Angela McWilliams Scrip Coordinator amcwilliams.scrip@gmail.com Athletic News Week of September 21 st Volleyball The 5th grade girls have shown big improvements with serving and defense. Our first match this past weekend was against a very strong St. Rose team. We lost the first game rather quickly 7-25 due to some powerful St. Rose servers, but made the needed adjustments for the next game, and with improved defense just barely lost the second game Our second match against St. John's Healdsburg highlighted many of our improving players as well as our stronger players. Our first game was close, with the lead changing several times but St. John's prevailed We played a very strong second game and held the lead for most of the game, winning For the third game, St. John's started strong and we could not quite overtake them. We held on at game point with a run of 4 straight points before falling
5 5 Shamrock Newsletter The girls have jelled as a team and are playing well together, encouraging each other through out the games and practices. They have a great work ethic and have exhibited great sportsmanship. We are confident our first win is not too far off. The 6th grade girls played one game this past weekend coming on strong at the end, but dropping the match to Trinity. Game captain Matilda Bourke played strong supported by Gretchen Wahle on the court. Megan O'Malley's hard work continues to pay off, bringing more great serves to the game! The 7th grade Shamrocks had two great matches last weekend. Facing off against our first opponent St. John's Healdsburg, the players started out a little slow and lost. However, we came back fighting hard against our second opponent St. Mary's and employed a combination of hard hitting serves by Julia Bodor and even stronger defense by every player, especially from Sarah Pyrce, Rose Mooney, Alexandra Ibrahim, and Clare Halsey who helped lead St. A's to victory and finally 25-23, a real nail biter!! We are so proud of our team and look forward to more victories as the season continues. The 8 th grade girls had an easy win over St. Eugene's. Stand out performances came from Maddie Klungel with four ace serves in a row and Mary Foust who managed a total of 8 consecutive points in match two. Their second game was tough against their rival St. Francis. Katie Mason started off strong with 8 consecutive points and along with great play from the rest of the team, they won the first match. The second match was tough Eliza Mason did a great job with 4 important digs but it wasn't enough and the girls lost 26 to 24. It came down to the 3rd game with again great serving from Maddie Klungel. Both Karlie Wells and Breck Hearn also played well but it was not enough as the girls lost 16 to 14. Our Middle School Boys team had a great weekend of volleyball! They played a scrimmage vs. Saint John Lutheran on Friday, and then a Tournament on Saturday. They tested the 8 th grade competition to three games every time, winning the second game of the match with strong court play and team work. Aidan Magee and Lucas Brandon were front row standouts, while Miles Martin and Ryan Mooney excelled in setting. Jared Gardner anchored the team with solid passing as did Anthony Notaro with return of serve. Jack Foust served very well, while Carson Bacci and Seth Morrison had service runs for points and great saves. Congrats to the whole team! Basketball Registration has been extended! Basketball registration is happening now for all interested 5 th 8 th grade students. 7 th and 8 th grade students can continue to register until Monday, September 28 th. Forms can be found in the office. This is an exciting sport to play at St. A s and we would love your participation!
