2 Welcome to the Brookwood High School Marching Band family! This handbook contains all of the marching fundamentals that will be covered during band camp and used throughout the season. Each technique has been broken down to expose the underlying mechanics that make-up the entire technique. These explanations will provide a better understanding of each fundamental. Go Panthers!

3 Posture/Basic Attention Position Purpose: Allows for a uniform look across all sections of the band and for correct playing Whistle Command: Twee et tweet tweet tweet tweet One Essential Elements: Feet should be kept together o Weight distribution 2/3 of your weight on the balls of the feet, 1/3 of your weight on the heels of your feet Knees should be straight, but not locked Hips are in line with ankles Lower abdomen/torso in line with hips Shoulders should be rolled back and down in a relaxed position in line with the hips Chin should be 10º above parallel When playing, arms should create a triangle; like a coat hanger o Wrists should not be broken. Wrists should be in-line with the forearm Refer to the last page of the handbook for visual aids of the fundamental Mark Time Purpose: To internalize the pulse by physically reproducing the pulse by movement with the feet Essential Elements: This fundamental will be utilized within ensemble music rehearsals Once counted off, the mark time begins on the up-beat In this case, the mark time would be initiated on the & of count 2. Example: Whistle Command: & Twee et (Mark Time) Band Vocalizes: (Check& 1) Band will receive 3 preparatory beats and initialize the mark time on the & of count 4 Band will vocalize Check & 1 to initiate the mark time The heel should lift ½ inch off the ground, toes should not be lifted off the ground Minimal leg bend should occur, and the upper body should remain still

4 Roll Step Forward Purpose: Allows for the smoothest movement possible for playing while marching set to set. Essential Elements: All maneuvers begin with the left foot o The first step should be initiated by utilizing the ball of the right foot to push off o The band will vocalize Push One to begin the maneuver Downbeats should be felt in the heels, and toes should be up as high as possible o Weight should be centered between both feet on downbeats Upbeats should be felt when ankles cross During the step, the knees should be allowed to bend naturally so that the feet may cross (no toy solider movement) Each foot should stay in its own lane, and never cross paths The heel of the foot should skim the top of the grass (no bicycle step marching) The marcher should roll through the entire foot to the next step (heel, arch, ball, toe) Movement from above the hips should be minimized as much as possible Step sizes may vary due to drill demands, BUT in an 8 to 5 step size the ARCH of the right foot should hit the yard line on count 8. This stays consistent throughout all marching of the moving fundamentals within this handbook At the end of a maneuver, band will vocalize Roll Close ; feet should still be together as they were before starting the maneuver Example: Counts & 1 Band Vocalizes: (Push One) OR (Roll Close)

5 Backwards Step Purpose: Allows for the smoothest movement possible for playing while marching set to set Essential Elements: All maneuvers begin with the left foot o The first step should be initiated by utilizing the ball of the right foot to push off Downbeats should be felt in the balls of the feet o Weight should be centered between both feet on downbeats Upbeats should be felt when ankles cross During the step, the knees should be allowed to bend naturally just enough so that the feet may cross (the step should look fluid, not robotic) Each foot should stay in its own lane, and never cross paths The ball of the foot should skim the top of the grass, heels should never touch the grass Movement from above the hip should be minimized as much as possible At the end of a maneuver, the feet should resume the V position. For example: at the end of an 8 count maneuver, the right foot should land on the yard line on count 7 (the foot should roll down toe-ball-arch-heel into the V position), the left foot should land on the yard line on count 8 (the foot should be placed) to complete the maneuver in the V position Example: Counts Band Vocalizes: (Push One) OR (Roll Close) Dress and Cover Purpose: Common terminology used to describe your placement and alignment in relationship to those around you; helps to maintain intervals and integrity of drill sets Essential Elements: Dress refers to horizontal alignment (side to side). o When dressing a straight horizontal line, you should align your ankles with the ankles of the marchers to the left and right of you o To dress, use peripheral vision to align yourself with the marchers around you Cover refers to vertical alignment (in front) o To properly cover down while in a straight vertical line, the center of your body should be in the center of marchers back in front of you Dressing curve and arc alignment: o To ensure correct alignment in a curved set, marchers should turn into the center of the arc. The entire body should be turned into the arc allowing the heels of the feet to form the outside line of the curve.

