1 THE STAR MAKERS SPOTLIGHT STUDIO NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 Newsletter WE ARE OFF TO AN AMAZING START OF THE DANCE SEASON! GETTING READY FOR OUR BUSY SEASON! Believe it or not, the holiday season is upon us! Right before our eyes, those beautiful fall colors will be transformed into Winter Whites, fall cardigan sweaters will be exchanged for bubble coats and sky boots, and Star Makers Academy of Dance will officially enter its Busy Season! At Star Makers Academy of Dance the months of December- June is a super busy time for us. In December, we will get ready for our first performance of the year, our amazing WINTER SHOWCASE, made even busier this year as we start a new tradition of a BABY SHOWCASE for our dancers ages 2.5-4! As fall sports end, we typically get a large influx of new students during the months January and February, and we begin to get ready for our ANNUAL SPRING RECITAL. This is also the time of year that TEAM STAR MAKERS, our nationally award winning competitive dance team, gears up the start of the competition season! That CREW from team Star Makers has been working around the clock learning this year s amazing choreography and it is safe to say that we are gearing up for the start of another NATIONALLY AWARD WINNING SEASON! We have so many exciting things in store for our students as we continue on our mission to make Star Makers Academy of Dance the ultimate place for dancers to learn and grow in Maryland! If there is anything we can do to further enhance your dancer s experience please let us know! At Star Makers we are committed to excellence and the growth and success of our students! IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE FRONT DESK ON OCTOBER 8, 2016 TEAM STAR MAKERS DANCERS VANILLA, OLIVIA, AND LAILA HAD AN AMAZING DAY OF CLASSES AT BROADWAY DANCE CENTER IN NYC! THEY SPENT THE DAY TAKING CLASSES IN BALLET AND JAZZ DANCING ALONG SIDE MANY DANCERS WHO PERFORM ON BROADWAY! Please be reminded that tuition is due between the 1 st and the 5 th of each month. November tuition is due on Tuesday, Novmeber 1 st between Saturday, November 5 th. Late fee of $20.00 will be assessed on all accounts with outstanding tuition on Monday, November 7 th. 2 STAR MAKERS SPOTLIGHT PAGE 2 UPCOMING NOVEMBER/DECEMBER EVENTS On Sunday, November 6, 2016 and Sunday December 4, 2016 Star Makers will host an ACRO/TUMBLING Workshop with Mr. Deonte! On both dates workshops for dancers ages 11 and under will be held from 1pm-2pm and for dancers ages 12 and over from 2pm-3pm. The cost will be $20.00 per student. Please register at the front desk if you are interested in attending. Did you know that Star Makers Academy of Dance is the only dance studio in PG County to be an official chapter of the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY OF DANCE ARTS? On Thursday November 10, 2016 at 7pm Star Makers will hold a student and parent interest meeting for families interested seeking induction into the National Honor Society of Dance Arts. This meeting is open to all Star Makers families with dancers in grades Please register at the front desk if you are interested in attending this informative meeting. Star Makers will be OPEN for classes ON VETERANS DAY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2016 OUR STARS ARE SHINING IN THE COMMUNITY! ON OCTOBER 13 TH, TEAM STAR MAKERS DANCERS KAYLA, LAURYN, BREA, GIANNI, AND SYDNEY PARTICIPATED IN THE ANNE ARUNDLE MEDICAL CENTER SENIOR SHOWER AND DELIVERED GIFT BASKETS TO ELDERLY PATIENTS AT THE HOSPITAL. A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THE ENTIRE STUDIO WHO SELFLESSLY DONATED ITEMS FOR THIS BE SURE YOUR DANCER IS KEEPING REGULAR CLASS ATTENDANCE! In order for our dancers to continue to make the tremendous growth and progress they have been working towards during these first few months of classes, it is important that our students maintain regular attendance in all of their classes. In addition as we prepare for our Winter and Spring performances, dancers must keep regular attendance in order to learn the choreography and technique needed for a stellar performance on stage. Dancers who miss classes are encouraged to take make up classes and sign up for private lessons in order to ensure that they do not fall behind. Dancers who are frequently absent may not be eligible to participate in the Winter and Spring Showcases! Star Makers Academy of Dance will be on Thanksgiving Break from Wednesday November 23- Saturday November 26, Classes will resume on Monday November 28, 2016 Our second OPEN HOUSE WEEK will be held the week of November 28 th -December 3, During Open House Week parents are invited sit in and observe classes! We also invite our dancers to BRING A FRIEND TO DANCE CLASS during Open House Week! SAVE THE DATE The Star Makers Community Service Committee will be conducting several community service activities during the months of November and December to include a can food drive, our annual Thanksgiving nursing home visit, a December coat drive, and a holiday Adopt a Military family! Be on the lookout for details and dates. Star Makers will be on WINTER BREAK FROM Thursday December 22, Monday, January 2, Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 3, PLEASE CHECK THE LOST AND FOUND! Our lost and found is once again overflowing with belongings! There are a ton of shoes and garment items. Please take some time to look through the lost and found and make sure your dancer does not have any items in the bin. 3 STAR MAKERS SPOTLIGHT PAGE 3 STAR MAKERS TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: MS.ZARI PRE BALLET, HIPHOP, JAZZ, CONTEMPORARY INSTRUCTOR Ms. Zari Davis is a proud Prince George s County native who began her dance training in the Washington DC metro area at the age of five. Zari is trained in the areas of hip hop, jazz, ballet, contemporary and modern dance. With many years of competitive and performance experience, Zari has danced on many stages including BET s 106 & Park, the Lincoln Theater in D.C., and the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. As a student at Bishop McNamara high school she was captain of the school s nationally award winning dance team. During that time she also became a part of Capitol Movement Inc. pre-professional company and later she began dancing with their adult professional company where she still dances today. Upon graduation, she went on to Temple University where she majored in dance and business finance. While at Temple she also danced on the Diamond Gems dance team. Over the years, Zari has continued to dance professionally. Zari has been a member of several dance companies including Dance Institute of Washington s adult company, Reflections, under the late Fabian Barnes. If you look down, you are going to go down! Keep your eyes up! -Ms. Zari Zari has been teaching in the DC area for the past five years. Zari joined the staff of Star Makers Academy of Dance in the Spring of 2016 where she teaches pre ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, and jazz. Zari also serves as the lead counselor for the Star Makers Summer Dance camp and choreographs for the competitive team. Her students absolutely love her classes as she pushes her dancers to reach their fullest potential in all that they do. While she has a long list of accolades and achievements, Zari greatest accomplishment by far is that she is a mother of a beautiful four year old daughter named Dylan-Heart! STAR MAKERS BOOSTER CLUB NEWS WHAT IS THE STAR MAKERS BOOSTER CLUB? Now in its third season, the Star Makers Booster Club is an organization of parents who help to support the studio in our various initiatives and events for the students. Dance Quote of the Month I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself. Mikhail Baryshnikov Although there is a general body of parent officers who, with the support and guidance of Star Makers Director Ms. Stephanie, serve as the general leadership team of the club, the Booster club is broken up into committees which allows for parents to serve in a variety of capacities. Some of the committees include a fundraising committee, which helps to organize fundraisers for the competitive team, the Event committee, which produces fun activities for our studio families, and our community service committee, which organizes activities to ensure that Star Makers continues to give back to the community through special service activities and events. Star Makers is extremely grateful to the many parents who serve as Booster club leadership and those who help to serve on the variety of committees! Their Black Cat Trunk Set up Was AWESOME! Loving these awesome costumes and these awesome dancers! Cayla, Vanilla, and Olivia look like they really got into the spirit of the trunk or treat festivities!
