning a new skill and this takes time. Simplify - keep the tasks simple and age appropriate so your children will be successful. 6 Is It Time to Reduce Your Childs Screen Time? Did you know, in 2015, Canadians were given a D- on the particapaction report card for sedentary behaviour? Sedentary behaviour is when you are awake and sitting or lying down, using little energy (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, 2011). Some examples are sitting for long periods of time, getting rides instead of walking or wheeling places, watching television, sitting while playing video games, and spending time on a computer, tablet or cell phone. Canadian screen time guidelines recommend less than 1 hour per day for 2-4 year olds, and less than 2 hours for 5-17 year olds. What can you do as a parent to improve sedentary behaviour in your child s life? Allow them to walk or wheel to school Keep screens (T.V., mobile devices, computers, or video games) out of the bedroom Monitor and limit screen time in your home Keep screens off during meals Be a role model. Limit your screen time in front of your children Get active with your family Improve your children s report card by helping them learn ways to be healthier. Begin by reducing screen time!
