1 The Franklin Gazette Welcome to the Franklin Gazette October 2015 Dear Franklin Academy students, families and staff, This school year Miss Tornopsky and her newspaper club are proud to present to you The Franklin Gazette. This paper promises to bring you the latest in Franklin events, sports, and news. This is a monthly newspaper and it will display information for the coming month. In this issue the paper welcomes Elisa L., Erica P., Josh H., Mikayla A., and Natalie O. to the staff. We will have many different articles each month such as, recommended books, video games, and the upcoming month's calendar of events. We will also include a monthly teacher and/or student spotlight, which will consist of an interview explaining the reason they were chosen and some interesting facts about them. There will be other rotating articles throughout the year as well. We hope you have a great school year, and happy reading! Flashback to the 80's By: Mikayla A. On September 11, we had our first school dance and took a flashback to the 80's. When the students first arrived they went to the cafeteria for pizza and some 80's themed snacks such as cosmic brownies. About half an hour later we went to the gymnasium to have a groovy time. There was a lot of cool music such as 5 th Harmony, One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer, The Weekend, Pentatonix, etc. The students got a chance to take lots of pictures at the photo booth and had a great time dancing. A portion of the proceeds went to support the families of the victims of 9/11. A quick shout out to Ms. Wroble for putting the dance together and making it a wonderful night to remember.

2 New in Technology By: Josh H. This month, I have chosen to highlight video games. From now until December, video game releases will be something to look out for. These are the games that made it into this issue s spotlight. -Super Mario Maker (Wii U): In Super Mario Maker, you can create your own levels to challenge your friends! This game is a Wii U exclusive and the game pad makes it easy to create levels at any age. This game can make you feel like you are sketching ideas into a notebook. -Madden 16 (PlayStation and Xbox Consoles): Madden 16 is the newest released football game. In the Madden 16, they have made a new catching platform and they have added new additions to the franchise mode. The creators have also come out with a new game mode known as Draft Champions, in which you draft players to help you get wins online or against the computer. -The Uncharted Collection (PS4): The Uncharted Saga is now being added to the PS4. Most fans have been eagerly awaiting its arrival. This collection includes all three games and the graphics have been modified to cope with the new graphics system of the PS4. Keep an eye out for next month when I will be highlighting news from the technological world:. Pop Culture News! By Elisa L. These past months, there have been many new events within the pop culture community. One of those events was the Video Music Awards. The VMA s took place on August 30 th. Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift kicked off the night with a killer performance of Nicki's The Night is Still Young and Taylor's Bad Blood. Taylor also took home the award for Best Female Video, and Video Of The Year for that same song. Mark Ronson took home the award for Best Male Video for his hit song Uptown Funk feat. Bruno Mars, and Kanye West took home the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. Can we talk about Kanye for President 2020?! You go Kanye! If you are looking for some music news, I got you covered! 3 I hope you tuned in for the season premiere of Dancing With the Stars: Season 21! It was sure worth the watch! With stars like Hayes Grier and Andy Grammar, how could you not watch? Tamar Braxton and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy set the dance floor on fire earning the highest score of the night, 21! Look out for next month s article of Pop Culture News! Recommended Reads By: Erica P. Growing up a self-proclaimed book nerd, I always read just about anything. I would read small chapter books series, like A to Z Mysteries, or even voluminous books, like all seven Harry Potter books. My parents told me that when I first learned how to read, I couldn't stop. Literally! Although reading may be boring sometimes (cough, history books, cough) there are a lot of fiction books out there that are perfect for different age groups. One of the books I read when I was younger was The Monster Who Ate My Peas, written by my father's cousin, Danny Schnitzlein and illustrated by Matt Faulkner. It's about a young boy who hates eating peas. So, in order to avoid eating peas, he makes a deal with a monster. The deal is simple. One soccer ball in exchange for the peas. However, each time the boy is given peas, the monster makes the price higher. Now, the boy must choose between giving up his favorite thing in the whole world or eating the disgusting peas. This book is perfect for grades K-3. For 4 th and 5 th grade, I would recommend reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. It takes you through Greg Heffly's first year at middle school. It includes an older brother, a younger brother, crazy parents, and his best friend. Just don't expect your middle school years to be like his. Now, for middle school readers, I would 100% recommend The Maze Runner by James Dashner. It's a story about a boy named Thomas, who wakes up in a strange place having no memory of who he is. The only thing he can remember is his name. It is the same for all the other boys, who help him fit into their group. He is given the job of a Runner, tasked with trying to find a way out of the Maze, which surrounds their home called the Glade. Soon after Thomas arrives, the first girl comes. Her name is Teresa. She and Thomas soon find the way out along with their new friends. This story is one of my favorites, having many twists and turns, humor, and tons of secrets. These books have been my favorite books growing up. The Monster Who Ate My Peas is something that I can still relate to today. I hope that you will read them, even if it is just a couple of chapters or all of them. If you are interested in buying any of these books, they can all be found at your local Barnes and Noble. 4 Teacher Spotlight This month The Franklin Gazette is highlighting our fabulous middle school chess teacher, Mr. Abrahams! Mr. Abrahams started playing chess in 8 th grade, when he saw his friends playing at lunch. He decided to concentrate more on chess, and was soon winning local tournaments in North Carolina. He went to a high school in New Hampshire called the New Hamptons Prep School. There he continued playing chess, along with tennis and football. In high school, Mr. Abrahams won the New Hampshire high school championship. He also won the New England class A football championship. After he graduated, he went to Boston University for one year. He played competitive chess tournaments around the country with his college team. Then he went back to North Carolina to teach chess full time to individual students. He taught about 20 kids, including the current national kindergarten champion. He also taught small school groups on the side. He went on to Maine to finish college. While he was getting his college degree, he taught two high school groups, John Bapts High and Ornell High. He graduated with a degree in marketing, but decided to focus on chess. He got a job with Silver Knights chess, to teach in Washington D.C. There he taught about 1,500 kids per week from D.C. and the surrounding area. He also ran his own chess tournaments. He decided to get his teaching certification and stay at one specific school. After his sister moved down to Tampa, he found an opening here at Franklin Academy. He taught elementary chess for one year and has been working with middle school students for the past two. His words of advice to anyone who wants to be a chess expert are to keep playing, practicing, and working hard. ' The more you play, the better you get. What's Your Horoscope? By: Elisa L. If you are a Libra (born September 23- October 22) or Scorpio (born October 23- November 21), this is your month! Sometimes your life doesn't seem to change, even with tons going on. You are being trusted with lots of jobs and tasks. You are most likely losing your mind with so much going on, without even realizing it! Not only this month, but this year will bring you some amazing surprises. You might be rewarded for your great character, make some new friends, or brighten someone s day with your infectious personality! You should be proud to be a Libra or Scorpio! You are definitely loved by many.