6 If the ensemble is given a command to dress the form, the following command sequence will be used. Example: Counts: 1 & Command: Dress Center Dress OR Ready Front Band Vocalizes: (IN OUT) Direction Changes Purpose: Allows for clear and clean changes in direction from set to set Essential Elements: All scenarios are based off an 8 count moves Roll Step Forward to Backwards Step o Counts are marched as normal o Count 8 ARCH of the right foot hits the yard line and rolls all the way through to the toes o Upbeat of 8 use the ball of the right foot to rock back onto the left foots platform to begin backwards marching o Count 1 - ball of the left foot hits and determines direction/step size of the direction o Count 2 ball of the right foot hits and determines tempo Backwards Step to Roll Step Forward o Counts are marched as normal o Count 8 right foot hits the yard line o Upbeat of 8 use the ball of the right foot to push forward onto the left foots platform o Count 1 heel of left foot hits to resume in the forward march o Count 2 heel of the right foot hits to resume in the new direction

7 Slides Purpose: Allows for upper body and sound to stay to the audience while moving side to side Essential Elements: Feet are facing the direction of march while the upper body (hip and up) faces the front Shoulders and instrument should be parallel with the sideline During the slide, the marcher should strive to maintain the same upper body posture as in the regular attention position Twist at the waist rather than the shoulders Reversing Slide Directions Purpose: Allows for change in direction from side to side while body and instrument continue to face front Essential Elements: All scenarios are based off an 8 count moves Sliding Right, Reversing to Left Slide o Count 1-7 sliding as normal o Count 8 heel of the right foot hits, roll through to the ball of the foot. Weight should still be evenly distributed between both feet o Upbeat of 8 use ball of right foot to rock back onto the left foots platform o Count 1 ball of the left foot rearticulates at a 45º to the sideline even with the original track path (feet should form a Y ); hips should face front sideline o Count 2 heel of the right foot rearticulates in the new direction, back in the original track patch; roll through the foot; hip-down should face new direction o Count 3 heel of the left foot rearticulate in the new direction, roll through the foot, both feet are now in the new direction Sliding Left, Reversing to Right Slide o Count 1-7 sliding as normal o Count 8 heel of the right foot hits, roll through to the ball of the foot. Weight should still be evenly distributed between both feet o Upbeat of 8 - use ball of right foot to rock back onto the left foots platform o Count 1 ball of the left foot rearticulates at a 45º to the sideline slightly behind the original track path being taken; hips down should still face original direction o Count 2 ball of the right foot rearticulate at a 45º (feet should form a Y ) o Count 3 heel of the left foot rearticulate in the new direction; hips down should face new direction o Count 4 - heel of the right foot rearticulates in the new direction, back in the original track patch; roll through the foot; both feet are now in the new direction

8 Drag Turns Purpose: Allows for the marcher to change direction of march within one spot Essential Elements: All scenarios are based off of 4 count moves; changing direction by 180º to face the new direction Left Drag Turn o Count 1 left foot moves to be parallel with the sideline (heels should be touching), upper body is at a 45º angle to the front sideline o Count 2 right foot moves to bring feet together, body should be facing the end zone o Count 3 left foot moves to the V shape, upper body is at a 45º angle to the back sideline o Count 4 right foot moves to the V shape, both feet should be together in the V position. Whole body is now facing the new direction Right Drag Turn o Count 1 left foot moves to bring feet together, upper body is at a 45º angle to the front sideline o Count 2 right foot moves to form a wide V shape, body should be facing the end zone o Count 3 left foot moves to bring feet together, upper body is at a 45º angle to the back sideline o Count 4 right foot moves to complete the V shape. Whole body is now facing the new direction

9 Back End Zone Line Key Field Markings Yard lines Back Sideline Painted Numbers Back Hashes Front Hashes Painted Numbers Front Sideline In between the yard lines (on the front sideline, back sideline, and in between both sets of hash marks) are running tic marks.

10 How to Read Drill Charts Yard lines are light gray vertical lines. Dark baby blue vertical lines indicate the halfway point between the yard lines. In between each yard line are 8 small light baby blue boxes. Each box = one 8to5 step One of these boxes = four 8to5steps
